Where are all the guns?

In an earlier beta (about a year ago) I was inundated with guns, loads of them. Not so now in 1.0. The crappy sword thing at the start of the game is pretty much useless and I prefer guns anyway, but where the heck are they all?

I was lucky to find ONE gun near the start, I can't remember where, but it's about as useful as punching myself in the face. At least it kills things from a distance though... after two whole minutes.

Now that I've completed the ore quests for the tech guy at the Outpost my only other mission is to go to the Erchius Mining Facility.

If I recall correctly the mining facility is a ball ache (especially that damn boss fight) and a scene of much lost pixels. If it's anything like it was in the beta then this crappy peashooter gun I've got isn't going to cut it and since I'm stuck on the starting planet and with no guns for sale at the Outpost I'm kind of f'ked.

    So where are the guns?

Give hunting spears a try :)

It's not uncommon to find assault rifles and shotguns or even the occasional sniper rifle in the mining facility's bins and lockers, though and with iron armor and hunting spears you will be able to one-shot the zoidbergs (the nakey ones, anyways).

Or you can choose the novakid as your race. They craft guns instead of melee weapons. So far I've only had to make one as though I do generally prefer the melee weapons except for that sweet sweet rocket launcher.

well shotguns and handguns seem to be very bad. I do nearly all my stuff either with rocket launchers or staffs or grenade throwers.

pistols, assault rifles and shotgusn seem to be way too energy inefficient to kill stuff properly.

I found the shotgun to be quite excellent, the raw knockback lets you keep a safe distance whilst pounding the mobs down with focused and spread shot.

The best gun in the game that I have found is a Crossbow called "Adaptable Crossbow" which can be purchased from the Treasured Trophies shop.

If you can figure it out, you can spawn yourself a merchant in your own town and buy a gun off him. My town's got a merchant and he sold me a pretty sweet Rocket Launcher with a Burst Fire special attack which did pitiful damage per rocket but was great at carpet-bombing enemies when I jumped over them. Also helps that self-damage from the launchers isn't a thing, ha ha. (I still can't figure out how I got him. His room consists of a workbench, an apex computer table with the 9 spaces for inventory, a computer monitor, a metal chair I acquired from the first planet's mining shaft, and some oil lanterns. :v )

Yes, OP, try the OP-yet-still-nerfed hunting spear

Okay, I managed to do the Erchius Mining Facility with just the crappy pistol but it took like half an hour (my gun only takes between 1 and 3 health off those pink things). The more advanced pink things wearing armour were tedious in the extreme. The boss fight was simple enough since you don't really need to use weapons if you can avoid the pink things. I'm pretty sure Chucklefish made this first quest easier than one of the earlier beta (pre-combat update).

Now that I'm looking through Floran ruins I've found some better weapons, including a grenade launcher.

But I still miss all the guns I had before, especially my favourite one which was pretty badass.

Honestly, I think it just comes down to play style, I told the quests to screw off initially, and just explored for hours. Basic chests, dungeons, etc, has me with more guns/weapons than I could possibly use. Made the quests a little too easy, sadly.

Since loot is randomly generated, its all down to luck in the end. There are plenty of guns in the game, you are just having a bit of bad luck.

Anyway, if you want a somewhat decent midgame sniper rifle i advice you to do the two quests given by Nuru. (Il not go into any details on who Nuru is or what the quests contain to avoid spoilers). Do note that the last quest is locked until you have progressed enough.

Did this myself, and was lucky enough to find blue weaponry and a redshirt for dreadwing.

If you don't want to use spears, you can always use throwing knives/darts/whatever! I found a TON of those on my starter planet.

Or, just use the Iron Broadsword on the Lunar Mission. It only takes 1 full combo + 1 swing to kill the Moontants.

    Step 1: Run in.
    Step 2: Full-Combo (the 3 hit attack)
Step 3: Dash backwards so their blood attack barely touches you or misses outright if you do it fast enough. I think it's also possible to morphball so that the blood flies over you, but I've never tried it.
Step 4: Run back in and whack them 1 final time to kill it.

Rinse, repeat. I can do a whole mission on like 5 salves doing that if I play careful enough.

This is a sci-fi game, with no scf-fi weapons. 50 hours in (not counting the first 120 hours as that was an early access) I sill don't have a decent guns apart from a nice guided rocket launcher. Where are the laser gatling guns, phasers, etc? There's nothing - just more damn stabbing weapons.

I just upgraded the anvil to an accelerator table and a manipulator table - any bad-ass guns to craft? No. This is sh*t. If I wanted fantasy swords and magical staffs I'd play Terraria. This is STARbound I expect laser guns god damn it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Simply make a house with a merchant. You can do it pretty easily, as you only need 2 wooden crates (There's other items, but crates are the easiest to obtain).
In previous versions, they would sell several guns at once, but now they only sell one. 2 if you are lucky, as a lot of possible slots for weapons are taken by armor sets.
If you don't like any of the guns sold by the merchant, remove the Colony Deed and place it again (You'll want to have two colony deeds so they can be in the hotbar rather than haivng to go to the inventory to place it).

That's more like it, I need more guns like this. Bad-ass lasers. I'll try TCR47's colony trick but I've seen merchants in villages before and they just sell crap.

That is why removing and replacing the Colony Deed is important: So that you can reroll the results. (The weapons will always be Common, but they level up with the planet tier. Airless planets are Tier 10 if you want to take an exploit for really powerful weapons).

might as well just install one of the 'creative' mode mods at that point.

Apart from that one, quite a few of the Uncommon and Rare guns also seem to shoot energy blasts.
