    Exexcol
    exploration and exploitation colony
    mk2 (design prototype)
This is basic layout of standard installation on majority of worlds worthy of staying for a while. Of course, this is just a conjecture, but exexcol mk3 (production prototype) will still most probably look like this.

    1. Landing pad. This is the spot where visitors on this world are beamed from orbit. If possible, it will be made enclosed by walls and roof, but on this prototype model it is shown as barebones pad.

    2. Respawn room. With beds and/or other equipment required to set spawn point, this is where visitors appear after unfortunate cases. Standard design includes an optional small to medium balcony, especially good idea if the planet is pretty safe and the view is nice.

    3. Visitors hall. Large decorated room, appearance of which ideally should describe the purpose of this colony. For example, if the planet is rich in uranium, then background of the room should be filled by radiation warning signs, and glowy (but safe) stuff is very welcome as a decoration.

    4. Roof decorations. Could be completely custom for each specific exexcol, but usually feature a flagpole with a banner or some other meaning of declaring an owner of this installation.

    5. Central stairway. Could be swapped for a vertical ladder, depends on budget and preferences of installation owner.

    6. Utility rooms. First one, marked by "6" number, is always a medbay. Others depend on preferences of installation other, budget and necessity.

Note: height of the "tower" (utility rooms, connected by the central stairway) is flexible and depends on aforementioned factors.

    7. Entrance/exit doors. Located above ground level in case of whatever. Defensive measures are not a part of this standard design, because no current information about their possibilities are available, but they do go somewhere here. Outside stairs are retractable, if possible.

    8. Technical floor. Electrical generators and other necessary support machinery are located here.

Note: technical floor (and the whole tower) is built on stilts. Height of these stilts could vary very much, depending on surface conditions.

    9. Underground hall. Some equipment related to mining and subterranean exploration could be stored here. Notice that the door between sectors 9 and 11 is fortified, with possible defensive measures applied somewhere nearby, around "11" mark.

    10. Mining storage. Not exactly "mining only", this structure is filled by containers with cargo of varied value. Usually this storage contains only local goods, although one or more layers of this sector may be specified for storage of imported goods. Storage is scalable both horizontally (longer rooms) and vertically (more floors). Usually items of similar type are contained on one level.

Note: subterranean part of this installation may be flipped horizontally on owner's whim. So, mining storage may be not at right from an underground hall, not at left as it is shown.

    11. Mine entrance. This small room is technically not a part of exexcol standard design, and it is not necessarily protected from hostile spawn by construction of artificial background, but usually it is. Protection of mining shafts is completely optional, depends on budget, local underground fauna and other factors.

My homeworld will probably start as one of exexcols and then evolve into something large and awesome but still very practical. I am not against decorations, actually I like them, but they are secondary, utility and ease of use are more important.

Also there is a large difference between something bland and something ascetic but cool. In minecraft terms: bland — cobblestone and dirt with torches on walls; ascetic but cool — stone bricks with jack-o-lanterns in floor and/or ceiling.

I see a lot of underground facility type layouts.

I shall build a sky fortress. Unless they spawn something like those damn Wyverns, my least favorite enemy to kill in Terraria.

I actually wouldn't be surprised that if in some worlds creatures from the sky can spawn but in others they don't.
The worlds ARE a bit random.

Mine will consist of a vertical main trunk made of solid gold about 50 stories tall, with balconies on each side of every fifth story. It is surrounded by little floating rooms made of silver that can only be accessed by jumping from one of the balconies. Some of the floating rooms will in turn have balconies used to jump to other rooms. This will ward off burglars, which of course probably won't even exist in the game, as well as giving me a fun little challenge whenever I want to access my storage closets.

Also, my most prized possessions will be kept at the end of a deadly, hour-long obstacle course in the basement. The obstacle course, which is made mostly of diamond platforms,
will consist of many parkour challenges such as leaps over acid and lava (if those are available and portable in the game), and several puzzles which could take the average mind weeks to solve. Of course, once you reach the end (which is completely hidden from view and can only be opened by a changing a complex series of switches and levers to the correct positions), you must have the key to open the Inner Sanctum. The key happens to be hidden 12 miles away from my base, and securely guarded.

Even if it takes longer than 30 minutes to build, it'll be worth it.

Nah it's supposed to be the other way around. Put the shield generator on the forest moon protecting the mega fortress...

  20. I'm thinking of building a bunker similar to a concept I've once used in Terraria.

The concept used in Terraria was:
