What society/empire will you develop?

During the day, Florans are very powerful-- producing extra energy for shields, weapons, and the like, while at night they're normal. So I presume that there will be lots of night-time raids, to the point of predictability, allowing clever Floran strategists to win through tricking the night-time raids in to doing exactly what they want.

The Democratic Republic of SaM will be erected by me, Starr Anthony Moone, and I will be king of it all, and all the penguins will bow before me!

Ideally, my society will have two sides. A roaming, nomadic, space faring side, and a sheltered, scientifically leaning side. I say sheltered because it will not have any relations with other planets, since this potentially leads to conflicts. Due to its isolated place within the universe, the scientific side will be able to discover scientific advances at an unprecedented rate. The space faring side will support, defend, and acquire knowledge for the scientific side. The two sides together form a perfect harmony, the science side will continually produce better and better equipment for the space faring side to do their job, and the space faring side will provide the means for the science side to be able to supply them with said equipment. Due to my society's incomparable scientific achievements, I will be the most successful civilization in the universe. If I am still generally in charge by the time my society achieves god-hood, we will become the caretakers of the universe. Free space tech for everyone!

 

How would you create a "society"? Roaming NPCs aren't much of a society if you ask me.

 

Construction is an element that contributes to this. You may build things pretty much however you please, so people can have medieval looking castles to futuristic underwater bases. That will already set a tone of the type of society that you're after.

The most evident element, however, is whatever the player chooses to do. Should you choose to focus on being a warrior, merchant, researcher, thief, a mix of some, a mix of all, or even something else, that will all contribute to define whatever you choose to set up, as the outcome will revolve around your actions.

The NPCs aren't merely roaming. According to official sources, they will have needs and will offer services, and you may populate your settlements with NPCs as you please, being even possible to evict them. That seems to contribute to a slightly more multi-sided society than the Terraria style, as apparently you are able to choose if you'd like an NPC to be a part of your group or not, thus shaping it in regards to how you see fit. It can be assumed, then, that people will select NPCs that fall into a category that they're glad with. For instance, if a person chooses to create a Floran nation that seeks to destroy all Avian temples, perhaps that individual won't be glad with an Avian in his/her presence.

As I state in the OP, we're also assuming that it is possible to distribute tasks across the NPCs, so that they may have professions, in a way. Moreover, if we are able to customise them, that will also be one step in the right direction.

Finally, there's a hint of roleplaying involved, which pretty much ties all the knots.
