The world generation isn't properly tuned. For instance, you'll have trees spawn underwater and things like that. It's very much a work in progress.

Wait. Aren't Hylotl fish? Why can't they breath underwater? This makes no sense. I must be missing something.

They're humanoid fish. They evolved to walk on land and thus breath fresh air like anything else. Humans were fish too once and we can't breath under water.

Humans were fish too once eh? Well I don't know about that but within the lore of the game I'm willing to accept this idea. In other words; okay, makes sense...I suppose. I still think they should be able to breath under-water.

They should just be called "Barren" or "Vacuum"

The game answer is: they don't because it would be unbalanced. Or: That's what racial armor is for.

Then they should balance it out by giving the other races some special advantages. Maybe like allowing Avians to glide through the air? Idk lol I just feel that a mere cosmetic difference isn't enough.

The devs decided not to do that because it would have a factor in unfairly balancing choice, if one race had traits that made more people like that instead of another. Instead, it'll all be based on the racial armors that each race can make. Since you can obtain blueprints of the armor of other races, it works out.

They're actually Amphibians, To imply they are fish insists they needs water to live. It's one of those things that we NEED the lore to actually explains since I'm sure other races calling them fish are how a normal person would react.

I'm in the same boat as "They should just be able to breathe underwater, regardless of the armor or lack thereof they are wearing", just as I am with the Florian and energy from the sun; but the developers have a specific goal in mind. They want all the races of Starbound to be attractive without someone picking a race because of it's OP racial abilities. This way, if you want, say.. waterbreathing you can just throw on some samurai armor as a human and there you go.

Hm.. What if each race had its normal racial abilities but extremely limited without the armor on? Like The armor acted as a booster for those racial abilities instead of supplying them? Like Avians glide slightly, just slightly fall slower, Florans slightly regained energy faster in the sun, and Hylotl breathe lasted a bit longer below water?

Strictly speaking, they are amphibians. Even then, not all aquatic animals can breathe underwater (ie cetaceans)

The moons in this game are based on our moon in terms of atmosphere as well as the types of rock you can find. You can tell this because the stars are visible during both day and night cycle, this means the planet has no breathable atmosphere. The sun's rays bounce off oxygen and other gases in our atmosphere in the daytime which is why we cannot see the stars. (sorry for the layman explanation, maybe someone can say it better than I have)

Hopefully this is reflected later when non breathable atmospheres are fully implemented (has been stated they will be)

It is eventually supposed to be implemented with the Hylotl ARMOR. but at the moment it is not. I have had my Hylotl in every Hylotl armor and nope, no water breathing =(

I'm torn with that. On one hand I like the armor implementation idea...on the other hand I am sad that my race wont get a special thing.
