Well... you do realize it's not THAT random, right? I mean, they have different generation templates for dungeons, wilderness and so on, so there won't be any uberweird nonsensical encounters.

Too true. Hopefully they create some way to un-randomize the monster generator, so that it can only select from certain parts while in certain enviroments. Also, it should be able to limit the color palette to match the planets color scheme. So monsters fit in much more fluidly.

Where did you hear that? Its wonderful, but I've never heard news like that.

    Great phylosophy, padawan! :lolwut:

    Now think about this:
It's common sense that when someone focus on doing one thing instead of doing everything, this one thing is done better.
But in a bigger scale, should everything focus on single things?
Should a band focus on one instrument? why would we need drums when we have the guitar already, right?
Should all the ants work by gathering leafs? Of course, why would they need ants digging tunnels or defending the colony!
Should everyone work with the same thing? We don't need medics, teachers or artists, let everyone be a cop! :sarcasm:

Inside starbound, there are dungeons, items and monsters focusing on a dark themes, and there's also dungeons, monsters and items focusing on silly stuff!
Starbound have individual parts of it focused on different things, but in the bigger scale it covers multiple mechanics and themes to please a large variety of players :giggle:

Band [members] focus individually on one instrument. SomeONE plays guitar, someONE else plays drums, someONE else plays the kazoo. But individually they focus on one instrument a piece.

    Same with ants.

    Same with society.

We each individually SPECIALIZE on one thing to contribute to the collective, for the benefit of the whole. [/off topic]

Now I understand what you're saying. But it sucks. How does that one go again: "The person who wants to please all of the people, all of the time. Pleases none of the people..." so on, so forth.

We are not complaining about variety, at all. Variety is oh so tasty. But rather that Starbound has gotten silly lately with content that is being added. We expected a serious space epic, and we're moving towards Spaceballs.

SB doesn't focus on pleasing everyone :)
it's actually very specific in some points! it's a 2d sidescroller game made with pixel art
but it does have variety in it's content :p

plus, every silly content added so far can be avoided!
silly monsters can be killed (or their environment can be avoided), silly colorful techs can be ignored (they showed us 3 "dash" techs; the butterfly, the bubble, and back then that shiny dash tech. you can use the one that pleases you), etc

also, this is the first image ever released about this game
pretty bad move to expect a dark space epic
IMO, the fact that it evolved from "silly colorful image" to "has both dark and silly content" is pretty good

if your expecting 2d pixel dead space you should be somewhere else. also. i think this entire whole thing that everyone is flipping their dips about, was sparked because of po. people. po is 1 enemy. in 1 dungeon. that is probably semi rare. this game also has black spider creatures that spit acid at you. and a race of cannibal aliens. what more do you want? seriously. like, no one ever said that this was going to be some sort of serious horror space thriller bullshit. its a game for all ages. something 5, 10, and 20 year olds can enjoy.

Agreed, again. It seems like they were going for a lolsorandumb thing with the bosses. I'll get crap for it, but I really disliked the flying saucer penguin as a boss. I understand it's a game and the devs can do whatever they want, but I just don't like some of the monsters they're putting in.

I'm curious to know why you assume they are going random dumb with bosses :)
So far the devs showed us 1 boss and I didn't remember they mentioning bosses were random generated

I do agree that it might break immersion to spawn cute fluffly monsters inside a dark eerie dungeon, but minecraft already showed us that it's possible to control randomness to an extent (by not spawning biomes that are too different near each other)

I really didn't mean to say bosses as in multiple. My bad, should've caught that myself. It just seems they've taken the uber random route with monsters in general, the penguin boss included.

You mean you want aliens to fit your human tastes. You're speaking as if aliens live and sense the same as humans.

On top of that, here you go:
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Yes, these may work in some situations, but don't they look "silly?" They live on Earth and come from the same tree of life as us, which does demand the rules you fairly proposed.

The thing is that a different tree of life can spring up using different areas of the electromagnetic spectrum than our tree of life, so comparing our ONE example of life to ONLY theoretical other lives is futile in a way.
Their way of survival could demand different objectives.

However, after all of that is said and done we haven't truly experienced the game in its context and all of the monster generation that has mostly been hidden from us.
I do agree to some level of consistency to fit certain themes only because we are people and we expect some familiarity in a game made for people(even if it's exploring the universe of unknowns).

Still, I'd like to see a much darker Starbound overhaul mod in my opinion. Sounds like a good time.

Regardless of the clever spin. Every single creature on earth, every one, evolved to suit their environment. Every one. If they didn't, they've been long extinct. So no matter what color they are, color being a defense mechanism, its still to their advantage as it wards off predators. Either showing toxicity or feigning it. If life exists outside of this planet, it would still conform to basic survival mechanisms, or go extinct. This is a game. But to play your game, go to this thread: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/a-generated-monster-every-friday.8063/ and tell me that a large number of those monsters don't look "off". Not just color palette, but how the parts attach, and what parts attach to what. It seems to me, a system of checks and balances that state: these few tails can only be attached to these few body styles, these heads to these bodies, etc. etc. Would have really gone a long way. Not overly limited, you can still have a HUGE variety of creatures by being selective. One or two Dr. Seuss creatures are fine, when they all start to look that way though... it looks un-thoughtout. And when they animate, oh boy, it looks worse.

Also, limiting the creatures color palette to what colors are present on that planet, would have been much more fantastic. And hey some of these planets have pink, purple, or orange grasses. Red soil. Sky blue trees. None of that negative, at all. So its not a matter of colorfulness. Color is awesome. Make the creatures "fit in" though. And even then, the occasional, rare, extremely vibrant creature isn't a bad thing, they exist. Just make it something that stands out. Not something that's common, or the norm. You don't see anyone complaining how colorful the planets are, or the plants, etc. Just the creatures. Come on. You know they look a little silly. That's the "childishness" everyone is referring to, well the poop monsters too, but those don't bother me AS much.

a long time ago a game touted that it was so big it would take over 24 rl hours to run from one corner to the other (assuming no obstacles). 10 internet points if you know which game! unfortunately even tho it was so huge, the amount of content was quite small. thus lots of empty space. with this game i am worried will there be compelling reasons to travel after that tier planet resources are collected or not. i would like for this game to avoid the boredom associated with endgame terraria.

I played the game just a bit, and yes, life elsewhere would follow some consistency, that's why I mentioned that in my post.

Other life doesn't necessarily need to see as we do. They could just see with infrared for all we know... Or only parts of the color spectrum, and the "off" colors as you put it aren't even noticed by them because maybe they only see two colors, but they're more concerned with heat as their visual cues... You must admit that you are using our one example of life as a bit of a bias for your point.

I don't overall disagree with you, however. Yes, to survive something needs to be consistent, so yes, I do think there should be a stringent rule used somewhere in the creation of monsters for Starbound. My other point was that what small slice of the monster generation that we have seen is a program that they haven't updated alongside their current development of the generator that they do have now(They've been quoted saying this somewhere, but I can't confirm where it is or if it is still true). So, we haven't seen the full context of the situation.

P.S. You definitely skipped and overlooked my biggest points. Thanks for the "over analysis" jab. How nice of you. This convo is over.

You expected a space epic. Your expectations were wrong. You are butthurt over it. If you want a SRS GRIMDARK SYFY ORIGINAL MOVIE EPIC GAME, go play one of the multitude out there. Let starbound be fun and lighthearted. That's what it was going to be from the outset.

What is it that is said about assumptions...

None the less. You quoted me once, now find a quote of me saying I want a ”SRS GRIMDARK SYFY ORIGINAL MOVIE EPIC GAME". You can't. I'm not butt hurt. I was asked for an opinion, I gave one. I was asked to elaborate by several community goers. I've done that.. And had some intelligent conversations with them. They've made their points, I've made mine. Without being ignorant. You have no idea what Starbound was "going to be from the outset" so stop. Neither have I, but I stated that early on. What I did state, and several fellow community members as well, is that the random generated creatures are a little funny. Too off colored for their environments. They animate a little oddly as well. Outside of evolutionary mumbo-jumbo, that's just bad design. I'm not asking for cutting edge realism, fatally serious, or scientifically correct gameplay. Just more thoughtful design. Plain and simple.

Maybe some of these things have changed but from what I remember these are aspects of the game I dislike.

There is no prone position and the effects of crouching are rather insignificant in combat.

But what I am mostly dissapointed about is the cover system in this game, actually the lack of a cover system. Combat will be similar to terraria with high flying bunny jumping rocket boots type combat and levels determine the outcome of a battle much more than skill. Which in my opinion is well boring and less strategic than well built defenses and a cover system.

I also dislike that most weapons do not destroy terrain/buildings to remove cover you might be crouching behind.

The lack of hit boxes. If I shoot someone in the face it wont do more damage then if I shot them in the leg.
