What do we want in a beta?

?

What should the beta look like?

  1. Large Beta (implement as much as possible, think Minecraft)

I thought I would ask this question because I think it's worth asking.

If you have to pre-order the game to play the beta, it's pretty obvious that all of the features working should be available.

Minecraft didn't have a large beta, did it? Or am I wrong?

Try not to play any EA Games then. Thankfully, Chucklefish is nowhere near being EA.

That said though, there's been so much speculation about the state of the beta, that I think the best course of action towards obtaining one should simply be to ignore it and go on having fun on the forums. I mean, it'll come in time right? So why not enjoy the ride?

i'd vote for no beta, because doing a Minecraft style release prolongs things and makes the final release seem massively unimportant unless it releases with a HUGE amount of brand new content. and with the roadmap up finally the devs seem to be just applying finishing touches and finishing up a few things like server stuff and vehicles. i'm sure people will disagree with me but i feel like Starbound needs to not be released before its finely polished and rather than a trickle of new stuff as we go towards a release we get one release that implodes everyone's brains with awesomeness.

Either that or a very limited beta.

and if you Limit the "Beta" it will be a Demo and not a beta :) betas are suppose to help the Devs sqush out the few buggs left hopefully so if any Beta it should basicly be most of the game maybe 1-2 thing left to implement and thats it

No , it hasn't. It WAS a large beta for a long period of its existence )))

I never payed for a Triple A game to have access to the beta, they were all free. And that kind of beta are more like demos.

    That reminded me of this:

    :D
But now that you guys said that, I have to agree. You're right.

I bet they'll just make the beta the game, bugs and all.

And then we will CRUSH them all!

I've seen this in many other threads. People seem to be mixing up betas with demos. Demos are meant to show of a game's core features, as some sort of a "try before you buy". That is not a beta.

The poll options are very arbitrary and frankly useless.

Still I feel a beta is more than necessary to work out the balance and player progression.

All features important for either should be finished save for polishing and bughunting.

I don't care. As long as it's not like the Edge of Space beta where they put in a few features for a while, then take them out and put in a few different features to test. That just seems dumb in many ways imo.

Enough content to get our money's worth and keep us occupied, but still leave stuff for the final release.

Not any beta I'v played, lol. I'd just rather have features put in with one another than have some put in, taken out then different ones put in.

  17. I think I'd actually like the beta to be singleplayer only.
We'll have it a lot sooner if they don't have to include server stuff, and I'd honestly like to save the multiplayer experience for the actual release.

It's a beta, they can throw anything they want in here that they need tested.

If a beta is ever released, it should be in the form of serial keys. And everyone who is logged on has a 50/50 chance of getting one of these keys. In-game, there could be a "Donate Now!" button, so Chucklefish can hopefully finish the game sooner, and some of them won't have to work two seperate jobs.

I don't think it would be a good idea, since little to no people would get a key, and well, everyone will want the beta.
