I don't think Tiy has a fireplace but I may be wrong. But if he does, property damage is illegal.

This thing is going to explode on Steam.

[edit] Having actually read the OP, I stand by what I said. The Steam community isn't going to care about when or how, they'll buy the title when it's available.

Hehehe, just gotta hope it's not bad. It certainly doesn't look like it from here.

And to restate what a couple have pointed out, Tiy has said in the FAQ and personally in the forums that 2013 release is definite. It might just be the beta, but I think a lot of people would be happy with that.

There is a chance that any game can turn out less-than-awesome, not as good as expected, merely okay, buggy, or just plain bad. This is the risk any of us pre-orderers have taken, and it is the risk you take any time you alpha/beta fund or support a game that is still in development. If someone is not willing to assume the risks that go with funding an unfinished project, they should not alpha/beta fund. Just wait for the finished product and buy it as a traditional customer (though even that carries a lot of risk since the demise of demos).

Frankly, these risks are a reality in the entertainment industry, though I'm sure fans of (original) The Lone Ranger were not as emotionally invested in that movie as many gamers are in their dream games.

I take comfort in the fact that so far I see the devs staying true to what we all expect Starbound to be, and that they aren't rushing to release the beta too early. The thing is to not invest too much of yourself, emotionally, into an unfinished product that you, as the consumer, don't have any direct control over. Secondly, make sure your expectations are actually realistic. If you keep expecting the aliens to come and take you away to their spaceship behind the comet, you will perpetually be disappointed.

Will I be sad if Starbound doesn't live up to realistic expectations? You bet ya, but I will probably get my money's worth unless it is somehow the worst game of the year. Will I be sad if the beta doesn't come out in 2013? Sure, but it is not like I'm going to cancel a pre-order over that. Delays happen, and I am willing to risk that for the potential I see in Starbound.

I'm surprised a thread like this showed up, normally I'd expect to see only blind followers here, like in the youtube comments sections on Tiy's videos.
Anyhow, I myself have been following the game since slightly after the announcement of the game, and joined this forum around it's start (But left due to the forum being in a pretty bad condition) and so far, all the info and generally all I've seen about the game is pretty much enough to keep quite a few people hooked, if they liked Terraria. To this point, there's just about enough of everything to call it a game, and we can actually see that it's pretty cooked up already.
In fact I believe it's actually ready for gameplay, but we haven't seen a lot of sides of it, which could be the reason why we can't play the beta yet.
Now, unless most of the stuff we've seen now are apparently not going to be in game, there's pretty much no way the game can be bad, even if they'll add game breaking stuff now.
fuck mornings and my bad writings in them

    No.

Molly and Tiy have both outright confirmed a definite 2013 release.

I'll even get the exact quote, just for you.

A lot of what we see is set-up to be presentable, they mentioned before they they need to make the game playable without admin commands meaning all those pictures of spawned creatures had to done by someone going "/spawnmonster small 5" or some such. They do a very good job of avoiding showing anything that look incomplete or buggy. Kinda like how I could do a pretty good showing of a text adventure I made since I know how everything has to be typed and what I have completed and proofread, It would look like it was complete based on that yet everything I avoided showing could be the word "Room XY". Actually be quite easy to make a game look more polished and complete then it is just by only ever showing or talking in depth about what is complete.

Every game has a chance to fail, this is common knowledge and we simply hope for the best.
But, by saying it may be a failure or not implies that our tastes are defining the game, which obviously isn't true since the game will satisfy some people that have different point of view from the people who thought the game failed.

It's a textbook case of how feature creep can ruin games

I don't want to say starbound is suffering from feature creep, but the instruments and sounds system sounds a lot like it.

There's a fairly simple explanation for this. New ideas and new ways of making the game pops up all the time, and they want their game to be top notch so they take their time implementing everything they see fit. Also the coding doesn't always seem to go as planned, there's always some little problem that wasn't anticipated.. resulting to take longer than expected.

I don't think Starbound will be a failure, I mean christ they earned 1.50 mil just from preorders on word of mouth alone.

However I'm doubting this game will live up to the hype that's been accumulating this past year and a half

  14. The amount of money they got means nothing. There were game projects that have raised millions too and suddenly they were out of money lol...
Starbound will surpass end go beyond my hype, it's already so much more that I 've asked for.

Well, it seems I missed those declarations. I guess a "Thank you" and a "My bad" are in order.
However, they did say that Starbound was supposed to be released in 2012 too. And they were wrong about that.
Though, the situation isn't the same now: they got the pre-order money, they are working on the game regurarly, and, well, Affero did explain what other problems the team probably faced (and resolved now). The usual hazards which come when you are developping a video game.

Oh well, I guess I was overly pessimistic (realistic in my mind, but probably pessimistic in the eyes of others).

Will the game be a success, or the sales?
When game sells a lot at launch, it doesn't guarantee the game itself is a success. The game might be complete crap.

Now, don't get me wrong. I never said Starbound is complete crap. From what I've seen, it looks really nice. I enjoyed Terraria. Starbound is FAR BEYOND Terraria. It has tons of more content, different mechanics and different goals.

Now, what I wanted to say is that like some people have said, people tend to get bored easily. That's why you can get an appointment at doctor, so you don't have to go and WAIT for the doctor to take you in. That's why (here in Finland at least) there are those tickets at certain places that have a number. You take one of those, that's your service number. There's probably some sort of display that shows the current service number going. That gives you vague guess of how long you're going to have to WAIT to get the service you want.

If you know how long you have to wait, you are more patient at waiting. Also if you have waited long enough, it doesn't feel as bad to wait for longer. Here's an interesting blog regarding this matter. In the blog, they have studied with several groups of people, where they get certain rewards depending on how long they have waited for different amount of times. When given chance to get small stuff now, or bigger stuff later, most of the people choose the small stuff now. However, some of the people are given choices "Get an iPad in 15 days, or get an upgraded version in 40 days. However, you can make your choice in 13 when we contact you."

60% of the people chose to wait for the 40 days, instead of taking the 15 day offer. That's twice the amount of people choosing to wait regarding to the earlier tests.

My point is: give a beta date (doesn't matter how far in 2013) and push it a month or two back if needed. I'm going to assume (based on the research on the blog) that 60% of the community will be happy with this choice. Now I don't have any actual research data to base my next statement on, but I assume it's more happy people than there currently are. And you can't make everyone happy. Never.

I personally think that giving the Beta a date is not a good thing because dates tend to lead to more pressure, if Chucklefish don't deliver the Alpha/Beta again on the announced date, the people will collapse and the result won't be good for the game.
Even if they put the release to December 31, 2013, there's a risk that the game won't be polished enough for Beta, they have to consider alot of things before releasing it because many people takes the Beta as a final product, it's a little % of the community that actually gives important feedback, etc., the rest will rampage the forums with bugs, suggestions to add/remove things and so on...

I don't like repeating the old speech: "I don't care about how long does it take, I'll wait forever...", but I don't see many options here, if Chucklefish anytime soon gives us an announcement with a date, I hope they have the Beta 99% done, so absolutely nothing can put that release in danger.
