I don't think anything is wrong with wanting an all white town for those who live in all white towns and want their personal game to reflect that. Humans are inherently tribal. What the OP is trying to say is that people who ask for white character remakes are often judged harshly and called racist for simply wanting/asking for the mod and Teh OP (he/she/xir/xmadam/xhem/xhey) want them to be able to ask for it without being labeled as a bigot. example: "Why do you want to make them white when all the others are white that you could chose from. you must be racist." Its the same as me asking for all the characters to be change to male and being called/ suggested that I'm sexist. People shouldn't have to be afraid to ask for white characters any more than I should for wanting my farmer to resemble Sam Worthington as close as possible. lol. Ive been told by real life friends that I hate myself because I am attracted to Sam Worthington and Henry Cavill. It hurts that something so simple gets blown way out of proportion. I almost want to go to the U.N. and complain that people disagree with me on this! lolol.

As far as the hatred of whites, I used to be quite a rabid Social Justice nutjob. I had been convinced by professors and peers that all whites were racist even if they didn't know it, all heterosexuals were homophobic. Then I entered the real world and made friends and found these to be lies. The reason I left that crowd alone? Male sexuality was becoming more and more demonized, especially heterosexual white male sexuality in the 90's and its worse today. A close friend of mine literally went nuts and suggested that straight males should be taught to be attracted to overweight women, that gay males are sexist for not wanting to date women, that straight males are homophobic for not wanting to date trans-persons. This is from the same person I grew up with that would argue against religious people, telling them that gays can not choose what their attracted to. So straight men can? I don't like this planet anymore. Am I sexist for only feeling attracted to masculine men? Why don't we all just gouge out our eyes and rip out our hearts and just become libido-less colorless gender-less blobs of meat. Not a world I want to live in.

Maybe we should all keep quiet and not speak about these issues but that will only breed more animosity and hatred.

I love and respect you all, even if i disagree with you, you have a right to speak. Please have fun with this awesome game and mold it how you see fit. My goal is to learn to make sprites and mods myself so I can turn something awesome into something awesomely tailored to my play style and personality. Maybe we can all try and help one another. Lets not let politics, blame and anger separate us any more than the human family already is. Gamers are the only crowd where I have seen true diversity and some of my longest lasting friendships began in places like this.

 

After a re-read, yes, probably. Regardless, MY point was not "majority always wins" but "we the people" decide what we want in a place or time. I don't think censoring a minority's opinion is the way to go about it (through harassment, no less) but it does demonstrate that it's a sentiment that's not generally welcome, which, my explanations of diversity aside, was my whole point from the beginning, that the thread just seems inflammatory, poking at something that people already showed they didn't want here.

There is zero difference between "majority always wins" and "we the people". That's the whole point of democracy... Sigh. The majority of people are retarded. Slavery and Nazi Germany has already proved this. And as long as a mod harms no one- it should be allowed without facing harassment. Being in the minority or having an unpopular opinion is NOT a bad thing. You should read a history book sometime.

TBH I think if no one got upset about the original mod, as it technically is just a person's personal taste it literally isn't destroying anyone's culture because a couple of pixels were changed [and you definitely don't have to download it], it wouldn't have turned into this, and the mod would have been quickly swept away by the other mods that people are making.

I wouldn't have downloaded it as I see no need to, just like how I wouldn't have downloaded a mod that makes some random character Native American, despite being Native American, because I literally don't care what race they are. I don't care if someone makes a random person Native American, if they want it, sure! Go for it! There are mods that are making women nude. Do I care? Not really, even if I find it distasteful. Heck, artistically the nude modes are useful if you get permission to use them as a base for your own skinning/clothing mods, so they still can help for something.

If the original mod was being made hostilely, or to promote what is currently happening right now, well, I guess it worked, but I don't know if it was. Even if it doesn't get put up here, it will be put up somewhere else if people really want it. In the end what is happening now is a bunch of people trying to get the last word in, trying to be right, and trying to justify how uncomfortable or upset they are.

I'm not saying people aren't offended by the mod existing, and I'm not saying people don't have a right to be. But I'm also not saying people shouldn't have the right to upload a mod, especially when it isn't against the terms of service. In the end you don't have to download it, and negative attention is still attention. I think a lot of people are getting defensive now over something like this, and it is actually sort of sad to see, because there was no reason for it. Every type of mod is going to exist for this game eventually, and it doesn't make it right, but they will. Will it be considered "white washing" if someone makes a mod that replaces all of the characters with characters from another series, and that character happens to be asian or white that replaces Demetrius or Maru? Where is the line drawn between what is racist and what isn't? Will I be considered someone who is supporting "white washing" if I downloaded a mod that, I don't know, replaces all of the characters and suddenly Demetrius is The Doctor or something random [the example came off the top of my head]. Or is it because it is a completely different character that it is ok?

I never expected to see this sort of anger and hatred in a game I've waited years for, especially not in the modding community.

This is kind of irrelevant to the discussion at hand, but on a private forum run by a private corporation, they're free to censor/silence/delete whatever they want, as stipulated in those "I Agree" things no one ever reads. (had this copied for a while, hadn't posted it yet)

 

Well we don't know what the people want do we? since the people are singel individuals, so we can't speak for everyone only ourself. Personally I don't care what colour they are or if they have cat ears.

But I do feel bad for people that feel hurt that they can't have game charcter they like look the way they want, and I feel bad for those that get hurt that some want to "fix" the looks on some charcters. I would'nt mind a stickfigur portrait either just to get personality choice.

 

Nothing has to come of it at all. There are hundreds of games with hundreds of mods that could be put on the same shelf as the one proposed in the original post and there haven't been any upheavals over them. It's as simple as:

I don't need gay biracial characters in a game to represent me. I can represent myself just fine and base my self image and worth on my strengths and hell, even my failings help shape me into the sexy bastard I am today lol. I have learned over 33 years to love myself for me. There have been plenty of awesome female characters in games and I am an 80's kid and I have been gaming almost from the start. I used to be sore that most black males were depicted as thugs or unintelligent, then I decided to not be 'represented' by such person. I wonder if our ancient ancestors had such concerns. Why do people think make believe characters represent them anyway? How you are represented is your job no one elses. I have never played supermariobros and felt like I was left out or I should be held to the same physical standards as Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. I have never felt like "I should look like that or people will hate me." Fuck what people think. Be you. You only get one chance at life and I'm halfway done with mine, I refuse to spend my remaining time wishing I was like this person or that person. I can only be me and that is good enough.

 

I mean, I'm free to not move on. You can't complain about censoring then keep trying to get me to leave. As per the OP's request, I've been civil (to be honest, I would be civil regardless). Just wanted to drop my 2c and also explain why some people feel about the topic the way they do.

 

Can't we all agree that it was wrong for people to attack the maker of those "make x character white" mods and move on?
