Where are the Ancient Gates for the final frontier?

Consider me flummoxed.

I haven't played since the 1.0 release and am doing a playthrough on a fresh install. I've defeated the ruin and had the mysterious guy turn up at the outpost to trade me a key for an ancient vault. The Quest tracker now tells me to enter a lone ancient gateway.

But I can't seem to find one anywhere. I tried one of the gates on the surface of a lush planet, just in case that was it, but it just took me to the outpost.

I remember the ancient gateways being everywhere when i played last, I have now spent ages hopping from star to star looking for one and not seen one yet and realised that I haven't yet seen one so far in this playthough.

Are they in specific systems? Are they just really rare random spawns now? What am i missing here?

 

They still orbit stars. They're just fairly uncommon now.

 

Update, I found one eventually. they are definitely much more uncommon. Thanks for the reply
