  1. Mercury Gilado

    Mercury Gilado Existential Complex

    1. Florans. Just because, I really don't know why. I think flowers are neat, and Florans are pretty unique. Humans are vanilla, so no thanks. Apex are too 60's, but their lore is cool. Avians are alright, as well, but they strike me as having a playing style I wouldn't use. Glitch are meh, and I don't know too much about them. Hylotl are in the same boat (heh) as Apex; neat lore, unappealing aesthetic. Novakid are cool, they remind me of Elementals from MTG, but I won't touch them, for the reasons I won't touch Avians.
    2. I'll be thorough with my playing, but I'll play riskily. I'll always try to pursue goals that should be pursued by a stronger character, and rely on evasion (you are a ghost, Snake) for most of my adventures. Living dangerously in 2D games is always really fun.
    3. Mining is relaxing, and I'll be doing plenty of it. However, I'd rather explore lots of different planets. I'll probably get caught up in research, though, just you wait.
    4. I'll play with others. Public, probably, since I have no friends, and if I did they wouldn't be playing Starbound.
    5. I've clocked around 70 hours in Terraria, and in about 60% of that time I acquired every worthwhile item and defeated all the bosses. Starbound looks to be bigger and more deep that Terraria, so maybe 71 hours. I can't get into hardcore gaming. If Starbound really pulls me in, maybe 100.

    EDIT:
    6. Mid-ranged, probably. By that, I mean weapons that aren't good for fight across a large map, but are good for keeping enemies at arm's length in a brawl. Shotguns, whips, maybe swords with a shockwave attack. As for how I take enemies on, it depends on how they spawn. If it's an endless slog like in Terraria, I'll leave them be unless they're in my path of exploration, or I'll build around them if that's something you can do. If not, I'll just leave them alone.

    1. What race are you going to play, and why? Do any of the races just not appeal to you at all?

Going to play Human first, because it will be "me" in game. Roleplaying as a member of another species is fine, but I don't want to mix this with first impressions of the game. Though I will make alts of other races, especially Floran (cute evil orcs = awesome), Glitch (great lore and concept, beautiful art style) and Novakid (glows in the dark, they look cool hot).

I do not like Apex at all. They are too similar to humans. The fact that they are basically another species of the hominidae family makes them less interesting by default. We already have humans, why another great ape? It would be obviously bad idea to add neanderthals as a separate species into the game. Of course, some people would like it, but sapiens are too close to neanderthals in basically everything, and Apex is not far away. Concept of "de-evolving physically to evolve mentally" makes zero sense, especially considering that non-human great apes tend to be more fit physically than homo sapiens. I just can't make myself to suspend the disbelief in regards to this race. My last choice.

    2. What are your plans for your first character? Rush through to the highest danger levels? Be a peaceful farmer?

My first character, probably a Human in single player mode, will be slow and safe explorer/builder. Build a shelter before doing anything. Build a power base with all available renewable resource farms. Craft best available stuff. Okay, now I feel ready to poke my nose out of the yard. But after that — main quest, slowly but steadily, up to the end. Endgame — terraforming of extremely dangerous planet as a new homeworld. Also, searching through galaxy for interesting things and beings to fill this homeworld with.

    3. What do you like to do in the game? Is mining something that never gets boring to you? Are you a treasure hunter? If you're a builder, what do your houses/bases generally look like?

Mining gets boring after days with several hours per day, but that is more than most people can handle anyway. I like to shape the universe to my vision, which is beneficial and idealistic. Building stuff, helping people, that sort of thing. Also I hope to be able to enhance my spaceship as fast as possible, because it is always with me, on every planet I am.

Do not really care about treasure hunting, but of course won't ignore the opportunity. Still, prefer to craft items myself.

    4. Are you going to play with other people? If so, with friends or on a big/small public server?

Yeah, I plan to play with some friends on private server. And I may try public servers, why not. But single player experience is the one most important for me.

    5. How many hours do you think you're going to play?

Oh, I don't know. More than it is healthy. Some days it may come to 12 hours, if the game is really good and I have nothing better to do, which is kinda often in autumn.

    6. What combat style do you prefer? Melee, Ranged, etc. Will you fight every enemy you come across?

I tend to play two archetypes: the mage and the warrior. So:

Character 1: pure long-range damage dealer with area of effect capability. Think rocket launcher (preferably with rapid fire) as a main weapon of choice, not sniper rifle. But, of course, whatever will feel better. Still, basically an engine of ranged destruction, if he will be a glass cannon that's fine, but if will be possible to avoid without sacrificing much of the damage output — that's even better.

Character 2: pure melee off-tank. I don't really like to be a main tank with shield and mitigation maxed, without any damage output. So, this one will probably be using either two-handed melee weapon or dual wielding option, depending on power of each weapon kind (I do not have an aesthetic preference here), with really heavy armor and really great damage mitigation, but not with sacrificing damage power.

Other characters probably will be silly and/or experimental. Like pyromaniac Floran, who ironically loves fire. Or Glitch with the most ridiculous and unpopular weapon choice, he is severely glitched anyway. Or cowardly Avian armed with small and energy cheap gun, wearing heavy health armor with various mobility buffs — his damage will suck, but he is unkillable kiter with a large margin for errors.

I also do like to mix stuff, so gunslinger Hylotl or samurai Novakid.

But I am a hoarder, so all my characters eventually will be equipped with everything that exists in the universe.

On fighting enemies I met — well, most of them anyway, because of loot. If loot is unnecessary, then I will skip them. But if there are some ways to change enemies into neutrals and maybe friends, then I will try and use one.

    7. Are you going to have one "Main" base, multiple smaller bases or just wander around? What biome do you think you'll enjoy the most? Do you have some sort of preliminary layout of your base and/or other construction plans in mind?

First of all, I am going to transform my ship into as efficient as possible mobile base, filled with renewable resource farms. There will be garden of food at least, if it is at all possible. Because the ship is always there with me, no matter where I am, so that's a high priority.

    Now to a bases issue.

When I'll settle on homeworld, of course I'll have one primary base, which will be filled with everything I need, will be completely safe from hostile monsters and will look good. I *hope* that I will be careful enough to build another hideouts on homeworld wherever it suits my fancy. Oh, and my homeworld, as been said before, is supposed to be high level planet, eventually level 100.

When I will explore planets other than homeworld, I still plan to build local primary base near spawn spot (even better, around it) on each and every one I visit for more than a few minutes. I like to bring civilization to the wilderness. After that primary base, it totally depends on my needs. I don't see the purpose in making more than one large facility per world, but it may be useful, for example, to build secondary shelter near dungeon entrance, preferably with some kind of quick travel link to primary base.

I think I'll enjoy some sort of extreme jungle with really large trees, better yet if some trees are not just trees you can drop with a few hacks of an axe, but real, blocky parts of landscape. With falling physics, of course, hanging trunks are obsolete idea. Even better if there will be some lava on the surface. So, volcanic jungle. If there is such thing.

I probably won't settle on inherently hostile planet, like one with no atmosphere or with deadly low temperatures, but I still do like challenge in form of tricky landscape with pools of death and horrible monsters. Of course, I will visit these planets and conquer them as necessary, but don't want such place as my homeworld. I live in Russia already, and winter is coming.

I've had a preliminary concept for my base layout design in this post.

    8. Do you have a backstory for your character(s)? Do you have a picture of your character(s), from character creator and/or drawn manually as a piece of art?

I don't have any backstory, and probably never will beyond whatever is provided by game introduction. My characters are supposed to grow and develop during the game itself, not carrying imaginary experiences from times never happened.

I hope that character creator will be expanded in final version, so I don't have any images from there. As for manual images — well, not an artist, perhaps will try to do it later nevertheless, at least for my human character. Got it in my head anyway, and his appearance (of course) is based on my own. Yeah, that's going to be me in spa-ace!

    9. Are you planning to use game mods, and if you are, which ones do you hope to create and/or use?

Sure I will, always do, but not at start. Also I hope to finish unmodded game with one character first, but probably won't be able, because "meh, this mod is so minor it doesn't count" issue always converts to "screw this, this mod is awesome and I am never going to play without it anymore".

I am especially interested in melee weaponry mods, being an enthusiast of sword (and spear, and axe, no matter) fighting in real life. It has been said that it is easy to add content via notepad and paint, and if that is so, then I probably will paint more hairstyles for humans and glitches, oh and more realisticish melee weapons of course.

Also I hope to find some "no-nonsense hardcore scientific realism mod" made by people who have more motivation and skills than I am. Sure, Starbound seems cool as it is, whimsical and somewhat silly, but enthusiast of natural sciences and hard sci-fi in me longs for more gritty, realistic experiences of space exploration.

    2) If my excursions in Terraria are anything to go by, I'll likely stockpile loads of resources and slowly dominate the game. I like to be prepared.
    3) Mining can be fun. I really like exploring though. But first I should develop a home base of sorts, make a jumping-off point for large expeditions.
    4) I'd like to play with friends. My girlfriend and I are both quite excited, as we may actually get to play something together for once!
    5) Hours? Too many. :D

I really like building. I don't do a whole lot of it because right now worlds in-game are so temporary, but when we release the beta I really want to build a town based off Winterfell in A Song of Ice and Fire, from Glitch materials. :geek:

1a. A Novakid, definitely. They're what got me into Starbound in the first place.
1b. I'll probably take a curious yet cautious approach, exploring but trying not to stray too far from a "base" of sorts. I'm a homebody, and I guess it still shows when I play games. (*exploring* "Wait, where am I? Oh God, where's my house?! I wanna go home!" *frantically tries to return*)
    2. I think I'll probably do a lot of mining.
    3. I'll probably play by myself and try a small server if I'm feeling adventurous.
    4. Given my past experiences with MMO's, I'll probably binge play for the first few days and then become a more casual player as time goes by.

  11. 1. Glitch.
Robot. Knights. Fricking, robot knights. Two best things ever, combined.
I'm getting kinda sick of the Florans to be honest. I'll still play one, but I probably won't use it often.
The whole eating other races shtick is really getting old.
In order from best to worst,
Glitch, Novakid, Avian, Hylotl, Apex, Human, Floran.

    3.
I will probably enjoy setting up elaborate traps that have a 17% chance of exploding into flame.

I will most likely be trying everything, but most of the time, I will probably be by myself, or on a small server with some freinds.

    5.

Hylotl as primary, Apex as secondary.

Seruki the Hylotl is going to become the First Lady of an ice planet with many sky cities.
    3. What do you like to do in the game? Is mining something that never gets boring to you? Are you a treasure hunter?
These will be the voyages of the SVHG Gispouhiffs (translated into Tarokii from the word "frontier"). Its continuing mission, to explore strange new world. To seek out -- Bah, you know the story.
    4. Are you going to play with other people? If so, with friends or on a big/small public server?

    1. I'll play as an Avian first. I just like their designs the most of the races. I probably avoid humans or the Glitch, as I feel they are too generic.
    2. I am a really spoiled player in most games; I'm going to try avoiding looking at a wiki or a guide for Starbound, which this will be the first game in a while I try to do so in. In regards to behavior, I'm a hoarder and I have a feeling I am going to have to break out of that habit.
    3. I do not know what I like to do in Starbound, as I have yet to play it... However, I felt as though Starbound looks like it opens up the combat a little more than Terraria, which is an interesting concept for me, as I really enjoy combat in games that include building and exploration.
    4. Yet another thing I was considering. I know I will want to play with friends, and I am perfectly capable of running a private server. However, Starbound's multiplayer really intrigues me and I am thinking of trying to get into a large server. I am just worried of other players, as I find players online like to rush things and get as much as possible as quickly as possible and I, ironically, do not have the patience for that anymore. I prefer to take things slow and appreciate the moment.
    5. It depends when it comes out. It will probably be about 2-3 hours a day which, to be fair, its pretty much all the extra time I have any day of the week. I am currently looking forward to the new Borderlands 2 DLC and have been playing Defiance with my brother while following the show. So, if Starbound's beta comes out in conflict with these things it will be hard to say.

    *edit*

    6. Ranged, and most likely not. I will not go out of my way to kill enemies, but if they are in my way or I need something from them, then there is no reason not to.

    1. I don't know why, but Avians don't excite me at all. Also, humans are boring and uninteresting, but the fact that the female hairstyles have that impressive set of pigtails sells it as a possibility at least...
Not sure what race I will play first though; I just cannot decide!

    2. Fight things, mine, get cool stuff... a little of everything, I guess.

    3. My buildings are generally tiny huts, but I am always wanting to make something cool. Maybe inspiration will strike this time? Eventually I will end up making that Cave Story map, eventually...
Fighting is the coolest part of these games, though, along with getting equipment and totally pimping my character's looks.

    4. I might play with my brother, but maybe not with many other people.

    5. Too many

    6. We'll see what the actual combat is like first. Hopefully it doesn't end up like Terraria where the only viable build is the highest defense armor coupled with a ranged weapon (or cheap gimmicks).

TL;DR My answer is 'all of the above' for every question :p

    1. What race are you going to play, and why? Do any of the races just not appeal to you at all?
    1. I will start off playing a Human. It may be simple, but I like identifying with my main character.
My favorite racial background is the Glitch though, with Florans having my favorite 'attitude', and Nova Kids are just cool all around. (Yet another reason to play a human to start, as you can kind of encompass most of these things in your own story as a human).

I love that Avians and Hylotls are in the game, but can't picture myself playing either (although hopefully I can craft some Hylotl outfits for my Human).

Apex I detest. Not totally sure why yet, but I dislike both them and their culture. This isn't a bad thing though...having a group you dislike is just as important in a game as having ones you like : )

    2. What are your plans for your first character? Rush through to the highest danger levels? Be a peaceful farmer?

Advance quickly, but experience everything along the way. I want to have access to everything possible, but the journey is just as much (or more) of an adventure.

    3. What do you like to do in the game? Is mining something that never gets boring to you? Are you a treasure hunter? If you're a builder, what do your houses/bases generally look like?

If I focus on any one area in a game I usually get bored, so I just go where my whims lead. In games like Starbound I usually start off with a pretty predictable flow though.
a: get a grasp of mechanics
b: build a very small, utilitarian base
    c: stockpile resources
    d: create a comfortable, self sufficient fortress/castle/compound
    e: explore/hunt/stockpile more resources/major building projects/whatever I feel like doing : )

    4. Are you going to play with other people? If so, with friends or on a big/small public server?

    All of the above.

I like having a private game to run around in, but I'll also play with as many close friends as I can convince to play (I've run friends and family servers for minecraft and terraria, and will run one for Starbound if at all possible too).

It's also fun joining in massive public servers from time to time...always new ideas and new people to meet.

    5. How many hours do you think you're going to play?

Depending on the release date I'll probably take a couple days off work to binge on the game when it first comes out (10-12 hours a day).

The first couple weeks it'll probably eat up all my free time (40 hours a week). After that it just depends and will probably fluctuate between 5-20 hours a week.

    6. What combat style do you prefer? Melee, Ranged, etc. Will you fight every enemy you come across?

Not sure yet, but if it's similar in feel to terraria I'll be primarily melee with some ranged.

Every enemy I come across will have to die at least once...after that it depends on how annoying they are and if they're worth the trouble ; )
