    Pentarctagon Over 9000!!!

Do gas planets even have a surface?

  12. Well what I mean by surface [since gas planets have no surfaces] is the part in between the gassy death area and space :0 hard to explain since i've never been to a gas planet before.

I'll do what I normally do on Terraria and make my home underground. For some reason, I just don't like giant things protruding from the ground.

My world would be large. Larger than Earth, not quite as large as Jupiter. It would not be very dense however, so gravity would be just a touch weaker. It would have a thick atmosphere but due to the lower gravity it would be loosely held around the planet. Occasional breaks in the cloud cover would show the stars and the sunlight. The land mass would be composed mostly of tons of large islands and make up maybe a fourth of the surface area. The oceans would be vast and deep. Volcanic activity would be high all over the planet and clouds of ash would not be uncommon. The steam is what is most important though. Tons of steam vents on the ocean floor and on the land would pump steam into the air and oceans. The inhabitants of the world would use these steam vents to power hundreds of interesting contraptions to make their lives simple. In fact, the water wheel was designed before the rolling wheel on my world. Pipes and machinery can be found everywhere and the skies are filled with Zeppelins. It rains often from all the vapor being spewed into the air and because of the thick clouds in the sky. Insects and flying beasts would be the primarily dominate lifeforms, with plenty of reptiles and amphibians as well. Mammals would be a rarer find than on Earth and dozens of fascinating lifeforms nothing like we have ever seen would be everywhere. Virus like organisms are common and work more like parasites than Earth viruses due to being multicellular and not commonly killing their hosts. This is a hot and steamy world and is definitely not Kansas anymore.

Sorry for Double Post. Unrelated responses.

That is a difficult question to answer but I believe the current main opinion is that they likely have at least a small amount of solid surface deep within the gas. The reason for this thinking is that a solid object nets a much greater amount of gravitational pull than a cloud of gas does and would be more likely to allow the formation of a gas planet than otherwise. So in other words since a gas planet would form much easier with a solid center mass, it is likely that many of them do have one. Just an odds thing.
