What's with the sudden interest in director mode?

It's not planned to be implemented until post-release, as in, not with the beta coming out next week.

It's just a fun thing to think about. Lots of possibilities!

  4. Shadowbolt

    Shadowbolt Big Damn Hero

a giant Player vs director controlled NPC war lasting until one side takes over the opposing sides HQ

    I am not that creative.

I will start off only trolling my wife and also my buddy. I will make an epic quest that is pretty much a rip off of Earthbound. Evil force named something I get from the Google translator, has sent his forces to the small town of "insert name with one in it" and its up to you to stop him...

that will turn into :viking: KILL ALL THE PLAYERS! :lolwut: with some really over powered mobs or just a lot of really annoying easy mobs with a form of CC.

  6. What i hope is the Director Mode to be able to create challenge worlds (like it happens with terraria) that can work with workshop to download and play, they could be stories, challenge maps, etc.. etc.. The way it's all planetish seems to be impossible to do, but i would like to play user-created stuff, locked to their tools, rules, etc...

"Generic Quest" and I already have a sequel planned, Generic Quest! 2: Something Something Time travel. Oh and don't forget the Go Kill 20 More Pigs addon.

Quests that set the PC as a One Man/Woman Army! :sparta:

No Fed-Ex Quests. NPCs can handle stupid mundane stuff like that. :p

It sounds interesting hence the 'interest' ;)

@PurpleSquirel43 - I would love to have a series of bounty hunter quests that lead up to a special twist!

The quest giver is your brother and he had you kill off all your secret siblings so that he can take the family inheritance all for himself after he kills you!

I only said that because we've known about it for like 6 months now, and earlier there were 3 threads about it all in a row on the front page.

I was wondering if the devs had said anything more about it or if they changed their minds about it being post-release, but since I couldn't find anything I was left wondering why the interest kicked back up now of all times, and if it was because people thought it was going to be a beta feature.

After that though, I just chalked it up to the first director mode thread bringing it back to the forefront of the other 2 guys' minds.

  11. I'm sure I'll be making a few quests involving a cast of characters that will pull at your heart strings and have plenty of twists and turns. :)

I've been playing La-Mulana lately, which is a very good indie Metroidvania platformer in the vein of oldschool NES Castlevania and apparently old Japanese MSX games, and I can't help thinking that Starbound with premade maps + director mode would make for a great place to make an interactive La Mulana. Put your friends through a labyrinth of exploration, traps and dangerous enemies, and drop hints as well as dynamically alter the situation to keep things interesting. Hrrmmm... You could even take things a step further with modding to create physics puzzles and implement old school jumping physics.

Everything comes in cycles. It could definitely have been because people though it was in the beta.
It is definitely an interesting feature though. I look forward to giving it a try when it is patched into the full release.

Not really a quest, but I think it would be awesome to be able to take the role of some random NPC and give your players the opportunity to have a REAL conversation with an NPC for once. Picture this: a player decides to have a seat on the dock next to some random old man to do some fishing. The next thing he knows, the player is knee deep in a conversation about fish and "the one that got away". Then the old man wanders off, leaving the player with his lucky fishing lure. Definitely better than hearing NPCs spout some cookie cutter phrase about the weather or something.

Since there's a lot of environmental hazards to make use of (eg. electric traps, spikes, poisonous water, lava) and with the addition of doors that are wired not being able to be unlocked unless the right lever/object is used, there's much more depth to be had in making puzzles/jumping quests/dungeons for people to go through, especially if you limit their lighting and only allow the flashlight.
