What is everyone's opinion on combat?

    I heard of the game back in April 2012, yet I tried not to follow it too closely since that would kill me. :D
    A friend told me that it's coming out early 2013 so I decided to read up.

    First of all, this community is amazing! Useful threads everywhere, I read most of the info available here in a matter of 5~ hours. I am in love with this game, terraria hit most of my buttons, and this is far deeper than terraria.

    However I do have 2 concerns.
    The combat in some videos that I saw was...quite boring. 2 videos from the end of November showed random mobs just running like maniacs, then get one shot, Tiy was probably using high level gear, but the behaviour of the enemy was....yeah. I also watched a stream yesterday that was testing the 4 legged mobs, again I was..unimpressed, they ran to him, used an attack animation (I liked that), then exploded into pieces.

    Did anyone of you see any better videos of combat? I did read a tweet that this game's combat is like Castlevania symphony of the night, which was a really fun combat system. Yet so far the things I saw make me feel like they focused too much on the exploration/building but not enough on the combat system. I do realize that most of the footage was WIP , but the game is in the late stages of it's development, so I hope I'm wrong.

    Second concern is not really an important one, but seeing that last screenshot of the ocean, I really hope it's possible to build housing underwater! :D

I also feel that combat is a bit awkward at the moment (enemies spawning just off-screen even though the player was there a few seconds ago and there were no creatures - and then rushing to the character, forcing him/her to jump and shoot them from above), but I believe it'll be improved, so not much worries from my side. :p Regarding death animations/explosions, I remember one of the staff saying at some point that it was just the way it worked at that time and would get polished.

    Yeah the monsters in that video weren't using the better AI systems they have.
    I haven't seen any videos where the AI was fully enabled.

    Great. I do indeed hope they improve the death animations, first killed creature I saw I panicked! :rofl:

    Hopefully they will show us some pure gameplay videos soon. Then my worries can be put to rest.

    Tiy wrote in the text chat about the different A.I's types that they have created, but not using atm. And about the exploding death animations, witch are temporary WIP. =)
    The thing that worries me more is that it apears to be only two types of enemies in eatch world. But again, probably WIP.

    But i have the feeling that chucklefish is a serious developer, and will not release the game before they are content with every aspect of the game. :DD

    Me and my luck. I was watching the last stream yesterday at 3am~ but I stopped after the space marine set. And RIGHT after that he mentioned the AI+death animations.

    Glad to hear I was wrong! Ragdoll deaths are something I really look forward to now.

    EDIT: Might I ask about the different A.I's that you mentioned Ivar? I can't find that info. I did read that charge is not the only one, but was there anything more specific?

    EDIT2: Nevermind I finished the video, pouncing raptors?! Flying harpies that throw projectiles at you? :D awesome. If everything is truly randomly generated then this game is going to have an enormous amount of replayability.

    Kirasin: If you pause the latest livestream at 34:37 you can read in the text chat:

    " As i say i only have charging enabled right now
    but there are many many AI types
    that can be mixed and matched
    projectiles, pouncing, all kinds of patterns and so on. "

    That's all the info i found in the livestream :p But if it's "many many" diferent basic AI behaviors and you can mix them together on top of that, it have to be alot (i hope =P)

    Wat.That's just users speculation.
    So from what we can see from yesterday's stream combat is still WIP.Do you think they'll release it without combat? "It's 24th fabruary,we must release the game today,cut on the combat so we can get in time"...?

    After reading the info here, combat does sound finished, they are probably just testing it now. They are probably just polishing things now/fixing some bugs and getting ready for release.

    the combat system they said to have when starbound is finished is like 1 of the 100 only reasons i'm going to play this.

    some other reasons are:

    -mechs
    -the watersystem
    -space
    -slaves pets
    -penguins

    Tiy and company actually just said 2013.

    Praying we don't have to wait another six months or so for it, pretty sure that will crush me.

    As for the combat, I don't need much, just give me a giant spear and I'm good to go. :)

    I think at this point Tiy would have quite a bit of trouble publishing the game in 2012... probably.
    Yeah the combat system also concerned me too and I'm hoping they polish it up.

    :confused: I am not really sure about the current hit detection system. I hope this will be improved some time!

    It's a work in progress. It isn't finished yet; they're still doing a lot of work on combat.

    the videos you saw were old and out dated while combat is still a work in progress its gotten better and will continue to get better the team refuses to release a product they feel is not to satisfaction standards and they have high standards

    Do you have the ability to swing in all 8 directions?

    Based on the latest stream, it looks like the way your swing your weapon depends on the weapon itself. Also, there won't be any swinging the whole weapon around in a complete circle. You'll have to think about the way your weapon works when you fight.
