What's inspiring the developers

Tiy has been tweeting a lot about other indie games he's looked at and I think it is important to know the types of things that are inspiring the developers as they create Starbound because they are going to effect how Starbound looks and feels when it is released later this year. (For good or bad)
First Tiy recently tweeted about Stardew Valley. To me, it looks like a 2d SIMS-type game from the video:

I think a lot of the decorative objects seen in the video are pretty similar to Starbound's.
I wonder if they will incorporate something like the changeable wallpapers we see in that video.
Crafting and the inventory system also look pretty similar...
Then there is Wanderlust, released earlier by Chucklefish

Sure it's a top-down view game, but perhaps the small size of the characters influenced the small characters in Starbound. And I bet there are other influences from Wanderlust as well.
Then there is Treasure Adventure Game (TAG) that the developers have surely played and we know liked so much that Chucklefish is now funding the remake of the game as Treasure Adventure World (TAW).
These three examples are too similar to the artistic and creative style of Starbound not to have been influences in the creation of the game. Just how the influences take shape within Starbound is something we will have to wait and see to find out. As well, there are probably more games that I don't know that have influenced the creation of Starbound. In the end, the finished product will be a mash-up of all the influences the developers had in mind as they conceived and then coded Starbound.

Borderlands also inspired the gun generation system. Tiy has played both borderlands.

They get inspired from bashing their heads repeatedly into the keyboard and observing the gibberish that results from it.

Something is telling me that Tiy and his team promoting other indie games, and even helping them out like this, is going to start teaching indie game companies something great:

People are going to learn that trusting one another and working together is going to accomplish a whole lot more in the making of great games. Now I have This sucker to look forward to too, if it ever comes out :p Shame thats a lesson Nintendo seems to have half forgotten nowadays and a lesson EA could use period.

No. In Twilight, they went back and re-wrote the gibberish into the worst thing since Justin Beiber.

Oh, yeah that sounds about right.
Reminds me of the time I fell down the stairs holding a guitar and accidentally wrote the next One Direction song.

And that applies to everything, ever. Amen/Om/Banzai/Whatever.

As for what's inspiring the developers, it's a mixture of 21% Oxygen, 78% Nitrogen, 1% Argon and traces of other gases.
No, wait, that's what the developers are inspiring. It was the other way around.

They inspire me to continue breathing? I guess that too. Their ethics tend to give me faith in humanity in general.

They're the reason I got Wanderlust: Rebirth and TAG in the first place. I really like Wanderlust, but TAG crashes after the first cutscene for me.

Also, you insulted Justin Bieber, Twilight, AND One Direction before ten posts? It's eighth grade all over again (no offence meant, all of those things are better off gone).

Does anyone know of any other cool indie games like these that are available, or a re coming out? I find it hard to find cool stuff.

There was stuff I thought about many years ago now, that at the time, wasn't found in games. If I were to make a game today using those ideas, it would be assumed that it was inspired by already existing games, which would be false! As for Tiy, I obviously can't speak for him on everything, but I know one of their goals is to recapture the charm of older games, hence the art direction of Starbound.

Maybe from playing games in their childhood, and wishing that the games had features that are only found in their imagination. Something along the lines of that.

  15. Tiy's always said how much he loved the 16-bit era, so I can imagine he gets inspiriation from a lot of the older SNES games. He also probably draws inspiration from other indie developers that have had great success, like the developers of Minecraft, Fez, and World of Goo.

Also, the whole "Space with all sorts of possibilities" type of thing made me connect it to Spore.

So I'm not the only one that couldn't play TAG. I'm almost as excited to play T.A.W. as I am Starbound.

Inspiration is a tricky word and system. while i get inspiration from the tears of the Young the devs might get inspiration from something totally different! for example the human respawning animation is from the movie "The Fifth Element" while the avians respawn animation is from an 80's kindergarten project that most everyone when they where being taught about the biology of chickens.

  19. Serris

    Serris Scruffy Nerf-Herder

actually, that's harvest moon, not sims. it uses an 16bit anime style, while starbound is more it's own. the only things in common really are the 16bit and the farming.

published due to demand to support the development of starbound. chucklefish did not make this, only publish.

they're not funding it, they provide the developer with technical knowledge. one of the concept artists is making art for them freelance, which is why it kinda looks like starbound.

all games you have mentioned are not what's inspiring the developers.
what's inspiring the developers are things like metroidvania games, sci-fi like stargate, star wars, planet of the apes,...

Tiy mentioned in one of his AMAs that the art style was inspired by the artist behind sword & sorcery.
