What Genre is starbound?

I made this thread earlier but I messed up the pole and I think confused people, so I got it locked to recreate it.

I haven't seen a label really anywhere describing what genre starbound is, and I was wondering, what would you classify it as specifically?

Just to clarify, I kind of consider Starbound as an MMO because it can support 1000+ players on a server, isnt that an mmo?

 

Sandbox genre. Its a new genre only because computers and CPUs didnt know how to correctly handle it at first. All those calculations...

However, this is a genre I can get down with.

 

If anything... I'd call it a slow-paced adventure game. Not a typical adventure game, of course... But I think exploring thousands of alien planets is considered an adventure! A fantastic adventure of epic proportions!

 

It's a paced-as-you-like RPG in a Sandbox Universe... In which you can adventure.

obviously it is a space opera sandbox adventure with RPG elements and single and multiplayer capable

I hope the game is sort of slow paced that means the experience will last longer and there will always(mostly) going to be something new for me to find or a new challenge to overcome and I will still have the feeling that there's still a lot that I haven't see yet

 

It is whatever you make of it. I, for one, will be playing a slow paced RPG/Action/Adventure style with some platforming, hopefully. But as I stated previously, it's mostly about how you want to play it.

 

i'd just say its a "sci-fi adventure sandbox" game
sounds the simplest and most accurate if you think about it

 

Mutli&Singleplayer-open world-adventure-sandbox-action-game with rpg and city building elements... Honestly it seemed pretty obvious.

It's a sandbox adventure game.

 

I was thinking it could be classified under RPG because of the random and mmo because of the server possibility, but I mean Molly said it so.

 

Personally when I think MMO I think of games that are exclusively (or mostly) about playing on a global server, like Guild Wars 2 and such.

 

The game's not exclusively MASSIVELY multiplayer and the randomly generated aspects don't quite make it an RPG. I think the categories that fit it best are sandbox/adventure! In fact, it's been advertised as "a story within a sandbox".

 

Starbound is Djent/Math metal with a touch of symphonic rock and electronic music.
