ooo very nice, will there also eventually be a dual wield system for 1H weapons and shields?

I agree, I rather enjoy seeing different randomly-generated creatures as I travel from planet to planet (even if they're stitched together from an admittedly limited palette of parts). It does indeed make each planet diverse, especially now that the monsters are colored to more or less match the types of planets/moons they inhabit.

First, let me just say that it's very likely (with how the dev post talks about the new quests) that the current
fetch quests will be replaced or removed, outright.

    That being said..

Right now, this guy is the one that gives you the "ship-class upgrades":

As we can see, he's a pretty shady guy, caring, but shady none the less.
*So why not just have a "price" you have to pay, if you elect not to do the fetch quests?

This could come in the form of Pixels or Minerals (or both).

IE: How would Capt. Jack Sparrow get what he wants, when dealing with shady (space) pirates?

All things considered, you'd also have to think about alternate ways to upgrade your suit.
    *Oxygen, Radiation, Heat, Cold, ect.

If you don't want to do story missions, what could you do to get the upgrades?

*To remove the RNG associated with the fetch quests, you'd have to create an easy to
locate "stationary" NPC like this guy above, to do all your upgrades.

As a sidenote, I recently came across this video, where a guy complains about the
"exploration only" (mining) progression of how starbound use to be.

Granted, it's pretty old and much of what he talks about isn't really an "issue" anymore.

    However!

His core complaint, is that "all you do is mine for Ore and kill bosses that don't drop loot, so
you can mine for more ore, so you can continue to mine for more ore".

This seems to be the primarily issue with "none quest based" progression.

IE: It makes the game boring.

So how would you deal with this?
*What could the devs do, that wouldn't take a great deal of work/time, to cater to the
people that prefer "Exploration only" progression?

    Also @Devs:
With how popular the Avali Race Mode is/was, what are the odds they will be officially
added to 1.0 as a playable race?

Is there any chance of different ship upgrade paths being a feature pre 1.0, if at all? I recall a lot of people askong for the ability to customize the ship layouts.

    @Devs:
Suggestion to add in one more "update" before official launch v1.0.

    Add in a "Crafting" update.
*Revamp monster drops to include eyes/limbs/guts, to be used in crafting
    new food/armor/weapons/ships/hover tech/ect.

IE: Right now, killing mobs is pretty meaningless, baring the occasional "Rare spawn".
*Since they typically only drop money/gimp gear/upgrade modulus/ect.

Absolutely zero. They don't fit Starbound, Their lore in Starbound is drastically underdeveloped. RyuujinZERO said no, Chucklefish said no. Everything that they could possibly have against being officially added to Starbound is basically there.

Won't mind going that far, in fact if I play that update with Frackin' Universe mod, I'd modify that eye into Oculemons, or create a Gatling Eye Cannon! EYE CAN SEE YOUR PAIN!

I just have this idea of actually going into the infinite lava 'core' area of planets to harvest these "World Seeds" at the cost of killing the planet they're on. No more ore generation, the ocean water becomes finite, no trees grow, weather becomes harsher until the planet dies. It'd certainly let planets be more dynamic.

Honestly, dynamic biomes are one of the only changes I'd want to see added to the game that I haven't heard from in a while. Whether it be through some sort of terraforming tool or if the planet "lives" akin to biomes in Terraria that grow every so often. In terms of large-scale terraforming, however, it'd need to either be very fast or very slow depending on the context. For example with the "World Seed" concept, it'd take a while to harvest and therefore take a while to kill the planet whereas terraforming would be a faster change on a smaller scale.

    Well said +1.

The "world seed" mechanics could also open the door to some form of "tower defense" mini-game.
*Where you have to place a "node" (or two) at certain depth locations on the planet (depending on
    the biome itself).

Monsters/Creatures will attempt to kill you, while the timer counts down.

    Something like this:

Though, that's just the general concept.. seems something like this is being worked into Terraria Otherworld.

Holy crap....this pretty much confirms it.....2016 GOTY is a two horse race between Starbound and No Man's Sky with the entire AAA industry left to rethink their ways as they scratch their heads. There's literally nothing else that year that can even hope to be anywhere near as amazing as these two. Although it is a bullet dodged that Fallout 4 is a 2015 game and not in the running for 2016 GOTY as it is certainly awesome enough that it could make it a three horse race if it were in contention.....though it probably wouldn't win at least it has 2015 to itself completely unopposed with the GOTY just there for the taking. I can't wait for the end of next year when half the GOTY awards all go to Starbound and all the major AAA publishers are bewildered at how they failed!! Talk of Terraria and Other World is comical, good entertainment, but nothing else.

While Starbound is indeed neat, it's definitely not GoTY material, especially compared to No Mans' Sky.

For those that don't know what NMS is:

Other Notable Games Coming out next year:
    • The Division
    • Uncharted 4
    • Final Fantasy XV
    • Dead Island 2
    • Mirror's Edge Catalyst
    • Doom
    • Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
    • XCOM 2
    • Cuphead
    • Dragon Quest Builders
    • Persona 5
    ect.

Again, Starbound is a neat concept, but in terms of content/replayability/ect. It isn't even in the same ball park
as many of the AAA games you're comparing it to.

Starbound has a lot more content and replayability than every one of the games you listed......those have nothing....they are either one and done without a notably lengthy campaign or anything or multiplayer grinds for those easily entertained by looking at the same five maps forever but otherwise extremely depraved of content. Oh and their mod support is from nonexistent to minimal too so their longevity is about zero too. With Starbound we already have some insanely huge mods adding A LOT of content to the game....calling Frackin Universe an expansion is a huge understatement for example. Saying this game lacks content or replayability is just simply false.....you can literally explore forever and never run out of new things to discover and if you feel like you need more spice mods will sustain this pretty much forever.

What do you do, after you've beaten all the main quests and gotten the "best gear"?

    1. You start building a base.
    2. You continue to explore redundant worlds.
    3. Download mods.

You have to keep in mind, that Starbound is a niche game and that No Man's Sky is simply a
bigger, better and more engaging version (starbound doesn't even have space combat).

IE: No Man's Sky will overshadow Starbound, thus you're likely to see meme's to the tune of "Starbound is the poor man's sky".

This isn't even considering the massive fan following of Uncharted, Doom, Deus Ex, Final Fantasy, ect.
*Or even the upcoming Terraria "unofficial squeals" next year.

    tl;dr
I doubt Starbound will even be on the list of nominees for GotY 2016. Not because it's a "bad game" but
because it simply isn't anything truly "unique" or special, compared to it's competition.

    #FoodForThought.

    ~

EDIT: Observation about GotY bias of gaming sites that are "fanboys".

I'm surprised you're operating on the assumption that GotY awards aren't bias.

Case and point: Gone Home won Game of the Year (2013) from Kotaku, Polygon and IGN.

    Its competition?

Army of Two, Asphalt, Assassin's Creed, Batman: Arkham, Battlefield, BioShock, Call of Duty, Crysis, Dead Island, Dead Rising, Dead Space, Devil May Cry, Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem, Forza Motorsport, God of War, Gears of War, Gran Turismo, Grand Theft Auto, Killer Instinct, Killzone, Lost Planet, Mario Party, Metro, Need for Speed, Pokémon, Rayman, Saints Row, Shantae, SimCity, Sly Cooper, Sonic The Hedgehog, StarCraft, Super Mario, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, Tomb Raider, Total War and Zoo Tycoon.

In addition, it saw the release of many new intellectual properties, such as Beyond: Two Souls, Papers, Please, Tearaway, The Wonderful 101 and The Last of Us. Many awards went to games such as BioShock Infinite, Grand Theft Auto V, The Last of Us and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

Can you honestly say that Gone Home, a game you can beat in under and hour, that has ZERO replay-ability should've beaten out ALL the games above?

Kotaku, Polygon and IGN all gave Gome Home GotY, because its a story of accepting a member of your family as a lesbian.

IE: Progressive Mindset > Merit of actual game/mechanics.

Realistically speaking, Starbound, No Mans Sky and all of the other awesome games I listed before, as
competition for 2016.. ALL of them could lose out to a "progressive" game, if it somehow paints women
as victims, fighting back against the patriachry or has a story revolving around a transgender person.

    Sad isn't it?
