There are many things I love about this game in the short time that I've played it but here are a few:

    Soundtrack,
    Art style,
    All the randomization,
Custom ship I can hang in with my friends AND travel with them inside of it,
    Combat,
    Crafting,
    Races(I hope they get perks),
    Villagers/Villages that serve a purpose,
    Challenging dungeons/bosses,
Modability(10x this, I don't need to decompile the game just to mod it!)
    Co-op co-op co-op!
    Environmental changes,

In short, I love it all. I only got to play 30 hours before there was a big patch but I'm working on getting it downloaded! I don't care if there are birds bombing you from the sky! I will consider it an extra challenge! I really want a pet turtle too... Also, just ignore all the haters guys, Some people don't realize the reality of a developmental build, I look forward to progress in whatever shape or form it dons!

Oh yes, I've never seen a team push out updates as fast as CF does, Kudos on them!

I haven't played much, and probably won't for the rest of the first stage. But from the few hours I have played, the aesthetics and atmosphere are probably my picks.

I love the concept of different races, space travel, and the potential to have a two dimensional sandbox game that allows for a variety of different experiences every time you land on a planet. I see a lot of potential in the designs they have, and I'd love to see it grow and evolve with time. I also admit that I have a soft spot for the Hylotl.

    Oh wait.

In all seriousness, the atmosphere. Of course it's best when you first start, but the game has an amazing, mysterious atmosphere, and the beautiful music really helps with it.

I'm not sure what it is exactly but the ''Replayability'' or the fact that I can play it for hours and hours and always have a ''Job'' to do such as making a house, crafting armor, fighting bosses or whatever it is.. I just keep on playing and playing <3

    1. Modding (I don't use any during beta, how silly, but I love that the groundwork is laid).
    2. Desert planets (holy crap sand avalanches and all that ore).
    3. Character customization (it's totally good and goes from rolling a character all the way to deciding techs).
    4. Ships!

The exploration side of space games. Go where you want in this massive universe, go anywhere, explore, hang out on your ship. Dial up your buddies and hang out on their ship.

It's just a very chill, relaxing, and lovely game.

.... but the birds. Never relax on the surface.

THE MUSIC! :D The first thing I did was sit at the menu and listen. The music is beautifully put together, and both expressive and inspiring. I also love the magnifying glass tool, as you can get your character's race's perspective on other race's technologies and the world around them. The random villages and settlements are awesome, too. I've found a Glitch city in a desert (they were quite friendly), an Apex testing facility on a jungle planet (they were defensive, but forgiving), and a Human Penal Colony on a different desert (the inmates had taken over, and they shot on sight D:).

The game just feels really inspired, and has a great depth of soul to it in the sense that it really feels like someone's labor of love. That combined with some of the best video game music I've heard in years, this is hands-down going to be one of my all-time favorite games, assuming the Beta goes well.

Such awesome replies. And I thought of something else I love... that feeling when you find the perfect planet to make a base on, that feeling of being home. (Or maybe that's just me ).

Also, all the little details. How the trees sway when you start chopping them down. How some of the monsters, when they see you, just "threaten" and growl and don't charge you yet. How the lighting looks at night. How the music sounds underwater. Just so many cool little effects that help give Starbound that flavor it has. :D

    This.

There's a great sense of wandering when you're hopping from planet to planet, and when you DO find that lovely slice, there's a nice tone of homecoming in a sense. In the first patch I played, I found a lovely forest planet with blue dirt and teal-leaved silver birch trees (it felt perfect for a land-based Hylotl... that, and it was really pretty :3). The first thing I did when I landed was move into an abandoned Apex shack just to the right the beam-down point. The area was super-hilly, so instead of leveling the land to make farms, I used the building's roof as a terrace, and gradually started making covered bridges over all the different valleys, and put other farm plots on top of those (had some platforms on the support pillars to help get up and down from them). It was always a nice breath of fresh air each time I had to (or wanted to) return to the planet for whatever reason (usually food and bandages... SO many farms ).

And may I also say, the ability to "build" villagers and guards is wonderfully thought out. It's absolutely amazing how much life a few "familiar" faces bring to an already vibrant world. To me, this game drips with that child-like wonder and imagination of make-believe and exploration that (at least for myself) made childhood so wonderful. Perhaps that's part and parcel to the game's charm and appeal?

Edited in: I almost forgot! The effect you get where the music fades away while you're digging deep beneath a planet's crust, and is gradually replaced with eerie cave atmospheric sounds is something I love. I always feel isolated and paranoid that just around the corner, there's going to be some giant tunnel-dwelling monster digging around. That, and the sound effect gives a palpable feeling of the pressure felt from being deep beneath tons of stone and dirt. It really makes mining for ores super-interesting... not to mention the random installations and biomes you can find underground. :)

I'm digging way deep in the planet I'm on now, and every time a monster attacks and I'm not expecting it, I jump SO hard because of the near-silence otherwise. Keeps me on my toes, haha!

Yes! :speechless: Scariest part of the game is digging in the dark, and suddenly breaking through into an unlit cave and being yelled at by a monster. I jump every time.
