When is there going to be incentive to build things in this game?

What I really miss about terraria is the building aspect, and all the cool blocks I could use to build things out of. In this game.... I planet hop too much to set a defined place where I actually want to build, and when you do pick a "home planet", it's gonna be really costy to travel to other planets back and forth using fuel.

Also, I'm not sure what building supplies there are other than... wood. I guess you can massacre a racial village and steal their blocks/roofs and use it as your own but I think that would take too long, unless you just get 1 type of block you want to use and put it in the 3D printer and print them out (though I'm not sure how many pixels each would cost, most things in the printer are expensive).

Though, I'm still in the gamma sector, I haven't been able to kill the dragon yet, maybe people leave building structures and stuff to endgame when they find a cool world in the X sector? I just need some feedback here. I love this game, but sometimes I just want to settle down and build things. I'm just not sure if that's a good idea right now in this game.

The paint gun is cool, I still have to make that.

The developers don't have High skills and aren't professionals , they're just normal people who gather together for make this game. Perhaps in the future NPC and self-made village gonna come.

Once we move into late beta and closer to release, I will be a building madman. I do a bit of it now, but there isnt much point. Mostly just decorate my ship. I built my first huge mansion with multiple trophy rooms before the wipe because I didnt know about them(not complaining, perfectly fine with it, steam just didn't have any warnings that first day).

To me, raiding villages and pillaging the furniture is a huge part of the fun I have. Hell, I even raided a sewer. I got a toilet from a glitch castle, made a bathroom complete with sewage pipes leading underground to a waste storage facility! This game has so many different blocks and furniture. You can eventually even wire up hand scanners and things like that in your house.

Now the only reason is for your enjoyment. But i was one of those kids that built massive lego/lockblock structures as a kid. And this game literally is like the worlds most detailed lego toy box. I can not wait for release to build stuff. And the thought of digging up a fossil, and displaying it in one of my trophy rooms......I can hardly contain myself!!

Also, you can get NPCs in your home that sell stuff. You have to get the schematics to make the item that summons them. by default, you get one for guards and basic villagers.

there are also already a few npc spawners you can find in random chests. its preferable to spawn them in a town you built for protection, rather than in your ship. im sure there will be tons more types of npc spawners in the near future

Well maybe there will be defend point x quests where you will have to build temporary fortifications. Maybe having a home planet later on will actually affect the gameplay( travelling to home planet costs less resources etc)

I would just really like it if I built something? and then the game said to me, "Hey, just wanted to affirm your construction, and tell you I love you." That would make my day. Just a little pop-up nothing more would be necessary. Even a little "Good job on your fully constructed building". And for those of us who can't "color within the lines" and end up with something less than complete, "You tried, and THAT'S what matters.".

Oh, and tower defense challenges , etc and all that good stuff would be good too I guess...

Fuel costs aren't really much. You can build whenever you feel like it.
Its only a mind game that you want to wait till sector X.
Its a psycological issue with the player where they feel "Oh there must be something cooler beyond the horizon, let me wait till then" attitude.

Starbound would require additional incentive to actually build somewhere, if they feel its important. In a game like Terraria or Minecraft its simple as you have one world. In Starbound you hop around to other worlds, this is essential to the game. So you would constantly break up and leave a base behind.

What Starbound would need is a reason to come back to a planet you previously left behind, and there are some ways of doing that. Or it might be that nomad-style is the intented route. Atleast untill you hit tier X.

When there is actual content in the game? I love the change though. THE GAME IS TOO HARD! And now it's. THERE IS NOTHING TO DO.

Game got easier now people ask for reasons to do things.. maybe if it wasn't so easy you would actually do things like make a base.

Way to be a ass, jerk.

There is incentive to build on planets, that incentive is to create stuff and make awesome houses.

Seriously, I don't get the uproar over mechanical benefits to building things on planets. If you want a mechanical benefit or reward for building a house... then perhaps this isn't the game for you. Sorry, but it's true.

Why does there need to be incentive? Like to build? BUILD! Don't? DON'T BUILD!

All I do is build small huts over my mining boreholes if I decide to dig deep into a planet. That way critters will not come from the surface to bug me. Otherwise there is really no reason to build any buildings. A home planet really means nothing. One thing that would make a huge difference is plantable trees. You can then slowly grow trees to use as building material and turn into charcoal for fuel, because right now I just rape forest planets for all trees walking in one direction until I hit the spawn point again and then leave that planet forever.

There isn't really much incentive to build in minecraft, actually. The only incentive is because nighttime monsters, and even after a certain point those aren't much to be spooked at. The reason people actually do it though is because having a house actually has benefits.
Same with Terraria, you COULD go through the whole game without building a house, but its just useful to.
Right now starbound has the same general incentive (npc spawners, harder night time enemies) but it doesn't work because of various reasons. Those main reasons being that you can store all crafting stuff on your ship, and when you wait for nighttime on your ship it only takes a minute in comparison to actually being on the planet, which makes nighttime take an almost silly amount of time. The only time I've ever found myself staying on a planet during nighttime is when I'm exploring a larger planet without dash, and even then I don't ever build a house. Maybe a little hole in the ground, but not much more than that.

So basically, add some minor benefits to staying in a planetary house rather than a ship and make nighttime longer on a ship and decrease it on planet. (to where they're about the same, but neither of them being too long).

Oh, and make going home not cost too much, or take up so much time. As it stands right now, I only ever make a planetary home at end-game.

I have been building so much stuff, I have built the best armor etc... and building is what keeps the game awesome. And there seems to be a lot of blocks more so than Terrarria at least before 1.2. And this is still beta so not even half the content is probably finished. Considering this is stage 1.

I'm waiting for the addition of faction controlled sectors, even though that's probably a year away, it's not like I'm spending a lot of time playing this; I mean, it isn't finished after all.

I really don't understand these threads. Why do people feel like there has to be a reason to build things, other than for the sole reason of enjoying building things?

Before the most recent patch that causes character wipes, a friend and i just spent hours building a house and then traveling to another planet to search for materials to make the house look nicer, or to add a room with a new theme. Simply, because we could. Not because there was a reward, or some sort of built in incentive for building something. We just built to enjoy ourselves.

This play through we have a slight skeleton of a base, but not much else, instead we're just trying to do a little more with progression.

As someone else said, fuel isn't really an issue when it comes to building a base, fuel costs are so negligible when you really look at it until you hit the second tier when you're trying to balance the coal you can use for travel, with the coal you can use to make steel. But after, and before that it's not too big of an issue.
