Actually, I think I can identify this abomination!

It's a mutated version of the Geoduck, a large saltwater clam that has a long 'siphon' to stick out from the shell and feed, filter water, or.. 'reproduce.'

This is a picture of a Geoduck taken from the wild. It's not what you think it is...

Hi! Since the thread was meant to list things ppl don't like about Starbound I made the pool to cover situations where people wouldn't have anything to list but wanted to share their thoughts anyway. Also the plan was to keep the thread as clean as possible.

One of the things that has particularly bothered me actually (apart from the obvious monster generator) is the combat. The updates on the blog post shown combat being strategic with shields and "rushing in" will get you killed - in a similar manner to Monster Hunter, I'm gathering.

However, looking at the Yogscast demo video, all the combat does feel a bit of a "miss". The weapons and guns don't seem to have any real "impact" to them, and knockback looks rather "skatey" right now. Lots of the guns I saw being fired feel a lot more like Nerf Guns than actual weaponry. Even the rocket launchers.

Even melee weapons in games like Minecraft and pre-Hardmode Terraria had some sort of "oomph" to them - even if it was small. When I look at the melee weapons in Starbound, it looks like the weapon part of the sword is the breeze it makes by swinging, given how enemies react to it.

Perhaps this could be fixed by giving weapons a "charge up" time when using them, or adding a few "on hit" mid-animations or something. I'm not too sure.

Another thing that's been bothering me is the sound effects - this may also be related to the Nerf Gun issue above, but a lot of the sounds I've heard in the game feel just.. off. Some monster sounds, most ranged weapon sounds. A lot of them just don't seem to fit - they're probably just placeholder sounds (HOPEFULLY just placeholder sounds) but it's hard to enjoy using a giant minigun when it sounds like I'm firing a clip full of feathers.

Strange. I hadn't noticed, but you're on to something. I never could place my finger on it. My attention was always focused on the mobs. You bring some really great observations to the thread! Really, really keen observations. The animations, the kickback, knock back. I've noticed how the combat doesn't seem as sharp as it was made to seem, by the developers. Tiy wanted "thoughtful" combat, I remember that quote as well. I'll go back and review some of the released footage, but you hit the nail on the head. And described it pretty well, while I couldn't even put a finger on it.

Did I say something should be removed because I do not like it? No, so I may be a hypocrite because I am human but I am not a hypocrite when it comes to my statement.

I don't know you personally, so I have no clue on whether you're a hypocrite or not. So I haven't called you one. But, you did mock yourself when you pulled everyone's leg with your post. Don't take it so harsh. It was a dose of your own medicine.

I think the problem is that in reality, a 2D 'platformer' game can't hold 'thoughtful combat' unless it chains your feet to the ground. You're just going to end up jumping around like a mad git while shooting at enemies sliding along the ground, lest you be run through and pushed around to the point of frustration.

Well dunno, games like Gunpoint and Mark of the Ninja have demonstrated sidescrollers can have a very tactical and diverse gameplay too!

Perhaps I was a bit misleading, my mistake. I didn't necessarily mean that as a platformer-type, it can't have meaningful combat, but it does suffer from a similar problem that Terraria has, and I'm not sure how to pinpoint exactly what that is. All that I do know is that a core gameplay mechanic seems to be holding back the combat a great deal that is also present in Terraria.

Yeah, still, judging by blog posts the devs have thought about combat more, and apparently this will involve dungeon designs and things like that. too.

I understand that, but I just wanted to be able to choose something in the poll. It disappoints me, and possibly a few others, that people who have replied are forbidden to answer the poll, because some people like answering polls for the sake of answering polls.

P.S: Yes, I am aware that I didn't really argue my point that well. Think what you will of it
You know that someone's posted something good when your first reaction to it is "My god, that's horrifying!"

You are not forbidden to answer the pool at all. What may be happening is that the pool is over and can get no more votes.
The maximun number of days for a pool is 7... i think.

No, I don't mean that it won't let me answer the poll. I mean that there aren't any valid answers for people who replied. Also, please stop calling it a pool. It's kinda bugging me.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. From the videos and streams I've seen I like how the monster generator is.

I feel I haven't seen enough of SB as a whole to find something blatantly unappealing about it.
