if you completely chopped down all the trees mined all the coal and any other fuel source I guess you would have to delete your character and start a new one

Doesn't have to be, the planet just has to be too cold/airless for you to survive long enough to do any of those.

Singleplayer: It is almost impossible to be stranded unless you did not prepare ahead or have bad luck finding fuel.
Multiplayer: This can be an issue if the server had griefers or players who take everything and not plant trees. Only thing you could do is to look for another server or ask the server host to do a roll back.

Given that you can bring stuff from single player into multiplayer, you need only go back to your single player worlds to get some fuel for multiplayer.

Lol, I forgot about that. Thanks for pointing it out. But yeah, that is also another way to fix multiplayer fuel issues.

You can't. It's impossible to be permanently stuck on a planet. As mentioned already you can have another character fly to the planet and drop some fuel in a chest, problem solved (yes this works in single player, offline).

That's why you don't let it get to that point. If that were to happen to someone then that's their own fault. A solution would be to play with a friend to give you some fuel.

I don't think anybody will ever be truly stranded because they end up stuck on a planet without the resources to get away... but there are worlds where the spawn is unsurvivable. In most cases, this is because you beam down into lava (yes, this can even happen as a quirk of worldgen in single player). In others, it's because it's the first planet you beam to in a new sector and the spawn puts you in a particularly harsh dungeon where enemies can kill you during the respawn animation and there's no way to stop it other than Save & Quit.

In the first case, that can happen to your first spawn world and you're completely screwed. In the second, it's still possible to get stranded there by accidentally marking the world as your home world before beaming down the first time (or while trying to see if there's somewhere else you can fly to with what meager fuel you have left).

In both cases you're screwed even if the world is otherwise entirely made of solarium.

What about landing a barren planets that do not offer any source of trees or ores?
That's if... barren planets would even exist. Though, it would be horrible if you landed on one of these for a starter planet.
But now that I think about it, barren planets could also serve as huge underground loot bases that could be difficult to find, but pays great in rewards.
Besides, you could always do what the whole multiplayer switch thingy.

I can see this happening. I once mined out an entire world on Terraria, everyblock from world top to world bottom. A malicious player could do this on a world on a server, or even just a large area of it.

    Easy.
    1. Make new character
    2. Mine Coal on different planet
    3. Go to planet your old character is stuck on
    4. Drop chest and place coal.
    5. Switch to other character get coal
    6. Win!

One of my character started off on a moon planet; I was forced to delete him, because there's no way for me to chop down wood to make a pick. Whenever you encounter a situation where you cannot go anywhere, have no pick, cannot build a pick nor can you chop wood or mine stone, then that's technically the end for your character; while any other situation will give you a glimmer of hope, if you are on a planet with no oxygen and no proper gears, or a really cold planet with no proper gears, then it's really, really tough for you to get back on your feet. Of course, if you've made a home planet before, then all hope is not lost.

Oh. Or this. This works too.
