what if you could mod only one thing ?

lets say you just got the game, and you're allowed to mod ONE thing and one thing only.

i would mod the soundtrack. im sure starbound's soundtrack will be awesome but i have so much more favorites from other games that would fit.

im talking about the paper mario (N64) soundtrack. they cover a lot of base, it would be one song for each type of planet with the boss song for combat.

an example would be the dry dry desert theme for desertic planet with thutankoopa's theme for fights with monsters.

considering how much i liked paper mario and its soundtrack, to do this would be a big deal for me :p

I would install a mod that introduces the goldfishes from Terraia. However, the goldfishes would prove to be tolerant to a variety of salinity, dissolved oxygen and temperature levels in the waters, and would soon occupy and out-compete the native species within the lake. This is a problem, so I would then install a mod that introduces piranhas from Terraria that mainly predates on goldfishes from the same planet. Now, at this point, some of the more astute forum-dwellers would argue that Terraria piranhas don't generally predate on Terraria Goldfishes; and they'd be right. The terraria piranhas shares a similar egg-laying environment as some of the native fishes on my homeplanet, so, not only will they predate on my native species, they would destroy their eggs to make place for their own. Unfortunately, installing the Terraria piranhas mod also installed yet another feature into the game; the massive amounts of waste coming out of the piranhas would introduce a copious amount of nitrate and orthophosphate into the water (all animal waste generally contains a lot of them; they are what makes fertilizers work) which would cause a massive bloom of native algaes. This would not present a problem until summer comes, and the huge number of algae out-strips all of the orthophosphate and nitrate in the water. This would cause them to die out and decompose. However, the micro-organisms responsible for the decomposition process uses up a great amount of oxygen, which would mean as the algaes begins to die out, there will be heck a lot less total dissolved oxygen in the water. This ultimately causes my native fish species to rapidly die out due to lack of oxygen (most fishes relies on oxygen in the water in order to breathe; they cannot afford to surface every now and then just to get some air; if you see your goldfishes do that, then you have the reason why they die so quickly). After much research, I will now opt to install a mangrove mod in order to introduce trees to my homeworld in hopes of planting them in water and injecting oxygen back in the water again. However, I would have failed to realize that mangrove trees, while being pretty good at photosynthesis and oxygen production, are very bad at releasing oxygen from their roots. Also, due to the amount of algae dying out in the water, the soil right under the lakes of my homeworld has become anoxic, which means it has no oxygen in the dirt itself. This would prove to be a problem to vascular plants since roots would rot in soils that are anoxic. While mangroves can technically grow in this kind of conditions, I need to opt for a better plant that would not only provide oxygen to the water, but also supply oxygen to its own roots, so that it won't rot away. After much thought, I would, at this point, opt to install the "emergent vegetation" mod.

The "emergent vegetation" mod would come with Coastal Bulrushes, Olney's Bulrushes, California Bulrushes as well as the broad leaved cattails. They are basically columns of photosynthesis that contains a arenchyma tissue which would transport oxygen to its roots to prevent root rots. When properly employed, this mod can also strip away the excess nitrate and orthophosphate level in the water, thereby clearing away the algae invasion at the same time, while providing a nice home for some of the wetland species I may later introduce at my leisure. However, in order for the emergent vegetation to remove a significant chunk nitrate and orthophosphate in the water systems, I need to cover about 50% of the water with this stuff. And so, in my regret, I would fill the lakes to the brim with bulrushes and cattails alike. However, I've only managed to stop the algae infestation, while the goldfish and the piranhas are still sharply reducing the number of native fishes on my homeworld. Over 200 species of Cichlid fishes have been annihilated by the nile perch introduced to lake Victoria Er, I mean, most of my native fish species on my homeowrld had been driven to extincting by the mods that I have installed. To salvage what's left of this situation, I would opt to install the "fish hatchery" mod, which allows me to catch and raise fishes in private hatcheries, and release some of them to the wild on an annual basis. Although the creator of this mod has heralded it as the "savior of fish species", the mod would prove to be less than a miracle, since the fishes raised in the hatchery would not have any survival experiences before forcibly thrusted back into the wild. But at this point, the piranhas would have eaten most of the native species left in the wild; if I can delay the release of the fishes in my hatcheries, I can sit back and watch as the piranhas wipe out the remaining native fishes left in the wild, then turning its fangs toward the goldfishes, then ultimately starve to death. The massive amounts of dead piranhas would only add to the thick layers of anoxic dirt underlying the lake, but at this point, I would celebrate the little amounts of fishes I've saved, and call it a happy gilmore.

But that's not the end of it. While waiting for the whole "piranha eat all the goldfish and die out" scenario to occur, NPCs would move into close to the waters out of admiration for the goldfishes that are still in abundance. They would build houses and commercial buildings next to the lake, and inevitably, try to drain the lakes in order to expand their buildings in the near future. This would prove to be detrimental to the entire ecosystem on the entire planet, which will force me to install the "compensatory mitigation" mod, which forces NPCs to construct 3 man-made lakes in exchange for every lake that they destroys. However, this mod also requires me to install the "plea to congress" mod, which requires me to install the "public petition" mod, which requires me to install the "environmental awareness campaign" mod. Installing the "compensatory mitigation" mod will be a great pain, but I sincerely hope it would be worth the effort.

Unfortunately, the "compensatory mitigation" mod wouldn't work out as I had hoped. NPCs generally have imperfect AIs, which meant that the lakes that they built would not work out as well as the natural lakes spawned during world generation; most of the lakes would lack the vegetation in the lake that gives the lake ample oxygen and food; without vegetation on the side, the dirt blocks around the water would be eroded away, causing a shoreline that's constantly eroding. Without plants to shade the lake, waters within the lake would get hot when the sun is up, and cold when the sun is down; the fluctuation in temperature would make the lake hostile to life. Obviously, these artificial lakes would prove to be un-ideal toward animal life, which would prove to be counter-intuitive.

So you know what? I'm not going to install any of these mods; the game might be better without human interventions in the first place. so no, no more goldfishes, no more piranhas, and no more "patch" solutions that create more problems while trying to fix an older problem. Starbound might just be better if left alone; mods might sound good in theory, but on practice, it is a whole other beast.

    Mod only one thing? One...

    Only one. D:

I'd mod the ability to install more mods.
If you could install only one mod package at once there would definitely be something that would pack multiple mod packages into one as long as they didn't conflict.

In all seriousness, I'd probably mod the character customization options so I could have all my OCs. Although it would be more fun to mess with planet generation and the like. I find that the most fun when I have like 2,000 mods putting in different textures, items, logistics systems and tamable animals causing my game to work only half the time because of all the conflicts! :rainbow:

I would mod my dropship to look like the Millenium falcon.
I want to smuggle space hobos across space borders.

  5. I'd mod the playable races to add some of my favorite video game characters. After that I would use them in Director Mode to roleplay with my friends. Why? Because it's my decision, that's why.:V

It was either that or add texture packs from other games. If other developers notice that their texture packs have been used in this game and they request it to be removed, don't tell on meeeeeeeee.:ninja:

My mod would be similar, in that I would be able to have costumes that mimic characters from other games. Perhaps a catalogue of 10,000 different video-game characters, all made as sprites. Is that too much for a squid to ask? :V

Ah, This has sparked an idea!
I would mod a playable race into the game, A Changeling.
It can morph into any other race. (And possible get its traits as well. [If there are any.])

Regardless if some people don't like it, I would mod in a survival mode.

Not like "Endless enemies are coming" survival.

But like "Hunger, thirst, sleep, decreased chance of ammo/weapons, harder enemies, perma-death for you and NPCs." I'm a glutton for punishment, so it'd be awesome for me to just start a game and see how far I can get while braving all the elements.

if only more games these days had a "survival" factor in them, hopefully when the game is released and modding is available: i want to make a hunger meter and thirst meter, with sleep effecting the player and such

    but i don't like the perma-death thing d:
