1. What race are you going to play, and why? Do any of the races just not appeal to you at all?

Humans are quite too boring for me. I'm a human in real life actually, why would I like to play a human in a space-planet-exploration-videogame like Starbound.
I started with a female Floran and really like her. After the wipe I may switch to Apex, because I love monkeys, but I don't know yet.
Florans are so cute with her special language and, well, they're actually flowers, how cool is that.

2. What are your plans for your first character? Rush through to the highest danger levels? Be a peaceful farmer?

Looking for a nice home sweet home planet and shape it as I like, building a home building, changing its terrain etc.

3. What do you like to do in the game? Is mining something that never gets boring to you? Are you a treasure hunter?

I love visiting a whole new world, never knowing what is waiting for me. Collecting all the cool stuff like decoration to scan them so I have always access to a huge list of furniture. I can then revisit my home planet to improve the buildings and set sail for another journey.

4. Are you going to play with other people? If so, with friends or on a big/small public server?

At the beginning I will stay solo, enjoying the game as it is, the music, the ambiance and to see all the features. Later on I and some friends of mine will also play online on a bug public server.

5. How many hours do you think you're going to play?

I don't know. Many hours. This game is addicting, I catched myself playing late in the night.

6. What combat style do you prefer? Melee, Ranged, etc. Will you fight every enemy you come across?

TWO HANDED HAMMER ONE HIT ACTION First I thought I will prefer ranged combat, but while playing I found a nice two handed hammer so I was able to barely one hit everything around me. On higher planets, where the monsters need to take more than one hit, combating is much fun jumping around, dodging the enemies attack so I can place my hit him with my very slow, high damage hammer.
Well I only attack enemies attacking me, so I would never kill a peaceful floran or something like that. I just can't do that. I'm not that cruel, even it's just a game.

7. Are you going to have one "Main" base, multiple smaller bases or just wander around? What biome do you think you'll enjoy the most?

As mentioned I will have one nice home planet. I will not only build a house or something on it, I will change the whole planet as I like, so it will be all mine.

 

1) Personally I prefer Avian, I just like birds I guess. If I had to mention a race that doesn't appeal to me at all I would have to say Apex, they just aren't exactly the.. Prettiest I suppose.
2) My first character has been mostly exploration with very little focus on making a home planet, I always figure the next planet I land on might be better so why settle down?
3) Mining gets dull after a while but there's always that part of me hoping to find treasure for sure! Coming across a generated dungeon in the hopes that there might even be just ONE chest gets me all giddy.
4) I'll probably only play with my friends, but I might open up and join a small server once the beta gets progressed a little further and large-scale teamwork becomes much more prominent!
5) How many hours? I already have 30 hours and there's only more content coming! I wouldn't be surprised if I ended up with 2,000 hours before I'm finished with this universe. c:
6) Ranged for sure! I've always been into picking off opponents from afar, but that's mostly because I won't have to wear such tanky armors and can wear something a little more classy!
7) Wander around definitely, you never know when you might find a planet with something better than the one you're already on! I do like the ice biomes though, even if you need to bundle up a little. I just loooove the snow!

I'm sort of thinking either Avian, Floran or Nova kid, maybe human.

First character will build a kingdom that will span many planets and pave the way for my other characters to explore the universe.

Mining gets boring, I go on an adventure. I seek to find all the secrets of everything.

26 hours a day.

Ranged and yes everything that hurts me must die.

2.Building and wandering around planets.
3. Explore planets, look for rare loot and build homes and cities.
4. Most likely switching it around with solo/friends/big servers.
5. 1-3hours a day, (probably more if I can't pry myself away from it)
6. Mixed. I like using both Range and Melee depending on the situation or my mood.
7. A Main base and several large and smaller bases established across the galaxy.

My first Avian was Moondrop, and just like me it was more of a nervous fear of everything. hiding away at the sight of everything and [accidentally killing NPCs out of terror oops]

Exploring in general is lots of fun! mining can get pretty harsh on my carpel tunnel sometimes.

i want to! but i haven't found anyone open yet uvu

Probably 5-20 a week depending on how fast i can get commissions done

Ranged, i'm not good at close combat!

usually main base with small hideaways scattered everywhere. as for biomes hm.. usually i'm a jungle sorta lady. but a snow biome to visit everynow and again is nice too!

 

Run into settlements and slaughter anything that moves.

I enjoy birds, and I hate humans in general.

I tend not to be overly aggressive, and enjoy building. I will probably look for construction challenges.

Exploring is the most fun of it, besides building.

No idea really. I find it hard to trust even friends.

Already played 50...

I tend to melee over ranged, though I know I can't avoid using ranged at times. I only defend myself, and am just fine leaving passives alone.

Both. Once I get settled, I will likely make a large main base where I can do everything, then maybe a few smaller bases elsewhere. I intend on keeping my ship as my "home" however. As for biomes, haven't decided. Maybe I will try and build a base on a moon.

 

1. I was playing an avian but I'm not especially fond of the armor so i think after the reset I will switch to hylotl (AMAZING ship) or possibly human (like their char customization and seem well balanced).
2. My first char which I've now gotten to imperium was just a general mess around figuring stuff out kinda person.
3. I like exploring new planets one because its interesting and two because that seems to yield best stuff. I imagine though once they finish fleshing out the underground I will be an avid miner (giant underground floran forest maybe?).
4. I'm currently having fun playing on my own and with 2-3 friends of mine.
5. I've already clocked in 60 and plan to do who knows how much more just in the progenitor stage of the beta.
6. I like A good melee fight every now and then but i prefer ranged with high mobility.
7. Main plan is to have most of my stuff on my ship (transfers between mp and sp), but at some point I definitely want to build and populate a village.

2) Imma be a heartless person that only listens to laws and guards because they could kill me. Don't care about anyone else.
3) Killing and playing instruments. Also, finding treasure is also good
4) Will have one character for Solo and one for multiplayer.

Install satellite dishes in Avian Infinite city sprawls, convince the them that the UFO is simply 'renovating' - profit.

There is a possibility that I will spend a period of time as each race, though I do have character plans that involve specific races. Human, Glitch and Novakid are most likely.

For my first character I plan to be human, modeling my character off of one of my Mass Effect playthroughs. This character will be a bit of a mix, but the overall goal is to develop terraform and develop a city on one of the planets.
3. What do you like to do in the game? Is mining something that never gets boring to you? Are you a treasure hunter?
Exploration is the fun part for me. I enjoy the mining aspect, especially when I stumble across a large deposit of a specific ore that I'm stocking up on, but I also enjoy the little mysteries that crop up. A village of Avians with a thriving bazaar, an underground tomb, an Apex research station - these discoveries bring me the most excitement.

Most likely not. I'm more of a solo gamer, to be perfectly honest.
5. How many hours do you think you're going to play?
Hundreds, most likely.

Thus far I've engaged in a mixture of the two, maintaining my distance with a hunting bow and switching to sword and shield when necessary.
7. Are you going to have one "Main" base, multiple smaller bases or just wander around? What biome do you think you'll enjoy the most?
I suppose it depends on the character I want to play, but with my first playthrough I will likely have one "main" base that will slowly develop into a thriving community. Currently, I'm most fond of forest biomes.

 

1. I plan on playing a Glitch, and a Hylotl. Mostly for the aesthetics for the Hylotl, but I love the back story for the Glitch. As for Races I don't like? Mmm, well, 50% of the reason why I bought the game is because I find all the races pretty awesome. If I -had- to say, probably the humans, because humans are in every game ever.

2. Honestly, a mix of getting to the highest danger levels, while going slow enough to not miss all the cool stuff the game has to offer. Get gear, go to dungeons, get more gear, etc. And considering how much I get hit/how long I take to mine, I'll need lots of food too. So more of a violent farmer?

3. I love to get upgrades, and to do that I gotta mine. Gotta suffer through it so, in a way, it doesn't get -too- boring. At the same time, you can get treasure while mining, so that's a win-win! I also like to build stuff, possibly with the treasures from all that mining. Boss-hunting is also a thing I like to do!

4. I want to play Singleplayer AND Multiplayer! I want to try my hand at Starbound Roleplay, so I think a larger server might be what I'll end up on.

5. I'll probably play the same amount of hours as how many planets exist in the game.

6. I like to always have Melee and Ranged options. Nothing is more satisfying than knocking an enemy back with a 2hed hammer, taking out a shotgun, and finishing them off! -ALL OF THEM-. Well, except passive critters and NPCs. 'das meeeean.

7. Well, since the starship can be customize, that -IS- going to be my home base. I'm likely to just wander around, unless I get to a really nice snow biome. I -love- snow, so, naturally, I'm going to make a death fortress there!... I mean a nice little getaway for my Glitch to rest his circuits.


No matter what I do though, I'm sure I'll have fun. Even in the early beta the game is still awesome!

I really like both the Floran and Hylotl due to their aesthetics and lore. I've played both fairly extensively (relative to overall play time), and picking just one to stick with may as well be a coin flip. I don't particularly dislike any of the races, and I'll probably get around to playing with them each at least a little.

Once the threat of character wipes has passed and I settle on one, I plan on pacing myself. I intend to passively roleplay my chosen race (no massacring towns on a whim, for example), and explore planets completely (outside and in) before moving on to the next.

I enjoy a little of everything, but exploring and finding loot is my passion. Mining can definitely get boring if there's nothing to discover while doing it, but being able to clear multiple blocks at a time alleviates what would normally be mind-numbing busywork in other mining/crafting games. I'm generally a completionist who tries to collect everything, but the variability of this game's content and item distribution will likely prevent me from doing so, which is no problem whatsoever. It'll encourage roleplaying and more natural progression on my part, which is more than welcome as someone who has an almost obsessive compulsive desire to play optimally when possible.

Single-player for me. I generally multiplay with only those I know personally, and the only two I know that have a slight interest in these types of games are too wrapped up in other things to play online anymore. As well, I have an organic style of construction that favors function over form, so playing with randoms or forum-goers online is out as well simply to spare them my eyesores.

5. How many hours do you think you're going to play?
If similar games are any indication, an obsessive marathon of about 100 hours worth of playtime, followed by sporadic returns when the mood strikes.

A mix, with slight bias towards ranged (once guns become a bit more common). I'll be more or less just interested in hunting openly hostile targets.

If I find a planet that I REALLY like, maybe I'll consolidate my gains on it, but otherwise I'll be keeping all of my essentials on board my spaceship with scattered small, functional shelters across planets. I don't have a favorite biome at this point in time.

 

So, as the game currently stands I've reduced my approach to a rather broken formula, until the next major balance patch.

In any sector other than alpha, I head directly to the highest level desert or snow planet I can find (cause they have a lot of 'soft' rock), and burrow straight down several thousand feet where the ore deposits seem much larger. Then I begin mining, using walls to prevent all contact with creatures, any of which would kill me instantly. After a couple hours, I'll have several hundred of whatever kind of ore that sector offers, as well as a selection of high-level weapons from chests. I then port back to the ship and construct the boss device to get me to the next sector - I may or may not bother making armor, as it doesn't functionally do much of anything past the lowest levels of beta sector at the moment.

Wash rinse repeat. I'm gonna say that both the combat system (weapons, armor, and the mechanics around them) as well as the monster behaviors need a large amount of work to bring the full potential of the game to life. Right now fighting monsters is usually suicidal (1-hit kill in most cases), uninteresting due to their simple behaviors and trivial walling tactics - and most importantly, completely unnecessary, as they can neither hinder you from reaching your goals quickly, nor provide you with anything you need.

So far as advancement goes, there really isn't much point to exploring the surface of planets, because they are relatively speaking more dangerous, and past level 1, I've never had a vendor sell me a useful weapon, armor, or blueprint. The only vendor who has ever been really useful was a strange hermit I once discovered waaay underground who sold gold pickaxes on my starting world.

Finding cool LOOKING places, or story elements is the best reason to explore currently, but its such an undirected experience (no quests, no hints/maps suggesting coordinates to explore, no story critical locations) that it loses some of that flavor. Also, you simply never get anything you need from the cool places - even most techs aren't really necessary currently, given the fruitlessness of combat - though raiding them for deco items is worthwhile.

A mix, definitely need a home base. Exploration is needed to get unique decor for my base.

Making a cool base is fun, but exploring new and unique areas is also a plus, even if I don't find treasure there. It's about the journey not the result.

Private server with 4-5 friends

Too many, 55 hours and counting

If I can survive, melee. If not; dirt is the most lethal weapon in the game. Sniper rifles are great fun too.

A base per sector. Hoping to find the Ocean biomes.

I've explored to the bottom of the lava and above the asteroids. Have my Raven armor which allows me to fly infinitely and fast with bubble boost. A pen 41 sniper rifles whose shots ricochet. I have more recipes in my 3D printer than on the workbench. Soon it will all be gone with the character reset.

While combat balancing is obviously needed, I hope to see more of the story. I really hope for the named books to be filled with text. I love exploring these worlds already.

Gonna play with close friends most the time but I will also try to play on a larger server

I will most likely play 5-4 hours per day problably more depends on how little sleep i can run on

Mostly ranged gonna use the techs to stay at a safe distance from creatures and not take any damage if possible.

Gonna build one massive base that will span most of a planet just out of sheer boredom so that I can have an awesome place to return to after a quest.

I made a human because I'm boring.. and I wanted to rush into the game, lol.

Doing a lot of farming and burger making. A lot of exploring to find ores and stuff.

I love to mine and I love building houses... and stealing furniture from the towns.

I would like to play with other people but I don't know how a server would work... Like what do you do with the other people? Lol... I'm currently playing by myself or with my boyfriend when he's home.

I played about 6 hours today... Super bored. Starbound is a great way to pass the time.

I like ranged better than melee... but that's only because face to face combat is scary! My favorite combat style is called 'trap them into a box and run,' or 'make them attack you and jump over a ravine so they fall into it and get stuck.'

Currently I have one main base on a forest biome. I want to make more bases around the different planets, but I'm a hoarder and I want all of my things in one place. I have an issue with getting rid of things so I had to steal a TON of wardrobes from the ape place...

I'm playing as an avian. Don't really know why to be honest, though I saw some snarky comments that definitely help.

More like slow and steady, prepare myself for the next tier plenty and then go for it.

For the most part I'm going to play solo, though if I can find a good community I might join in with others.

Generally I prefer melee, though I don't shy away from ranged. And for whether I fight everything I encounter... >=D Only those that try to kill me first, but oh yeah.

I prefer one main base with a few outposts.
