What do you want out of ships?

I think I remember Tiy saying somewhere that he wanted to implement an FTL-type combat system in space. Not sure exactly what that means, other than the fact that he wants some tactical ship combat stuff in space, which I am TOTALLY all for.

I think that room specialisation should be tied to npc crew members. While specialised rooms sound pretty rad, I want to be able to maintain a good degree of customisation.

Upon hiring a medic say, place him in a room and he can provide you with a basic service - maybe faster regen. Then you could strike up a conversation with him and he could be all like: "Well I like what you've done with my room, but if you placed objects X and Y here, I could offer you service Z."

That would be a good practical way to balance customisation with flavour. The room doesn't undergo a total conversion and become semi-locked down. Instead you slowly upgrade it through "questing" for the appropriate crew member - but importantly, the player maintains agency about what goes where etc.

    ----

I'd throw a vote in against the inclusion of mini-games of any kind. A game should be able to accomplish what it wants to without tacking on extra systems.

You remember correctly. There was a news entry about some thoughts on post release things.

Actually, I am glad I hunted that down. There's some concepts on there that I forgot about that are really quite awesome. :D

No. I can barely tolerate the RNG based bull-crap in FTL as it is, and it's designed with that combat in mind. Tiy's getting too ambitious right now, he'd have to have the engine re-written to support such a different kind of combat.

As for Crew, I'm all for it, but I already use Your Starbound Crew, if crews were implemented, it could easily create a divide between those with the mod and those without. I'd use whichever was more fun, but I know how some can get.

What about, if your ship and other person's one are in same planet's orbit, with the airlock, you could jump to his ship to be painfully slayed by the defense turrets say Hai :casper:

In addition to some of the great ideas suggested early on, like a crew that does more than spout the same line every time they're spoken to, what I'd really like to see are dynamic/procedurally-generated missions that take place on board your ship. I actually tended to enjoy the bottle episodes in Star Trek, and I'd like to be able to recreate those kinds of shipboard adventures in Starbound. Whether it's about jury-rigging a repair for a critical system, ferreting out a spy or saboteur amongst your crew, or tracking down an insidious alien life form that has stowed away amongst your cargo, these kinds of experiences would make your ship more than a mobile base of operations - it'd feel like a true home, one that needs care and maintenance to reach its full potential.

I would like to have the ability to interact with other ships.
Also I would like the ability to send a drone, or scan a planet to see what the planet has to offer. Does it have Floran life forms? Does it have a colony on it? Are there USCM radio transmissions?
A way to search for nearby city transmissions, for porting, and finding trading posts.
I too would enjoy landing my ship.
Also more equipment on ship for a medbay. I would like to be able to physically prepare myself better for a drop on a level 5 planet.

I would only like to make my own ship. If it means using a mod it's what I'll do. I just don't like having to use one ship because I wanted to be a Novakid or something. The ships that are there are not bad, but I still like the ones I build.

    Mech bay.
I'd love to build a mech and install weapons and other systems on it myself, custom build it!
(As in, choose legs, choose mid part, choose weapon, choose modules. Not as in build from blocks...)

A melee mech with a ton of speed could be especially fun when tearing down enemies. :D
Also I'd love the ability to call a mech down from orbit Warhammer 40k style: With a huge "WHAM!" and anyone under it turning into fine paste!

    Laboratory.
Extract chemicals from certain materials and mix them to get different types of syringes.
Hey the Apex are doing it! Why not me?!

Also maybe put extracted brains in little glass jars and use them for questionable purposes!
Superior ones would make for nice, unethical AI enhancers... inferior ones just creepy paper weights and delicious Floran cuisine. ;)

Basically what he planned was to have different stations on a ship, so that the crew (players) need to run different stations to use them.

There was no talk of dice rolls or even what you would need to do while on a station. (Play a minigame? Just sit there?)
    Just rough ideas.
(Also off-topic, but you can beat FTL maybe 90% of the time if you pick a good ship and plan your routes well. How hard it is to do so will vary, though.)

    1. A hydroponics bay. Can be used for small-scale farming, but chiefly provides an area wherein research can be conducted to improve plant seeds. If the plant and recipe systems are developed further (such the amount of health restored or a food's effects being partly dependent on the ingredients used) this can be the place to make improvements such as increasing plant yields or growth rates, reducing/increasing status effects, making hybrids used in higher tier recipes, or even making previously inedible plants palatable to other races at a small cost to their effects.

    2. A containment bay. Holds captured creatures. Coupled with a research station players can unlock uses for exotic creature parts or perhaps crossbreed creatures to create pets with a unique combination of abilities. Also useful if the game allows us to transport creatures from one planet to another to seed with specific species.

    3. Customizable interiors. I'm not sure how it is right now, but being able to dedicate more internal space to specific rooms would be desirable. For example, if I ever get a huge vessel I'd like to try constructing a mini artificial biome aboard to wander in even if I have to give up some living space.

    4. About crews: They should be recruitable from all inhabited friendly settlements. It might not be popular, but I'd love to have them require a food upkeep as well.

    5. About landing: The ship can land on a planet's surface when it is smaller, but at larger sizes the player must rely on either teleporters or shuttles to get down. The former is used for personnel transport while the latter (which also requires a hangar) is largely used whenever the player expects to do stuff such as transporting heavy cargo in bulk.

    On this note.
I would love for ships to have non-linear upgrades as well as modular room placement.

So you might raise resorces to add an additional labratory, med bay or armory. Then be able to place it where you like on the ship where you please.
    [IMG] [IMG]
As well as being given the option to place doorways or use the rooms to extend on others.
( Though I believe there is already a mod that does something like this. )

This would be great and I have actually thought about this a lot, as well as how it might be implemented.
I want to work on it as a mod after my current mod is done~ Hopefully that wont be too far away. o u o
But it would be great to have an unlockable mechanical workshop room which lets you create vehicles; the room beginning with a single workstation for making basic vehicles, then growing as you add other various workstations into the room.

This has probably been said by someone here already, but I would love for the ships to be much more modular than they seemed to be.
It seems like they're going to have a linear upgrade pattern, such as Level 2 adds specific room in specific place.
I would love it if I could purchase a module, such as a sleeping quarters (or more accessible, a '4x6' blank slate room), and then install the expanding room in whatever spot (or even a set spot of locations) onto my ship.

Things I'd like from ships - stuff will have been said before.

Ship modding. Not just modular, and not just make your own. I want both. I want to be able to start with my small shuttle and end up with a capital ship, teeming with life. Think the size of an Imperial Star Destroyer. I want to be able to bolt on bits of tech that will make rooms come to life. I want a proper space to be able to make oxygen from plants.

Ship crew. It's been said enough on it. I want it.

Better inventory management in a ship. I want to be able to sort and store materials/weapons/etc much more efficiently and quickly. I want a minerals deposit, for storing all the various blocks, and ways of creating them on mass - matter conversion. So, if I want to make bricks or permacrete or the like - I can make it to create my own cities with. So I can create lots of things, without needing to be on the ship waiting for all the transforms to finish.

Planet scanning abilities - not just being able to work out what's on the surface, and what minerals are there, but also developing things like minimap technology.

Planet altering abilities, from levelling terrain to coring a planet.

More beam up/beam down options. Improving with technology. Different ways of branching out the research, for improving placements on the surface, or number of beam spots to being able to increase the depth you can beam up from and back down to.

Being able to upgrade ships to be able to scoop suns for fuel.

Mining machines that can be automated. Different scaling on them too, from small precise function to world devouring.

Space station docking and creation. I want to be able to build orbital platforms that I can dock my giant cap-ship with and refuel/restock.

Environmental issues with creating large ships. Having to provide them with sustainable O2 for example. I.E. finding tech that will recycle air for a given space. Using plants to create oxygen and food. Having crew who can harvest the plants and so on. When you get into that grand a scale, the game presents new challenges from ships.

A warp drive, to make travel take less fuel.
A better map system, with the ability to bookmark and name planets.
The ability to activate PvP in it and die in it.
    A brig.
    A name.
More thrusters, so my ship doesn't end up flying of into space because it only has thrusters in two directions.
I'll post how I think ship upgrade should work later.

definitely a crew. makes it more personal; and like the idea of specialised rooms too. maybe make them so you can dump in projects and that will build over time, ie a "special item" that takes large amounts of resources to make using the "certain room" and it will build over time, and u can dump resources in to speed it up, or effect the quality of the final build... that probably makes no sense. maybe u could hire different crew members with different skills that make the item, and also effect the quality, like a lab assistant.

To not feel alone in this vast universe.

A crew, NPC party members for you know, away missions.

Also modular customizeable ships, not the individual block building, but getting to "design" the ship sort of out of parts, various models for bridges, cargobays, engine rooms, ship color, guns ect.

I definitely want a crew, although, I'd really like it to be customizable. I want a full crew of avians!

Interactive crew/army (Pilots, Guards, Mercenaries, etc): Yes please...
More ship customization (Colors, Parts; Unique): Yes please...
Ability to land with the ship and take off (And crash land, if bad pilots or damaged ship): Yes please...

Those things would open up to a lot of different possibilities...
