What if Starbound is a failure?

You guys are too optimistic. The Beta hasn't even come out and everyone's already saying it won't fail. There is a chance it will. Again, I'm not saying it will, I'm just discussing my thoughts.

If it fails it fails. The new Rambo game is far superior anyway, so everybody will forget this wreck of a game.

lol I am not saying it will be game of the year but really there has been no hard evidence so far what so ever that it will fail as bad you say. It's made by one company it's not being farmed out like colonial marines was and is not switching publishers every 5 years like duke nukem forever was. Your dooms day prediction just comes out of nowhere.

Noooo, Did anybody even read the damn post? I said I wanted it to succeed a couple of times, and JUST DISCUSSING one reason how starbound can fail.

I did it just seems like your patience is eroding and so you fear the worst irrational possibility. I know really you just want to discuss a hypothetical scenario because you are bored but it's just a bleak disheartening post to read. I am not on the hype train believing that starbound will be better than any game ever created, but come on your post is the extreme opposite of that spectrum.

I believe Tiy plans on releasing a beta by the end of this year, regardless of what stage of development it's at. The thing is, if he doesn't, then you're right. People would ask for refunds en masse, and Chucklefish would be hit hard. As such, I'm pretty sure that at least beta will release this year no matter what.

And you still have not cited your source for Bartwe saying that it would be tricky to release the beta before December. I'd like to see the source.

If the game is delayed past this year I'm going to cancel my pre-order

Not because I can't wait, but because They promised us a 2013 release.

Giving a rough estimate towards release with no pre-orders open and not getting it is fine, no money's changed hands, no promises have been made.

But they've promised and confirmed multiple times it's coming out on 2013. I bought the game on that promise, as did many others.

No. They estimated that the beta and the game would be released in 2013. That's not the same. The pre-order page explicitly mentions that the release date is estimated for 2013. It's an estimation, something vague, it's not a set date.
And, I don't want to twist the knife in the wound, but the devs themselves admitted that they were bad with estimations. No surprise here.
So, even if the game isn't released in 2013, I wouldn't be surprised, nor would I ask for a refund, because I knowingly and willingly pre-ordered the game under those conditions. It doesn't mean that I wouldn't be a little disappointed, but I prepared myself for such scenario.

On a side note, if anything, we should be reassured by the numerous daily updates the team is providing us. When countless games are stuck into limbo and don't provide any informations whatsoever to the possible consumers, or worse are changing hands and get stuck into development hell, Starbound seems to be quite healthy in comparison.

Based on what I have seen: Even if it "failed" the games still likely to be good.

Worst case scenario: We are left with a sort of good game, chucklefish disbands, the forums shut down. Fan-forums takeover, and modding begins to finish features promised during the year after release or for patches should the game be released incomplete or imbalanced.

(Which none of this is likely.)

What exactly is the point of this thread? Listen, I like to be cynical as much as the next guy, but based on what they've been saying in the daily updates, I do actually believe that they will make good on their estimate of a beta in 2013, even if it is later than I would like. Also, expressing concern that the game might end up glitchy/boring is counterproductive if you want a beta, since if Chucklefish thinks people are worried about that then they will keep putting off beta until they feel everything is perfect (which, in fact, defeats the purpose of a beta).

Also, you can't just say this
without a source. Plus, even if Bartwe did say that, I'd think that Tiy (as the project manager) would have a better idea about that anyway.

frankly, if they've already taken this long to make the game, got thousands of people hyped for this game, listening to community suggestions and concerns, and are not working under a strict release schedule, there is no way they will fail this.

    Don't worry.

Seeing as the game is supposed to go into beta before release, surely it will be on us too help the devs fix whatever problems may be causing the game to be dull?

Basically if Starbound fails, you should probably kill yourself.

There is much subjectiveness in this discussion : )

    ---

I wouldn't worry. Game developers, for the most part, like to make things that people like. If something is broken or really messed up on Starbound, I'm pretty sure the devs will fix it.

what if Tiy is really an old chinese man in china pretending to be an entire dev team and creating a mock up of a game in order to steal Americans' money so that he can fulfill his dream of becoming the greatest pigeon racer in the word???

    Would you be mad?
Or happy that you helped an old man follow his dreams?

Nope, Tiy has stated on several occasions that the beta WILL be out in 2013.

Edit: I've got this to back it up.
