Puns aside, this could be something to take to the suggestions forum actually, along with wind. Obviously we're not asking the poor Devs to pile MORE stuff on their plate right now, but in the long-run, or a mod perhaps.

Wind- Have a little meter (Or maybe a bit of tech you have to research) that tells you the direction and speed of hte wind on a planet. Like Wind: NE 45MPH (Or Kilometers per hour, or knots you get the general picture though.) This would mean the wind is blowing "down (Since it's a 2d game)" on the planet and pushing west. With this bit of tech on hand, you could then take into account wind direction and power, and hang around the surface for awhile, and figure out how frequenty the wind changes direction etc (Seeing as I'd imagine som eplanets will have radical weather patterns.)

Fire- Fire spreads based on wind, if no wind is present, it will slowly spread after checking the surrounding area for any burnable material. (Not sure how the devs are coding things to be perfectly honest, but "burnable" could be a flag that each blocktype is given.) Then it'd spread itself to those blocks slowly but surely, seeing as it has no wind to really whip it about.

Could be an interesting mechanic, both to play around with, and to have thrown against you if NPCs raid your homeworld, they take the wind into account and set a fire so that it spreads and hits the main part of your base. (This could be good for a forest world etc.)

It really hasn't came up at all. o=o I'd be interested to see how fire would work in the game though. Though I don't think there'll be much fire at release. As Regal Kain said, maybe take it to suggestions. I highly doubt they'll be adding anything else in for launch but I'm sure they'll try to add it in at a later date.

  6. I don't really understand the point of fire other than a quick way to grief. I'd rather just clear a forest by cutting down the trees and getting wood as I go along. That being said, if they do add fire, I hope the fire mechanics are smarter than Minecrafts.

    Humans are in space

    Humans require oxygen

Therefore wherever humans are fire can also be. There was a fire for example on the Mir space station. There are a few points of consideration regarding fire in space. Firstly oxygen storage systems need to be kept safe, see apollo 1's pure oxygen environment leading to the fire and death of crew. Also in 0g, fire doesn't spread, it just balls up, consumes the resources it can get at and then goes out. However if you have a ventilation system, or are simulating gravity (via a sci-fi means or centrifugal force), then that doesn't mater and a fire can be just as dangerous as on earth. The space shuttle, and ISS all have smoke detectors built into the ventilation system for this reason.

All the instances you gave were in oxygen. Fire requires oxygen. There is clearly no air on the surface of that moon because they are wearing space suits to breathe. What part of that don't you understand?
