what the heck is tha-OHGAWD!!*BOOM!*

Nothing to fancy with this post just sort of a humorous situation to chuckle at ^^


so i started off on a new character recently, just to play as one of a different species. i pick a hyolotl character (spelling?) and venture out on my first planet...

High adventure ensues as i spawn right next to one of those mini boss monsters soon as i touch down. fortunately with some quick evasion and even faster thinking i evade it long enough to set up a murder hole and take it out scoring me a decent weapon right off

so i carry on my journey collecting and mining ore and resources... I'm also talking to a friend over skype as i'm doing this. and a il while previous he had shown me a meteor shower on his world. falling rocks about the size of a character that insta-kill you... this is context for what happened...

so i am mining a patch of iron, when i get my OWN meteor strike. Mine however was NOWHERE NEAR AS FRIENDLY AS HIS.

Mine consisted of 3 GIANT ASTEROIDS falling down RIGHT ON TOP OF WHERE I WAS STANDING!

I've only just started, i don't even have ARMOR yet... needless to say i wasn't just dead, I was VAPORIZED

sometimes... the god of gaming just has it in for ya

But seriously, either I am lucky or I have a charm of Asteroid Avoidance in my pocket, never see em. (Don't look though)

 

Wow! I've seen meteors before. I've been killed by meteors before. But I've never seen ANYTHING that caused as much devastation as what is seen in your screenshot. Amazing!

 

True. I have visited a planet which had a perfectly formed surface and large Avian villages, completely untouched by meteors until I arrived. Then the meteors started falling and completely destroyed the Avian town. I realize the game mechanic doesn't ever instantiate weather on a planet you've not visited, but for the sake of "realism" it would probably make sense to make sure that planets with meteor weather don't have surface building types that can't withstand them. In other words, make the generation algorithm check for weather type and build appropriate surface structures. People who choose to live in such harsh environments would obviously build their structures to withstand them.

I'm pretty tired, so I hope this made sense

 

I found some of the smaller meteor showers on a world I had been exploring on in a private server and brought my friend to the planet to show him the craters and hopefully see one in action. After half an hour of trouncing about with no meteor sightings to speak of, night began to fall and we set up camp. Refill the hunger bar with some steaks, rest in the tents, show off all of the new music we have been picking up recently. Of course, that's when the meteor showers decided to show up. Right in the middle of our rousing rendition of Megalovania.

That said, I still love them.

 

One of my first characters had two huge meteors fall next to him in roughly back-to-back days. The first one I wasn't even paying attention to the screen and just heard the explosion. If it weren't for the next one I never would have figured out what had happened.

On the other hand, I've not yet come across a meteor "crater" without witnessing the meteor strike - so part of me wonders if they only spawn near players like oobleck suggests.

 

Its funniest when you first started the game and the first planet you ever play on has meteors lol

Well, that is certainly one tough tree...

 

I had to learn the hard way about meteor showers.... I spent 2.5 hours dismantling a USMC base, then another 2.5 hours building another base at spawn with my ill gotten gains. I had just finished my pseudo hydroponics greenhouse and wired all the doors to pressure plates when I experienced my first meteor shower.
That day, I just turned off star bound and did other things.

 

I think it would be helpful if your star map could tell you what kind of weather the planet can experience as well as the biome and threat level.

I have a funny story, but it isn't about a meteor. When I discovered that a) there is a wizard hat and b) you can buy said wizard had from a wizard vendor, I went online and found coords to a wizard vendor. I filled my ship and flew there immediately. I touched down right next to the wizard vendors house!!! What luck! Right? So the wizard hat was 750 pixels. I had enough for one hat, but I have 2 kids, who happened to be hovering about me saying "Buy me one too mommy!" So, I went off exploring the surface of the planet in search of more pixels. About 10 mins later or so, I had enough pixels for 3 wizard hats! Yay! I warped up to my ship and back down next to the wizard's house. I went in. No wizard. Humm. I noticed the door on the other side of the house was open. The wizard had wandered outside and gotten killed while I was getting pixels :/

 

I've only seen an meteor shower once and have never seen a HUGE asteroid impact, I didn't die during the meteor shower I was just running around enjoying the destruction.

 

On the bright side, since you had just started...you didn't have any pixels to lose =P


I've had the small meteorites that replace your head (killing you, unsurprisingly), but I've only seen the result of a giant meteor, once. I left that planet really quick.
