What are your favourite Sci-fi melee weapons?

This is a Sniper Rifle i designed, it is a magnetic propelled 50 cal sniper rifle comes with four different types of ammunition as displayed in the drawing, but obviously this would allow for 4 variations of the gun to be made, shooting standard bullet projectile, another shooting red laser, green laser and an explosive round, obviously clip size would be pointless but of course, the energy requirement could be set to five shots before all energy is depleted requiring a cool down period before all five shots could be fired again this could be changed for each type of round meaning the more powerful rounds would deplete quicker to the point of only being able to shoot a single round but that single round would be the sample damage of a rocket launcher.

Now, obviously we need one thing fo sho. Ion blaster weaponry. Simple to make, simple to use. And very, VERY effective.

Yep. Ions of the most dangerous sort can easily destabalise. Which is why it would be short range at most, like the brain extractor.

Future or not, Melee refers to close combat, not ranged.

And, of course, a thruster attached to your hands, for that extra-smokin' knockback punch!

Here's hoping at least some of the devs are fans of the most awesome sci-fi series ever produced and feel like adding a Farscape homage.

 

Make some sort of paper fan weapon. Higher tiers of it could look friggin epic

 

Thinking back on it though... Just because something isn't designed for something specific doesn't mean it can't do the job, even partially.
Sure, it might not be the most efficient thing since it wasn't designed for that, alas.

But here's the thing, if someone pick up a stick, and for some reason swings it in someone's face what just happened?
The stick, while a crude object, turned into a melee weapon while it's primary use was... Being a stick, being used as a fuel source, or crafting purpose. Or a basic thing like a rock. You can both use it short range or even throw it, and it wasn't even a weapon in the first place.
That chair there. It's common sense to say it's use is too sit on it. Now pick it up and bash someone with it. There, you made a melee weapon out of your chair.

And this can apply to a lot of things, even weapons themselves.

Here's a knife. You'd say it's a short range range melee weapon, because it's a short blade, right. But what if I told you that this knife... Can be thrown.
Yes. Thrown. If you're lucky or trained enough, it would also just end up stuck in that wall.
So, is it still a melee weapon? Yes, but not only.

A gun is a shooting device, yes? Well, you can stil hit things with it, can you not? In the right place, it might even prove to be dang efficient. Still it's a range weapon.

So it's not far fetched to say your bow, or your ion blaster for that matter, future or not, are melee weapons to an extent.
They're gonna suck at it, because they weren't designed for that, but they definitively are.
It's your job as an inovator/inventor to put blades, pointy ends or whatever that could enhance it's potential without ruining the balance, etc.
With that in mind, you can change a shield, that is moslty defensive into a pointy shield which you can use to simingly hurt more with it.
Now with SciFi, you could come up with hundreds of things.

If all that did not convince you, then just consider this:
You can still use your bow on short range. That's not melee, but shooting an arrow on short distance is enough to destabalise the oponent, or more. It does the job.

Anyway what I wouldn't mind seeing is something to have more of.

beam swords, especially some 1 handed variants to go along with the dual beam one we already have.

If not some type of discus, after all it does take a lot of force to throw effectively.

Whips, maybe an electric or plasma one.

I like to see more beam weapons as I have said; well melee wise. claws, spear, and maybe an axe. After all it could be a processor that controls the shape of plasma or some kind of unit similar at the tip by which the beam/energy comes out of.

Maybe make a 2 handed shield that doubles as a bash weapon. Thinking Ragnorok Online sorta. Crusader to be exact, or at least similar. But basically one large enough to attack with.
