I think soft core is too forgiving and medium core is too harsh. Need some middle ground, like your gear becomes damaged and requires repairs and possibly one or two pieces break completely. This way you can still recover your stuff, but there's a penalty.

There's something to be said for cloning in a sci fi environment. It gives a nice in-character reason for coming back to life.

I like midcore when I'm rping and want my char to drop items and weapons for people to pick up.

I'd have to go soft core for starters. If there is anything I loath when I'm working on stuff in say Minecraft, it's being blown up and have to waste my time running in a full sprint back before everything disappears. I just consider it tedious and frustrating when I lose a considerable amount of work because of total bs spawning or when I'm in the middle of finding stuff. Maybe after I get used to the game I'd swap it to medium core, maybe, but building games and losing everything just never sat well with me.

I wonder what the despawn time will be in StarBound...

Yet I enjoy the hell out of Dark Souls, but apples to oranges that game isn't about finding things to build my personal dream place.

Medium for me. I think having your items drop where you died requiring you to retrieve them makes things a bit more interesting. This assumes of course that all of your carried items will be able to be recovered at the point of your demise either strewn about or by looting your corpse.

I would find it a bit too frustrating on Hard core to simply die and that's the end.

It would also depend somewhat on if I'm playing solo or with friends. I will only be playing multiplayer with friends whom I trust anyway so I don't really worry about them stealing my items if I die.

I don't like a Soft mode where you don't even drop items upon death because it almost completely negates the concept of dying. Even with a monetary expense, it would be mostly insignificant to die.
