whats all this about a mod being taken down due to harassment?

sorry if i'm butting in while missing something significant to the discussion; the most i recall is someone taking down a certain mod because "too much drama, guys" more or less, a few days ago. we've had other mods but have they been taken down by the authors because they were victims of harassment? i feel a bit lost.
either way in this particular case i'm thinking of it wasn't even a 'majority rules' thing like has been suggested; the one i remember being taken down by the author actually involved more people defending the mods existence, then attacking it. their posts and likes generally appeared to make up substantially more of the thread(which surprised the hell out of me, let me say). so by any type of 'majority rules' or 'the community shows' logic, it should have stayed.

it was their opinion to take it down though, and after seeing what the thread turned into i can understand why. i played a part in the crapfest but i can understand how the author probably just wanted to post their mod, not wake up to an 8+ page thread of racial debate. they made something the liked, uploaded it for other people to enjoy, then got a face full of argument both supporting and going against them. ouch.

either way i agree with Qtw when he says

it just feels extremely rude to go into a content creators thread, when the content they've uploaded is fully within community rules and guidelines, and start insinuating they're not progressive, moral, correct or decent.
if someone strictly spouts racist rhetoric or derogatory terms i don't begrudge people going after them - knowing full well it's hypocritical of me when i say i support free speech as free speech - but why does someone posting a mod that changes the color of pixels emit such hate?
the original games representation of races doesn't change any. just the modders game, and those who use it.

to be honest, any mod that changes the race of any character (aside from the player character in most cases) is a sign of an odd fetish and/or prejudice towards certain races.

i find it all pretty equally disturbing.

Is this real? Is no one even offended by this? As someone else said. If you don't want to date a black person don't date Maru. That is not offensive. To actually change her skin color then decide she's now suitable to date. That's what's offensive.

ah. if it is the mod i'm thinking of, the topic was still viewable last i checked. possibly had the most views in the mod forum actually, next to the rules thread(also surprising!)
i'd recommend checking it yourself. it may turn out i'm biased or blind, and the percentages are the other way around, but i'd really suggest any time you hear "harassment" you look into it yourself. that's one word people throw around like candy these days, whether it applies or not. it's almost a giant flag to whip out your notepad and magnifying glass and get to work, rather than take it at face value and repeat it. in my experience, at any rate. i absolutely hate that lately i have to take the term as an equivalent to crying wolf.

other players? but they don't have to use it, or know who uses it.

but she's a game character - one you can make into a lizardman as well should you so choose.
in your own games, not others anyway. she's still release-maru in other players game unless they themselves opt to change her.
if this helps people like the characters more, or interact with them more, why is it offensive when people do it in their own game experience?

the nature of modding doesn't cheapen an experience; it enriches it for the individual.
some people will get more enjoyment out of the changes, other's won't but they won't have to change either. this gives everyone their cake.
some people might not experience maru's story without changing her. do i find it silly that her skin color is the thing that will push her into "experience" territory? sure. is it wrong? no, it's their game and their reasons. is it nice knowing they actually experience marus story, albiet with a different sprite? i think so personally, yeah.

I find it strange because Maru kind of looks latino because her skin is only slightly tan in color when compared to her father and mother. She also shares more Euro features than her African father. I think her African Lineage helps a lot at supporting that opinion as well, as former Spanish, French and Portuguese colonies had large African slave populations which have since integrated and mixed with the local populations as well as large European Migrations to boot. So in a lot of respects the fact she is European/African mixed fits perfectly well in either North America and Latin America.
