What do you want out of ships?

Hmm, a randomized crew with story and personal missions (aka mass effect 2 but with randomized crewmen) would be epicness.

WHAT IF when you customized your ship, it turned off the theme, and you could cut away parts and re-add parts?

There is nothing here that I want that hasn't been mentioned or glossed over, but this one thing that would be cool, the ability to change, exchange, and paint the outer-part of the ship... Example:

Change: You can switch out designs and shapes on the ship:
    - The Humans can change the front-ship,
    - The Avian can change the gem shape, "pyramid" shape, etc.
    - The Apex can change the hull and exhaust
    - The Florian can change the vines, flowers, etc.
    - The Hylotl can change the head, fins, etc.
    - The Glitch can change the cannon, gear, etc.

Exchange: You can find merchants who sell the pieces you want

Paint: Paint parts of the ship different colors.

There is one little thing I would like,

I'd like the ability to buy the other race's A.I's and install it. I like some AI's more than others and I'd rather not play that race to get it. Or if I'm playing a modded race it would be nice to have the buy option in vanilla.

Ultimately I'd like to see a ship I can create myself. A shipyard system almost. There would have to be rules on what constituted a valid ship, choice of materials, sealed hull, engines etc. perhaps even craftable/upgradable engines and nav computer. More importantly for me the space gameplay element could be expanded, making it more involved than just travelling between planets.

I like that idea, being able to land in shipyards and upgrade/build your ship that way. It would be cool to even buy new ships, like from scratch and work on them from there.

    • Options to customize the dimensions of rooms (not stuck with the same 10 block height for the current ship's cabin) Basically, I don't want to have to cram rooms together because of the shape of the hull.
    • Moveable captain's chair, fuel slot, locker, and ai interface.
    • Some kind of large 20-30 block wide 'item' that can be placed on a planet to allow the ship to land, such as a set of lights to denote a landing zone.
    • Airlocks to go outside of a large ship and fight mynocks and other space beasts.
    • A more minimalistic option for some of the ships, such as the Hylotl ship. Fish shaped or inspired, but not with googly eyes and scales.
    • The ability to design and print a selection of blocks and items, similar to copy and paste. Things like a 9 button keypad linked to a door could be saved and used later without rewiring the entire thing, and also shared online more easily.

Landing. I want to be able to land, or crash my ship into the planet's surface. Hell, I would even give up the teleporter if I could select a landing site.

And Orbital Bombardment. Being able to call down artillery strikes from orbit would practically make PvP for me.

I'd like a better design for stages 6 & 7 of the Apex ship. The ships should also come equipped with certain things such as beds, to make them more believable, and finally I'd like the jump sequence length to be related to the distance you are travelling. If you're travelling to a planet in the same area (like a planet's moon or something) it shouldn't be very long. If it's just in the same solar system, then it takes longer, and if it's farther than that...... well, you get my drift. Maybe up-gradable engines, or engines that require repairs every so often, or have different fuel capacities would be great too.

As long as this thread is coming out of mothballs...ship to ship combat. But I don't see that happening.

Functional guns! There would be a gun capsule at level 5(?) ships that you could go into and there would be a display that can be interacted with. You then search for a ship, choose to attack it and get ze lootz!

No open fires (campfire / furnace etc..) allowed on ship. Forces you to build on a planet. Just now there is no in-game reason to build a settlement, if you can load up the ship with all the crafting stuff.

Hadn't thought about the open fire thing...that wouldn't be such a great idea in a pressurized hull.

    Just 2 things:

    1 - For it to be as customizable as possible;
2 - For it to have lots of space.

I want the ship to actually have an impact. All it does is serve as an overly large and overly expensive door to get from world to world. I want to be able to do things with it. Ship to ship docking, landing, piloting, techs to have the ship fire from orbit (or appear to do so)- with what it can do directly related to upgrades you give the ship. I'd also like the ship to actually be a ship. The current ships look like nothing more than little shuttles. Shuttles you'd see in the hangar of an actual space ship. Or rather, instead of being space ships the current vehicles are space craft instead.

But in the end I'm more or less content and can just rely on mods to fix the game.

    1) Multiple ships to find/buy.....obviously the player would never have more than one but maybe the extra owned ones could maybe be docked at a space station or something and the player could go swap out the current ship.

    2) Ship factory....a place where the player can build his/her own ship....maybe have a streamlined process....kind of like playing with legos.....select room shape, material, place etc......or just let the player do what the custom ship mods do now.

    3) A landing shuttle that visually docks on your ship....I mean how cool is that? You go to the hangar, jump on this shuttle, exit the ship and then you get to ride it around the planet, land it and so on.

I would like a Star Trek U. S. S. Enterprise size ship, because the current ships are too cramped in my opinion.

I would like ships to be more interactive, besides flying bed and breakfast, with a lot of storage space. I want to be able to upgrade my ship even further than just more space.

I want to be able to build an engine room, where i can build reactor(s) and direct the power from these to my engines. I want to be able to setup a functional medical bay, where i can quickly regenerate in pods or produce medical supplies for on the planet. I'd like to build a communications room, where i can setup more teleporters or place beacons for friendly ships.
A scanner room where i can go to gather more information about the planet i am orbiting, or scan for specific resources/players, depending on the quality of the equipment/scanner it can be done faster. Longer range takes longer to scan. And having some NPCs crew sounds like fun aswell.

No idea how the ships are planned for the future, all i know is they can be bigger.

    -Modular Customizable Ships
    -Drop ships
-which can land on the Planet Surface
-with Weapons like the old Dreadwings UFO
-with a Ramp on the Back, like in Cargo ... where you can park a Jeep or sth. like this
-Can Jump between Planets in same star system
-Is your Starting Ship, you have to find the main ship to make FTL-Jumps

    -Space Combats
-Planets with orbital defensive satellites where you only can land with strong enough shields or dodge engine
-manually Ship Control, to avoid asteroid rings, to come in Beam range, to Aim orbital bombardment
    -etc.

My opinion on any manual control for the ship should be optional, but it would have benefits.

For example, when jumping between systems, the player has a choice to jump as now, or to manually control the ship in some sort of minigame. The manual mode would have the benefit of having increased fuel economy, making it worth the while, but not necessary to play the game.

The ships also should be a little bit tall IMO. I like to place platforms in the rooms to make them 2 tiered, and the fact the platform as to be inside the top of the doorways to have the two half be the same bugs the crap outta me.
