The artwork is stunning and pulled me into the site, and then the story and the developer's description of what they actually had planned, which I see is now hidden somewhere else.. perhaps because the goals have changed.

My first impression: "Hey look, a cute little monster! Now why is it running towards me? Oh, battle music, wonder why."

It was more like, "Alright let's do this! What is that cute 400-eyed fellow? Hell-arghisdjfn alkfnasf". Aww, there goes my 10 pixels.

Assuming you mean when I first started testing?
About what I was expecting on a lot missing from the game. Oh that is kinda neat mining more then one. That is a /nice/ couple of changes to building. Oh sh- dead.
Repeat the last part a few times between building basic structures and /hating/ the crafting system.

If you mean when I read about it? My first thought was, This is ambitious but has potential. 15? Okay that is not a bad entry point, lets get ready to test this puppy "soon".
One end of the year later: See above.

Enemies were over-powered, 40+ Threat levels. My head exploded.

After threat levels reduced to 10? My head got better, and I enjoyed my life in Starbound.

After monster lag started? My head re-exploded.

I assume you mean after I purchased into the "beta" and had my first hands on experiences.

    Cool potential, but still under-developed.
Nice tutorial structure, even at this stage.
Performance was better than I anticipated on my system, though still far from where I'd like to see it.
The mining animations weren't to my liking, but that's a minor issue (animation with the pickax ).
Wow, there really isn't any reason to dig into the underground yet. :(
Meteors strikes need some kind of warning.

That was session one in a nutshell.

My first impressions were anger after landing on a planet and immediately being bombarded (and killed) by a meteor shower.

I was so impressed with this game when I first played, I came from Terraria so this was mind-blowingly awesome. I LOVE sci-fi and this is just so amazing. I love the lore and all the species they have come up with also the creature capture too!

'This game is interesting, wow! Its more difficult and unforgiving then diablo 3 hardcore inferno' on perma of course.

I was one of those players who was expecting a glorified Terraria. It's turned out to be so much more than that in most areas but content, but that's understandable.
