What society/empire will you develop?

Discussion in 'Starbound Discussion' started by Keeper, Mar 2, 2013.

  1. Hello there, spadies and spobos.

There are a few threads out there where you may talk about what type of character you will be or even what the first actions you will take once you start the game are. This topic here has a wider view in range and kinda aims to see things in the long run. As we know, people will be able to build settlements across numerous star systems and populate them with friendly NPCs. We may construct as much as we please and pretty much how we please, thus giving our own "flair" to the communities we establish. Our actions will also dictate what kind of society we're bringing forth, but such is not restricted to our characters alone. Let's also assume that we may distribute tasks across our NPCs.

    So, basically:

What type of society/empire are you going to develop in Starbound?

Are you going to create a large research-driven empire, establishing laboratories in places of interest and focus on gathering as much intel about plants and animals as you can? Or will you be a religious soul and expand the glory of Kluex by setting shrines of worship across the universe? Perhaps you're into throwing your NPCs into giant arenas and forcing them to fight against gargantuan space monsters while you sell tickets to "strange" individuals and run a betting house? Or is your community going to be a mix of different styles? Let us know!

Edit: To users who don't really understand how such thing may be developed in Starbound:

I have an interest in Roman culture and military. I think it's all pretty cool. :rainbow: With that, I'd like to expand my empire across the stars, conquering those who oppose me and welcoming into the empire those who do not. I'll reinforce villages with mighty walls, spread knowledge, build statues and establish trade routes. If possible, I'll make other communities who I protect pay tribute to my realm. ^^ I'm also planning on building structures that will aid my cause, but in Roman style, such as aqueducts, towers, etc. If I can, I'll also prepare a bunch of legionaries who will enforce my command. And if it's possible to give NPCs different gear/equipment and tasks, I'll probably split them into different squad types, but with a sci-fi twist to it. :) For Great Glory! :viking:

I'm gonna be a Floran and make a peaceful research station, cause I'm tired of people comparing them to the Zerg. Also cause Florans are awesome.

    It's fun to speculate.
I suppose Starbound will be full of choices about whether to exploit or create on different planets.
Being a generally peaceful person, I will probably have a technological society focused on knowledge creation and exploration.

I was going to construct a scientific citadel, but the Avian lore convinced me that Florans are evil, and must be wiped out!

I shall start a "Cool Kluex Clan" intended on worshippping the glories of Kluex and his non-floran ways. We shall also don out traditional white robes and hood that symbolizes purity, and march into the floran's neighborhoods, and hang them on trees an-

wait. On second thought, I'm not going to do any of that.

I plan on (attempting) to make a communist government in my game who's main goal will be to expand colonies onto as many planets as possible; how we obtain these colonies will be based on individual situation which may change for varying planets. I may have to form some kind of peace treaty with some planet explaining how we wont attack them or even help them if they assimilate into our government, I may go to war with a planet and force them to conform to us, they may even just join us freely as they agree with our system; the possibilities are endless as to how that may work out. (They will also probably change drastically depending on game mechanics) Now you may say what would be the point of doing all of this? Well for one this is a game and does there really need to be a point? Well quite simply this is what seems fun to me and honestly I would enjoy to test the limits to see if I can form a communist government within it. But if you want to get into some more detail on it and a more RP situation, you could say that the point of all of this is to form a strong empire that when looked at wouldn't be dared challenged; we are a system that's aim is to reach galactic control and no planet would dare to stop us. (Obvs gonna leave some planets to themselves so it's not just our system in the universe.)

An idealistic society based on reason, with values such as scientific progress, industrial growth, peaceful exploration, egalitarian in principle and meritocratic in appliance. Possibly under a red flag with golden star, sickle and hammer, will mod it in if necessary. Working name is just the "Union".

Architecture will be more practical than lavish, but far from spartan. Houses and rooms will be moderate large, with plenty of space for amenities and ease of navigation. Nature will be respected and implemented into the designs of settlements, with grass and trees everywhere, right beside glass and steel. There will be a lot of lights everywhere, and a great mass transit system. Although this is not the safest galaxy ever, and safety of the people is of paramount importance, so military defensive structures will be a relatively common sight, especially on the outskirts. Union is peaceful, but ready to everything.

In foreign relations, Union will be extremely benevolent to most, but very strict and even outright hostile to so-called "evil empires", which are trying to oppress their and/or other people, discriminating and exploiting without fairness or justice. Although we will never declare war on sight, because this is the worst way to solve disagreements, used only as last resort, when no other options are available. On the other hand, each and every civilization are welcome to join our society by their own will, if they'll be wise enough.

Politically, state itself will be comprised of three layers.
    — Central, "Core" state part will be more uniform than other layers, being the cultural, philosophical, ethical and political centre of the state as a whole. All basic principles of our society are held in highest value here, and the life is good. Basically, this is the Homeworld, but probably not only it.
    — Middle, "Union" state part will be close to the ideal of Core, but will differ in some ways. For example, affiliated Avians may not want to discard their religious beliefs to "hobby" level, as it is accustomed in Core. They are welcome in Union, where they can spend their own resources on building impressive (and useless to non-believers, and probably even to believers, but it's a long story) temples to Kluex, sharing other values with Core.
    — Outer, "Manifold" is not exactly a state part. This is the place to go for affiliated sovereign states, which are not yet ready to discard majority of their beliefs and practices and to adopt the lifestyle of our society. For example, some savage Florans may try to adapt themselves to galactic customs, but Florans be Florans — it is hard both for them and others to co-exist in full harmony, so they will retain their state sovereignity with defined borders and local laws. Of course, these laws should be compatible to idealistic views of our society.

Manifold itself is divided to two sublayers.
    — "Manifold Federation" is an affiliated territory of the Union. Union shares many of its' resources with Federation, but laws and customs of Federal states should be close enough to Union ideals. More than that, Federal states are already shedding some of their sovereignity, theoretically preparing to join the Union itself.
    — "Manifold Confederation" is an outskirts of the Union. Virtually every society can apply to join Confederation, getting protection of Union and still retaining almost all of its' sovereignity. Confederate state is unable to declare a war by itself without being automatically expelled from Manifold, and that's about it. Of course, it is expected that Confederate states will open their territories to Union needs, such as mining or military outposts, serving as centres of industrial development and protection. Union, on the other hand, provides Confederate state with the best educational facilities and other fruits of reason, which usually slowly and peacefully converts Confederate state to Federal and, later, to part of the Union itself.

I'll create an dictator apex empire, where everything is monitored by the All Seeing Ones. There shall be no resistance, all species shall bow down in fear. Anyone who shows resistance will be tortured and left to die on an asteroid. Nothing goes past the Empire unnoticed...

Haven't really thought about it. If I could make an empire, it'd probably be based heavily on commerce, industry and science. I'd also probably give it a culture based upon corporations and consumerism, and probably quite diplomatic and open to other species.
