What happened to the trailer?

That, right there, is why they don't do guesses on the beta date or anything else. People can't handle the fact that sometimes, things just might not work out as planned and be understanding about what a massive undertaking projects this size are.

I was thinking the same thing yesterday, but I don't care much about the trailer anymore, the daily updates are great!

I don't think they have ever had anything come out on time when they said it would, except for the Starbound chronicle which is like a page long

I can't help but find it a little funny that I think I said this when people were talking about the trailer coming "next week" like a month ago

Yes I agree with you some what... they seem to be a little to ambitious and hyper focus on some minute parts of the game and things to release info wise are quite small. I can imagine though if you get a good idea or something that it may distract you from your promised things and the results of that may benefit the game much more to your and my liking then just seeing more of the game. Patience is a virtue sir and I get where you're coming from but have a little empathy for them. They are making a lot of stuff we have no clue about. Personally I'd rather have the beta then a short clip of game footage :D :fireball: :gooby::chucklefish::V:rolleyes::(;):x:mindwurm::cookie: enjoy my emotes

'Gratz, you've won this week's "I've just answered my own question" award.

It's possible, just barely possible, that they want to put together something that is truly representative of the final product and deserving of the vision, and that required more time. And they hesitate to put out a reformed release date because with all of the content still in development, they can't commit to a delivery date for all of that just yet, and are reserving this time for more development, and--as you yourself said--to think about what they are telling to their community before posting anything. (Especially a trailer, which is the penultimate representation of your game.) You know, like professionals do.

A quick side note: Attitudes like this about what Chucklefish "needs to do" and all the inferences that come with it make us less deserving of a trailer, a release date, or any extra insight at all, really. Maybe you should take a few moments to think about what you're saying, too.

I agree and much prefer daily updates to a trailer.

We can see the game any time someone streams in any case (which happens a lot).

You misunderstand me, and that's ignoring the fact that my entire post contains no question mark. Let me rephrase. They should not have told us a trailer was coming if it was not ready, and I feel as if it would have been ready, or at least not been announced, had they used better time management, which has been the case in the past.

If it required more time, they should not have announced they would be releasing a trailer, just as Tiy should not have told us the game was releasing last summer, which as you said, is exactly my point.

Professionals set deadlines for themselves and do not announce things so frivolously, professionals know what they are and are not capable of and act accordingly, professionals understand how to properly manage and interact with their community, professionals do not disappoint their fans by their own accord, and finally, professionals learn from their past mistakes and do not so consistently repeat them. Know that I do not makes these complaints out of hate. Starbound looks absolutely amazing, and most everyone on the development team is wonderful. I am extremely excited about the project and I wish them the best, and hope for Starbound to be as good as it possibly can, which is why it is so frustrating and depressing to see them fumble like this.

Chucklefish is screwing up here, that much is obvious to anyone. You're right that I don't have some divined knowledge on what exactly that is, but I do know they need to stop screwing up like this. Also, criticizing them does not make anyone less deserving of anything. They are not some golden gods that must be worshiped lest they strike us down, and I suggest you take a few moments to think about what you're typing, because the blind, biased defense of them you're putting up is pathetic. I understand they're working hard, and this is a stressful time for all them, and they probably don't appreciate my or anyone else's dissent, but this is how I feel, and what else is the internet for than to yell about my feelings at strangers?

    EDIT:

You're quite right Starbound Forums Automated Systems, I cannot be stopped, and am going "off da railz", for I have another complaint. Let us whine, complain, moan, and argue with eachother more, Starbound Moderation team. Discussion is the seed of understanding. How else can we grow into beautiful trees of insight, without a bit of yelling? This place is far too much of a hugbox at times.

Might I inquire as to where people got these supposed dates and missed deadlines for the trailer? The only thing I ever read on the subject was the May newsletter released a whole 3 weeks ago saying they were releasing a trailer 'ASAP'.

Oh man you are my new best friend.

I cannot stress how annoying it is to have people running and screaming blindly to the defense of the developers and everyone else on the forums whenever someone posts criticism. I don't mind when people respectfully disagree with others, but often I'll see someone complain (quite rightly) about the overuse of the word "soon" only to have people come out and essentially go nuts at them simply because they don't treat Chucklefish like infallible gods.

Uhm, yeah, given a choice between people who are actually producing a product I'd like to enjoy or some random forumer who's posting whines and nothing else of note, I'll side with the people who are actually doing something constructive. It shouldn't be that difficult a decision, really...

  15. Be Aware, ASAP said by Tiy means: ASAP 2013.

Honestly I'm already used to the team to not be able to accomplish the dates they set to make things, from the Trailer to the RoadMap Update.
It's not that professional to say "hey trailer next week" and then, Silence. Well, I just wait. :cautious:

I didn't read through the thread, but Tiy said he's waiting for combat to be complete before finishing the trailer. They are working on combat at the moment so we are getting there.

Criticism is all well and good, and I would support criticism, but telling someone, or a group of people what they should be doing, or how they should be doing it simply to please you is quite another. Even more so when the tone of such self-entitled demands come across as insulting. While dates have been made, and broken, I doubt that "time management" is the biggest problem for a group of people working from all around the world. The only things Chucklefish has done wrong is 1) reveal the game way too soon. Something which Tiy himself regrets, and 2) having stated a release date that was unrealistically optimistic. Something Tiy has also openly regretted. I have no doubt that they, who by the way, owe you nothing, are working as hard as they can to get Starbound released so they can do all those crazy things people like to do, like eat and pay rent. This is their job after all, not a hobby. What will not help is the stomping of one's literary foot into the floors of the forums and demanding that Chucklefish do things the way that would the stomper most happy. They are not making this game (and yes, it is a game) for us, they are making it for themselves so they can earn a living. They will do it as best they see fit. Tiy, Molly, and the rest are extremely kind to listen to the community's concerns and suggestion. That's what makes them a respectable group of people, and a good company. They are however not obligated to do so.

They are not infallible gods, they are human beings. Treat them that way. And if acting like an entitled child, and demanding that people obey you, and do things your way is the way you treat human beings, then the problem lies not with the game developers. The problem lies with you.

TL;DR : Chucklefish owes us nothing. They will take as long as they like. Learn to treat people like human beings. If you don't like it, don't play. Millions of other will. You are not needed.

  18. It's not a question of criticism here. They're the ones who are giving dates that can't accomplish, far I know nobody forced them to announce dates.
I understand that they can be overloaded and don't want to add pressure, but simply: If they aren't certain, they just say "we're working on it" instead of "going for it next week". Because if this keeps happening, people will simply stop trusting the team.

They can take as long as they like, just don't announcing dates that in the end we see nothing but silence.

I've not seen anything insulting from his posts. He's pointing out quite bluntly where they need to pick up their game. If they aren't accustomed to such criticism and find it insulting then they shouldn't be developing a video game that will be open to public scrutiny.

Time Management may not be the problem, however he has pointed out again quite rightly that they should stop making promises if they cannot keep them. Its good that they regret an early reveal and optimistic release dates, however they are also seemingly overly optimistic about other things, such as a promised trailer. They say "soon" but they really mean "We don't know." I'd much prefer they just said "we don't know."

I don't recall claiming they owed me anything. However if they want to make a successful game, and avoid public scrutiny, they'll need to appeal to their community. This doesn't have anything to do with "owing" us anything.

Thats great, what does that have to do with the question of criticism and people white knighting them all the time? Its good that they're working hard, and we aren't claiming that they aren't working hard. That isn't the issue we have raised here, so I don't know why you brought it up.

We're not telling them how to develop the game, we're giving them feedback on the way they present updates and estimations and such to their community. It isn't ok to make estimations that fall through time and time again, they should (and have, thankfully) acknowledge that they don't know. It keeps people from getting annoyed. Its good to be optimistic, but not when it causes you to start making false statements.

In order to make money, they need to be making a game the community will enjoy. The argument that they're making a game for themselves to make a living doesn't make any sense. They are making a game, for their target audience, in order for that audience to buy said game and hence give them money. Money isn't the only objective however, as they are clearly very passionate about this project. Also I don't know why you felt you needed to point out its a game, we're aware its a game. We are just giving criticism.

Ok thats great, we realize they're not obligated to listen to us. I don't see why that means we shouldn't voice our complaints. If they ARE listening to us then we should rightfully give them the criticism they need in order to ensure they're on the right track to appease their community. It makes no sense to acknowledge that the developers listen to us, and then say 'But you shouldn't criticize them because they aren't OBLIGATED to listen to us.' It doesn't matter that they aren't obligated to, what matters is that they ARE.

    We are, hence the criticism.

I think you're reading a tone from our complaints that just isn't there. I'll acknowledge that there are a lot of bitchy, whiney complaints made that don't add anything constructive. The ones you are responding to are not among them.

If this is an accurate summary of your post, you missed the point we were making. We are not complaining about the lack of release, we are complaining about the inaccuracy of announcements made by the developers. Like you, we are eager to play this game, and like you, we aren't trying to tell the developers when they should be releasing the game. Where we differ, is that we think the developers would do better to give accurate estimates based on fact, rather than optimism, and refrain from saying things just to keep the whiners at bay that will ultimately turn out to be false and hence provoke more whining.

Wow, this is unnecessary. The scroll bar on my browser is getting some exercise, someone get the fire hose, etc. etc.

If you want to be "constructive" and "realistic," consider that more deadlines mean more compromises. That's the choice every single developer makes. And personally, I'd rather have a reasonable wait than a neutered development period, resulting in more shortcuts and oversights. Regardless, the amount of whining and "criticism" going on is unreal, on both sides. Everyone misses everyone's point, more bickering ensues, end thread. Chill out.
