First we got late summer 2012, then end of 2012, then beginning of 2013, and now people seem to be guessing late summer 2013... It probably won't ever come out.

It's not uncommon for the release date of major games with full, multimillion dollar production teams to be pushed back. Why isn't it unreasonable that this could happen to a game that is being developed by a handful of people? This game looks to be heavy on content. The devs seem to want to release a complete game rather than release half a game and then change and/or add stuff continually in the manner Terraria was (Minecraft doesn't count because it was still in beta and is only getting relatively minor updates after official release [I imagine like what is intended for after Starbound is released]). From what I have seen of the game, it appears to be more or less finish. The core of the game itself appears to be solid and stable. The small things we are seeing now appear more along the lines of "spit and polish", indicating that a release probably isn't too far down the line.

I have never experienced a game being pushed back. The smart people put a date on the game that is far away, meaning they have plenty of time to reach that point. For some reason Starbound just changes and changes. They should've just told us late 2013 to begin with if they had no idea when it would be released.

The developers working on Starbound believe in open lines of communication, and while you might think that's not 'smart' there are equally as many other people out there who love feeling informed and involved in the road to release.

To each their own, but I prefer this style. When a company is super secretive about the progress of a new project (Half-Life 3 anyone?) the end-user only has one solution: Sit back and wait. With open and honest communication we are given several choices:

Sit back and wait. - This is still an option, which carries with it the expectation that you aren't going to be visiting the forums involving yourself with every little discussion that takes place because doing so would make you constantly be asking yourself the question "WHEN I CAN HAZ GAME"

Be Involved - This additional option that the other style does not provide you is one that allows you to be on the front-lines on development changes to the game, hearing things that are still being decided and maybe even have input on how that happens. It adds excitement to a games release, and yes some disappointment when the deadlines aren't met... but hopefully in the end you realize that the delay is leading to a better product overall... and because of your contributions, a product you will have a deeper connection to than you might have otherwise.

Except that the Starbound devs set the date far away to begin with and worked their butts off to try and meet that deadline. I guess setting a deadline and trying to meet it isn't "smart." They didn't know it wasn't going to be done by the end of the year, otherwise they, you know, wouldn't have said it. The "Reason" Starbound just changes and changes, is because they're not going to release the game until it's done. It's not a conspiracy to push the game back just to upset fans. Furthermore, how would they have known late 2011 that the game wouldn't be done until late 2013? So that kind of shoots holes in the "They should have said that to begin with" deal. Unless of course they're psychic and can see into the future to know when the game will be done. Also, regardless of if they said "Late 2013" to begin with, the game would still be out by late 2013. So either way, it comes out at the same time.

What's really the issue? If they said late 2013 would it stop people from being irritated at waiting? Doubt it. It seems to me like what's bothering people is the sheer fact that it got delayed, without looking at the evidence or reasons why. It's the actual delay that people are upset with. Games being pushed back are inevitable. It's going to happen. I can name 5 games off the top of my head that have been pushed back several months. Just this year. Saying "Oh we'll just make the release date 5 years from now to be absolutely sure it's released on time" isn't that smart. Setting a deadline is trying to meet them is quite helpful for a business. The fact that Starbound got pushed back, instead of released as an unfinished project, is much smarter. I'm sorry if people are upset by the fact that Starbound got delayed, but honestly, if the game isn't done, it simply cannot be helped. There's no easy way to "fix" it. The devs are focusing on the game as best as they can.

My issue is more philosophy than anything else. I would rather them release a beta, with some bugs or whatever, and update things as they go.... rather than wait an entire year to play the full game (which won't be bug-free anyway, no games ever are)

Also, the simple fact remains that when they open Starbound up to the public - we're gonna find bugs, exploits, and issues that a closed test just will never find. Closed testing is not an efficient or accurate way to find bugs, because a closed test is just that... closed. Starbound is only going to get better once they open it up to everyone, and people start submitting bug reports.

but at the end of the day, it's not my game... it's not YOUR game... it's their game. They can release it whenever they feel like it, and there's not much anyone can do it about it, short of complaining fruitlessly on this forum.

It's also an honest and understandable delay - ensuring the game is as good as it can be.

This is in contrast to the delay from some larger companies OR reasons games get released too soon - "we want to maximize on the holiday sales"

I think anyone who has a presence in these forums can see that Starbound is being developed by good people who just want to make a great game, not just corporate drones motivated by profit.

I fully agree. Also i could name a couple of games that got delayed a couple of years from their intended release date. Some even got scrapped in the process and have been rebuild to even take longer until release. Such stuff happens in the industry.

Rushing something just leads to a major fail. How many "big" games have been released far to early just to fail? More than enough.

Starbound will be released at some point because the dev's sure also want to see some money but they are that much dedicated that it won't be a half finished fully bugged game but rather one that seems to have more than enough community wishes fullfilled.

Has no one asked himself why features of the game are popping up that haven't been announced from the start but have been wishes from inside the community?

My guess is that cucklefish just want's to give us a great game with all we can wish for and are taking their time just to do this.

From what i have seen so far i can wait without problem because they are heading in the right direction.
