The game worked last night when I bought it. Woke up this morning to play it and then it just makes an error noise and doesn't do anything. It runs an instance in the background with which I have to exit with the task manager. Kind of disappointing, but I understand it is early access. This is to be expected.

Though are there any fixes for something like this? I've googled around all day and looked everywhere, and I only found a few instances similar to mine and they either had no solutions or solutions that didn't work for me. Any help? Thanks!!

This appears to be some sort of Steam Issue
If you right click, go to properties, local files tab, and click Verify Integrity of Game Cache, you might get 199 files were unable to be validated like I did
According to Steam support, browse to your Steam folder and delete the folder called appcache, then exit steam, then restart your computer

It seemed to fix my issue, although now after successfully downloading the update, I can no longer get passed the loading screen :\

    wish you luck

Bump, I am also having the exact same problem and I also tried deleting the appcache method and nothing happened.
I really want to try this game. :(

    I am seriously starting to get upset. This is absurd that they are focusing more on balance updates with a pretty large portion can't even play the damn game. Sheesh, I understand it's early access and problems are to be encountered, but can the game work first??? I got by the windows ding noise but only to be stuck at the loading screen and for it to crash and give me a stack trace error only after waiting for forever. I've been patient but no one ,except for one random dude sharing his troubles and one of his solutions, has even bothered to assist me. This is ridiculous... ;-;

The game looks fun and has potential but a lot of your early-accessers can't even get into the game without it crashing. I hope this can be resolved soon...

There are a lot of issues that will be resolved *by the updates*. They aren't solely focused on Balance.

You said you're getting an error. What's the error?

That's the problem we don't know all it does is make an 'error sound' and there isn't an error code or a box or anything just the sound.

That's why I'm asking about the error.

It could *literally* be anything, from antivirus or other security software, to bad RAM, to a bad driver, to an incompatible piece of hardware, to a bad file stuck in Steam, to a prereq not installed, to a bad Universe/Player file, to permission issues with the location to which Starbound was installed, to a problem with Starbound itself.

Try reinstalling DirectX from Starbound\_CommonRedist\ .

Actually... if you're getting an error "ding" when it tries to open Starbound, you might check Event Viewer, the Application log... there may be an entry.

Im sorry im kind of noobish when it comes to accessing stuff but I managed to try the direcx reinstalling which unfortunately didn't work.

How do you access the application log may I ask?

I was having this issue but just found a workaround in my case. Here is what was happening at first:

    Start the launcher
    Launch the server
    Launch the game and play.

Now, if I exited the game and shut down the launcher I could never open the launcher again and get an error through the Steam interface saying he game was already running. Turns out I have to shut down the server first, then run the launcher.

Personally I consider this a bug and I am hoping a dev can look into it. I shouldn't have to shut down the server to invoke the launcher again. Otherwise I am having a blast!

Run Steam as Admin, see if Starbound runs. If it does, don't keep doing that... instead, uninstall SB and reinstall to a new Steam library in, say, c:\steamlibrary
