Who can't wait for the Novakid to be added :)

Curious as to what their ship would look like. Looking at Nova at the moment to change, if its as good as I think it is.

 

How about no. The game already has way too many references to count, it's almost like 2D Borderlands 2 (although this isn't too fair, because Terraria was dubbed 2D Minecraft, but the similarities are astonishing). I don't know about anyone else, but I bought Starbound because it looked like an original game with exciting features that didn't need to rely on cheap jabs at pop culture. I want Starbound to be a game that I can play 4 years from now and not cringe at, knowing those clever references to the latest "Meme" embedded in it's very code.

A lot of the more memorable video games if you've noticed have little to no references to outside content.

 

I can wait.

You do realize there is quite a bit of pop culture references in the game already right? Some are blatantly obvious.. Others are more subtle.. Some of them are a little too subtle..

 

I think if the references are clever, well hidden, or really funny, they are just about the greatest thing ever. I'm lookin' at you, Fallout!

However, when it's just "HEY LOOKIT ME AH LIEK DR.WHO!!" there are few things that are a bigger "turnoff" while playing a game.

 

I strangely don't really care.
It is cool, yes, but I am more excited for all the OTHER stuff, specially quests and gameplay change.

I can certainly wait, especially given how at the moment all the default races play nearly the same even if there are not many games you can play as a plasma space cowboy. I feel like much of the hype for them now is because we don’t officially have them yet. Once they are added, I suspect the hype will die down really quickly and not even be there at all for people who first started playing the game after they were added.

With so many suggested races with a lot of support, I can see how it would clearly be a mess to handle that many of them especially due to the assets involved. Anyone that even has a much as begin designing armor sets for their custom races probably understands the hard work involved, yet alone other content like custom villages and the custom blocks and objects for them.

 

IMO the anticipation is greater than the catch.

 

I want to know, what has made the novakids so popular ? i saw the video, and the stuff they have as a mod, i think its pretty nice although i cant get used to their looks the train thing and respawn are gorgeous but... is that really all there is? or was it something else that i missed?

 

People want what they can't have. As of now, we can't have canon Novakids, therefore increasing our desire to play as them tenfold.
For the record I really want the Novakids.

 

Aside from not officially having them yet, I think their appearance and lore might also be the main factors. Cowboys are generally considered cool and being a space cowboy that’s made out of plasma probably helps to amp that factor up. From what I understand, energy beings are rare in sci-fi, much less playable ones. Also from what I know about their lore, they are very forgetful, which people find amusing.

 

they sound like a likeable bunch! i think its pretty sweet they re gonna be official, but also would be even more awesome if other also popurlar species are added... like the avali and aforementioned, the universe is too big for just 9 playable species...

 

maybe avali and popular race as NPC like agaran and the rainbow alien

 

that would be nice but... i think those with a strong standpoint, or origin in terms of lore should be considered for official release/post-release add ons, while the sillier or for fun races should stay as mods, dont get me wrong, some funny races out there are so great, i am lost in the quality and effort people put into these... like the Familiar race... they re so loveable

 

I wonder if it hasn’t already been discussed, if I should make a new thread attempting to figure out why the Avali are so popular. I like to overanalyze things.

Despite how well done many of the custom races are done so far, I can’t see them being added into the game quite the same way as certain features through like the back lantern. I think this mostly has to do with the planned lore so far and the interactions between different races. Even counting custom races that are not based on or directly from another IP and would fit in (basically ruling out magic based races), there would be quite a bit that could be added. They would also have to conform to a humanoid body shape for the sake of all existing clothes being able to fit them. There is also the deal of making new races fit in and not simply being in a vacuum with no relationships to any other playable race.

With that said, the Novakids will be an exception to this. The Novakids were a stretch goal after more money was raised beyond the original Kickstarter goal and no public beta was out for the community to mod in races yet. However they got decided over many other suggested races I’m not sure about, but I’m sure it wasn’t an easy decision.

 

im sure it wasnt... imo what makes the avali so special is the incredibly well explained lore, their existance and (also imo) how naturally easy they blend in with other races, althought they have an original digitigrated body sprite or if you preffer, body shape i think it shouldnt be a limitant, true tho, it limits the number of pieces they can use. there are a couple mod races out there i could totally see as a natural part of the game, mostly because of the nature of their lores and the number of finished features these have.
