What do you think about the Tier System ? (The Sandbox is no Sandbox)

In the most current update I have never ever had to cheat to beat the bosses. I mean only did the ufo and robot but did not cheat. Just need the proper gear.

You aren't making suggestions. You are talking about features you'd like with no context around them.

    I WANT ICE CREAM NAO.

Do I have the money? Is there a place near me? What flavor? etc.

edit* Also, way to ignore the other things I brought up.

I always hated the "boss spawning" thing in all games that it was in... It took away a huge deal of the immersion, and I really hope that they will make the bosses parts of quests in the future (except for the first one then) rather than player-made/summoned things.

I like the current tier system, but there needs to be more threat variation per sector... The "threat level" should not be bound to level anymore, but rather to difficulty, so each sector could have planets with a level ranging from 1 to 10, giving a rough indication of the difficulty level for the average player in that specific sector. I think this would work perfectly.

    Bless you, Nero.
You're one of the few people I know that actually understands that Tier X isn't Sector 4, but the endgame after all other tiers are complete.

I'm assuming you don't mind the first one because you actually have a reason to summon the UFO in the form of the quest?
If that's why, you should be happy once they implement the full quest system as I'm sure there's going to be good/logical reasons to build a robot, lure a bone dragon, etc etc.
The quests aren't going to just stop after Sector Alpha in full release.

Personally, I would prefer it to be like terraria was, as you get the materials, the schematic opens up in crafting. Bosses would drop materials and items that you need to craft some of the stuff, but I don't like that even if I have the materials I need to make something, I cant until I beat the boss.

It also makes boss fights so unsatisfying. They drop one item. I loved in terraia how bosses just exploded in loot.

Dont get me wrong when I say i want it to be like terraria, I want this game to move out of its shadow. I already feel like we took a step backwards towards it with the new level system rewarding digging more than planet exploring. But this is one area where I feel terraria nailed it, and you cant really improve upon it. I mean seriously, I fight and kill a ufo and all I get is one molten core? I should be able to get tons of things out of the wreckage, one being that awesome laser! Speaking of, where are all the lasers!! How can we be in space and not have friggin lasers?! :)

Great post. Imagine if planets actually had geothermal properties requiring you to craft some kind of suit that would allow you to survive the greater pressures down below. I think that would make more sense and also make returning to planets more interesting, as you said.

Unlike terraria this game is still in beta, where terraria has years of updates under its belt, just saying =D. I love the exploding loot idea, agree totally! and even though we are in space, we are out in the middle of nowhere with no fuel, so it makes sense that some random planet wouldn't have mobs carrying laser's =D

Thankfully, you didnt say it with any malice like most of the "its beta" crew, so ill cut you some slack. But im going to explain anyway.

The point of beta is to play the game, report bugs, and express concerns, in the hope that things can be improved. If all of us just sat here, and never spoke up because its beta, nothing would get changed. Yet every time someone does express a concern(and im not talking about people crying over wipes, the fact that fps drops, or so and so feature isnt in the game), especially if said concern goes against what these guys want, you get the rabble, rabble, rabble, ITS BETA!, you should quit playing crew out in full force.

Again, by no means am I pointing this at you nightowl, again, there was no malace in your post. It was just the catalyst for me to express my feelings on this subject.

My frustration with the tier system has somewhat already been expressed, namely the bosses magically allowing you to craft more stuff. The reason this is so frustrating to me is two-fold:

First, it breaks immersion, especially when it's a repeated pattern and becomes routine.

Secondly, it means I have to be good at fighting things before I can build a refinery. Maybe I don't want to fight things. Maybe I'd like to be a peaceful explorer and miner, or a trader. I'm sure eventually content will be added to allow for those sorts of play-styles, but so long as the bosses block not just sectors but keep me from having ideas (hey, that UFO was silver....SILVER ARMOR, OF COURSE! ...also refineries for reasons) it means that a trader or explorer is going to HAVE to fight them just to proceed. It means that every character will have to tackle things ultimately in a martial fashion, and to me that's a shame.

Sorry, I forgot the rule where we are supposed to present complete concepts here, with the code and graphics attached.

But let me take a deep breath or smoke or whatever and let me think...

Why not having BOTH: A galactical market that can be accessed by one of those thousand of computers that you can find everywhere, AND the local merchants that are already there? And of course the currency would be pixels, and trade is the only way to get them, by selling stuff (and, maybe, but not as randomly and abundant as right now, as treasure). At the same time we end the madness of hunting with special weapons and get bones and meat and leather and horns and teeth and eyes from our beloved monsters no matter how we slay them.

And of course it could be BOTH, NPCs in the galaxy and from spawners. You could at least pay for their service (or spawn) once, or you could build living spaces like you did in terraria. Or you could hit them with some sort of brainsucker-Cannon and make them your zombie-slaves. Or wear your wedding dress, I found one recently, and hit the flirt button. I guess equipping them would really blow up memory usage. It would be nice, but maybe you could instead upgrade them.

A pro pos memory: I guess, the whole settlement stuff would either be shallow or just too much, so I guess it could only happen on one single planet, like your home.

So. Mercenary. Honestly did not really think about it when I wrote it down, but there are settlements with people in it that are constantly attacked. There are already thieves and rebels and monsters who are a constant danger. There are prime targets like glitch kings or mini bosses. I think I'm changing mercenary into headhunter, and that kind of stuff is in every game of this kind since 1783.

Well, and of course the number of trades lets you progress, since you are earning pixels that, for example, let you buy spacefuel without mining for hours. Or let you buy the home planet I was talking about earlier. Or let you buy blueprints. It's really not that spectacular.

And just think real life. How does charming people help you progress? I guess since I have the day off tomorrow I'm going to try that out right now, in my favorite bar, and I tell you tomorrow:poptop:

The tier 4+ upgrades don't require pixels because its not complete.

It's funny, I was pondering this sort of thing the other night.

I don't necessarily have an issue with the current setup, but I guess I was expecting something more spontaneous and random.
Like having really tough planets next to easier ones, and letting the player forge their own path accordingly through the intergalactic maze.

This has nothing to do with the re-balance patch that made all planets in a given sector the same level. If anything what I'm referring to would be the removal of the sectors all together.

But this system is fine as is.

A sandbox and true exploration mode would be nice. I wish you had to scan a planet before it would tell you info about the planet (the biome shouldn't be disclosed, but the temp, humidity, circumference/diameter, etc should). Threat level wouldn't be calculated until you had scanned creatures on the planet, and then it would be estimated based on the creatures you had successfully scanned (with a percentage of creatures scanned to indicate how accurate the threat level is).

    I've
been hoping the devs implement a scanning mechanism as well , would make the game far more interesting from an exploration point of view :)

The only reason why it feels this way is because it's still very early in the beta. There's honestly not much to do. I guarantee once it's finished it won't get old for a loooooooooooooooooooong time.

We've kind of got one in the form of Investigating things with "N", but I hope that eventually an investigation of certain objects (Like the Avian symbol in most altars, the one with the giant eye) will give our races' assessment of Avian culture through their eyes.
Like how investigating is already, but it adds codex entries and such.

  20. Archer

    Archer Spaceman Spiff

He means planet scanning for details, not investigating.

This idea of planetary scans (that would take some time) could be kinda neat actually, especially if it could be upgraded over time, showing more stats, with the final tier of it showing ore percentages on planets after a scan (shouldn't be too easy to get).
