I am a long time defender of CF over on the Steam forums... But i must say, if its true they pulled the DRM-Free copy with no warning and are no longer offering refunds, i may have to change camps.

Now, dont get me wrong, this doesnt change my stance on how i was going to play. I was going to use the Steam copy at all times becuase i love Steam, but the DRM-Free extra copy was HUGE part of the Pre-order selling points for many customers. I really think someone from CF needs to tell us whats going on.

The game hasn't gone gold, so technically they don't need to provide one yet.

But AFAICT, Steam is only used to provide updates; there is no requirement to have Steam running in order to run the current Starbound beta. I have not yet tested whether Steam needs to be installed though.

I havnt tried with the latest build, but my concern is that the DRM Free Copy listing has been pulled from the humble sales page completely with no explanation. Its a very legitimate concern and a lot of steam users are pretty upset that no one from CF has said anything.

It's still listed at http://playstarbound.com/store/ though.

    "... a non-Steam DRM-free copy of Starbound."

Thats atleast less worrysome. But i wonder why it was taken off the Humble sale page.

But you do it so nicely, and without calling people names. If this removal of humble DRM-Free copy turns you to the darkside, I'll be happy.

Do it. Turn away from mediocrity. Call for the overthrow of the current Starbound board and push for a new roadmap of what awesome ideas are coming, and which aren't so I can go play something else instead of waiting for this game to live up to the original pitch.

As Teh Freek said, they haven't released the DRM-free copy yet. This is because they're currently relying on Steam to push updates. Once the need to update the game has lessened, expect attention to return to a DRM-free copy being set up.

But again, why was the mention of DRM-Free removed from the humble sale page entirely?

No idea. Maybe to prevent people from being confused by the fact it's not currently available.

Steam can run Starbound in offline so it's already DRM free.
It was stated before the beta even started that the non-Steam copy wouldn't be available until the game was much further in development that updates weren't coming so often.
And it makes sense, them having to manually put out non-Steam updates as well as pushing updates through on Steam just cuts down on actual development time.

Still doesnt answer why the "DRM Free copy" has been removed from the sales page on humble.

No one is going to be able to give us answers unless its from an actual CF developer of HB staff member

  17. I don't understand what you aren't getting.
You're complaining because a few words were removed from a website. So what? The game is DRM Free already, as we have already stated. You are just pointlessly arguing over something that doesn't even matter.
It was a "promise" for the future. The promise has been fulfilled. No reason to sit here bickering about it.

Possibly a confusion between a delivery system and DRM.

The company is obliged to deliver a non-steam DRM copy of the game. It even says so on the store page of this very website :-

"You'll receive immediate access to the Starbound beta on Steam Early access, a digital copy of the game's soundtrack and, when available, a non-Steam DRM-free copy of Starbound."

That's not been fulfilled yet. So not sure why you are suggesting that's been fulfilled, when the store page explicitly refers to this as coming later "when available".

I believe they had clarified that it is after 1.0 comes out.
