What if Starbound is a failure?

If this fails or turns to vaporware, I'll go to Tiy's house and kill him. I'll kill him good.

On a more serious note, if this game fails I will demand that they give us everything they've done so far and release it to the community because if they never finish, someone else has to. You can't promise me something and not make it happen somehow. Us, the fans who were so loyal, will finish this game. It will be developed by the community and it will be a collaboration the world has never seen before.

I doubt it will ever get to that point though.

It's not like they've missed a release date before... right? Right?!?!

That's my problem with Chucklefish, how can you offshoot the release by a year? How can you be so disconnected from your game? I can see it if it was 2 months or something because they ran into some game breaking bugs, but if you are making a game, and you have an idea for all the features, how can you incorrectly predict your own game's release by a year? That's astonishing how someone can have such a lack of sense of completion with their own project.

But how can you estimate that badly on several different occasions? How can one be so clueless about the readiness of their own game?

Maybe not a financial failure. The War Z certainly wasn't a financial failure, but it failed as a game.

Lack of experience making your own game. Nothing to be ashamed of.

Well, starbound is just one f the games that I've followed thus far. I understand that it is possible for the Devs to completely botch this game, and if it happens, oh well. There are other games (or school work, notch forbid) that I can spend my time playing, and life will go on regardless. Life will always go on, with or without starbound.

That's my main issue with the responses of topics like this. People think life will end if they don't get to play Starbound/if it's not good. Just silly. Thank you for your post. +1

Tiy is not a faker, his presence has been know far before when he sprited for Terraria and was the main artist for Hedgewars.

Somebody would not spend years pretending to be a different person, and even so, how could he control all the devs IRC profiles?

Well, to be fair, the majority of earth's surface will be bathed in the ensuing flames of raging fans for days, which will kick up enough trolls to block out the skies for 2-3 years, resulting in the greatest mass extinction event since the one between the Paleozoic and Mesozoic era, but oh well. Life goes on, and there are constantly other new games to play with. I mean, sure, we'll be blasted back to the stone age, but there will always be cool and exciting new indie games for us to play with. Starbound is just a single game that has promise; we can still enjoy life otherwise.

If it fails then I'll hold out for The Repopulation. If that fails then I'll continue to look forward to Star Citizen. If Star Citizen fails then I will hopefully have another game I will be looking forward to.

"If" starbound is bad? Sir, that is heresy! remove his brain, he must not be allowed to spread these lies!

(Regardless of what people think about it, from what i've seen I will love it and play it until my brain barfs from over exposure)

To actually respond, since I haven't done so yet, life goes on. I'm beginning to look forward to what I plan on doing with my life. If Starbound flops, God forbid, then I will do the same as if it releases: continue working, find some sort of game to occupy my free time, and eventually go to school for bartending. Gonna wait until I'm 21 for that, though. Or maybe just before I turn 21. The state I live in has a minimum age of 21 for serving alcohol, so it would do me no good in the mean time.

Coming out in 2015? I find that pretty unlikely.
I guess all we can really do for now is trust to the dev's promise that the game will be out by 2013.
I just wonder, if people will be able to gain access to the game during Beta, do the dev's consider that 'The Release' that needs to happen before 2013 is done?

This thread is blasphemy. Have you no faith in He Who Is Greatest In Development, Our Lord, Tiy?
Really though, it's not going to. I am 100% sure that this game will succeed. Beyond even our expectations. I imagine it will win indie game of the year, next year, when it releases. Beta will be 2013, release 2014. That's what I'm thinking.
If it somehow failed though, oh well. These people, whoever they are, that are acting like it's the end of the world if they can't play a video game, need to grow up. It's really not that big of a deal.

    Seriously.

    It's not.

I do like how many people seem to want to or would be in support of continuing work on the game if anything happened to it (bad release, abandoned but source released, etc).

If it fails it fails, people will get mad, people will get depressed, and people will move on. The world will go on spinning.

What if I go to the interview with a white shirt?... Oh wait shit, what if I get attacked by a T-rex and have to fight it to the death, shit! Then I'll get blood all over my white shirt! Crap.... yeah better not wear white.
