What should Starbound really be about?

Man, where's the "Peace Treaty" option in Call of Duty, all this killing is too linear!

Sorry, Haven't had my first smoke so I'm a dumbass.

Not Terraria, not Minecraft either. The only thing that Starbound is sharing with Terraria and Minecraft is freedom, that freedom who allows the player to do whatever he want it, mine, build, fight, explore, etc

Minecraft and Terraria was awesome games, but they´re also drink inspiration on other games, and each other. Also I don´t feel l uncomfortable mining (no bloody way) I love it actually.

So yeah, don´t worry mate, will be an amazing storyline and I really hope the game please all of us who love mine & build, and all of people like you who prefer explore and kill, after all, it´s all about freedom.

Herpes shmerpes, have you had space crabs? On a furry body those suckers can develop their own primitive civilization. That leads to many embarrassing problems, the least of which is having to get other people to change their one-liners like:

"Is that a religious monument in your pants or are you just happy to see me?"

Starbound should be a Sattire of Reality

What the game is is not necessarily what the devs intend it to be. The whole point of this thread is that what's intended to be a space exploration game feels too much like Terraria 2.0.

To remove the focus on mining (for some reason people think there is no mining in a sci-fi ambient, but hell there is; only on a bigass scale, with a ultragiga drill piercing the whole planet for ore) Chucklefish could implement Mining Colonies on some planets. They could sell either ores or ingots according to the threat level on the planet they are, that could shift the scales a bit.

However, the main way to get Pixels still involves mining. They should have "Matter Decompressor" or something around that, that lets you take any item and turn it to pixels. Like the Refinery, but not limited to Ores/Bars.

I don't know what they have planned, but what I'm hoping for is something akin to Star Trek. Where the game is a series of episodic adventures. Things like interacting with the natives or saving a planet from destruction kind of stuff... and of course, boldly going where no Apex has gone before.

Construction is kind of the thing to do between "episodes." The construction of a base has some appeal, but it'll be hard for the game to make such a thing valuable.

    This i can understand.

I think people have really ambitious hopes for this game that goes beyond its scope.

    I think you meant "dull."

Back on topic, I think the majority of people who share this opinion are really looking for another type of game entirely. Starbound is about exploration, and will get to be more and more so as new updates are released. It's also about building, crafting, and creativity. I'm not big on the building and creativity parts, but I love the crafting. That's one of the main things that drew me to Terraria and, subsequently, Starbound.

Also, the idea of calling a game a "clone" is a bit myopic. The two games are very similar, yes. That's because they are in the same genre of "Sandbox Crafting Adventure" or whatever you want to call it. Minecraft, Terraria, Starbound, and other games like Edge of Space and dozens more are among the first, but they won't be the last. Terraria was said to be "2D Minecraft," which it is in a lot of ways. Starbound is said to be "Terraria in Space," which it is in a lot of ways. The fact that there are only a few games in the genre thus far doesn't mean any of them are a clone of another one. They've all done plenty to differentiate themselves, and new mechanics will be introduced as more games are released.

TL;DR Quit using the word clone. Clones are identical, not similar.

i think when someone says "clone" its not meant as an insult to SB, but rather a quick way to describe what kind of gameplay to expect. Befor "First person shooter" became common vernacular, they were called "Doom clones". To call this a terraria clone is to say its a 2d game where a major element in digging, mining and finding loot (despite what many posters want to believe). SB hasnt strayed far enough away from that formula to be designated as anything else. Unitl there is a common accepted term, games of this type will all be known as "Terraria clones"

I would use clone as a way to insult a game, Like the Killzone of Duty game.

I meant what I said. Dryly amusing is precisely how I would describe spending most of your time in a space exploration game digging for metal underground.

Starbound should be about three friends going on a road trip before they head off to college. Sort of a last goodbye to their high school years.
