To bad my friends ARE the cheaters. I have no hope in escaping from the terrors of third party software.

Well, it's pretty much inevitable that those things WILL be, at some point.
But there should be a kick/ban server option/command, no?

Also, sometimes such hacking can be justified, like...
You want to build stuff without having to collect all the actual garbage, or...
Your save was deleted and you don't want to be forced to start all over or...

    You get the point.

The cheating this is why I was going to write a suggestion for a pluggable server out the gate. On early (before Bukkit) Minecraft servers, cheating was a huge problem because you couldn't really modify server behavior to keep cheaters from doing things they shouldn't be.

The problem isn't people using inventory editing programs. The problem is people coming to servers and griefing with them.

I think that people can hack whatever the hell they want onto their character as long as they're either playing singleplayer or they're on a server specifically designed for hacked characters to play on. But once they come onto a server where hacked characters aren't allowed and then start ruining everyone else's fun, that's where we run into problems.

The best thing I think they can do is seek the help of benevolent hackers who know how such programs would work, and then help make countermeasures for it. It takes a hacker to stop a hacker.

Video's description text: Using Zidonuke's client to drop banned items in a protected server so that the player is automatically kicked.

    That name sounds familiar no?

  10. I really like invedit programs. Why?
It allows for creativity. Sometimes, when you want to make a mega-awesome death arena with spikes and fire and trees and lava and dragons and paladins, you don't want to waste 3 months to build something you might only use once or twice. Or perhaps you want to have a challange where everyone can only use stacks of bombs. Or perhaps you wish to build an adventure map, just build for fun or test things out.

Invedit is your best freind. Cheating, is when you go against the rules. The rules of the game are whatever you want them to be. Just because the original Monopoly doesn't allow bank robbery doesn't mean you can't play it like that.

I'm assuming they're going to try for some type of Accounts system that'll categorize the characters you own into specific groups:

~ Characters that belong to a specific server (Assuming characters' server files can't be transferred from one server to another)
~ Characters that: connect to servers that don't require a new character; for SSP (Single-player)

I hope they spend a lot of time on that menu, as navigating easily between characters you more-recently used, or viewing a list of servers you've played on or have Favorited, would make that log-in screen not only pretty, but convenient.

That's what I'm saying. As long as invedit programs aren't abused and used to ruin the fun of other players, then they're fine.

I don't think I like the server side character idea. Sure it might stop cheating, which is good, but having a character I can't play at all when the server is down would suck. I loved that I always had my character in Terraria. Any progress I made whether server side or single player, was saved to him. He was my character no matter where he was. If I simply lost access to him when the server was down, I probably won't be playing online at all.

Theoretically you'd be able to save a local copy of the character that you could play elsewhere, but couldn't bring the changes back to the server later.

As she said, this could also be done; your computer and the server both have a file of the character whenever you log out. In such a case, if you want to do some things offline with that character, you theorhetically should be able to (but you'll most likely have to use him on a Singleplayer planet, since you're not downloading the Server map for hacking/ore locating). That way you keep the server security integrity, while still having the option to use that character offline.

If you honestly expect Starbound to be the first non-server sided game where hackers do not appear in the history of all games you have too much hope and I envy.
    Even Minesweeper have hacks.
