I saw someone suggest a space mall and my first reaction was, why not have space mail? Think about it. You build and establish a nice headquarters to suit your future exploits and whatever shenanigans you plan to endeavor in. You walk outside and all of the sudden a mailman (or mail penguin, whatever works, ya know?) drops by and delivers a letter from one of your buddies. It looks like he's hosting a server and wants you to come and help him out! You grab your gravity gun and head on over to your friends server to reply to your friend's summons and you are greeted by one friend and several others. And just like that, you have yourself a small squad of space pirates up to no good. I must say, a home is not complete if it has no mailbox, be it a small red mailbox or something more creative like a penguin shaped mailbox. The same goes for your headquarters and it opens a world of possibilities. Perhaps an npc near by would like your help? Maybe you haven't visited him in a while and he has a bit of info to share with you? What if a bounty has been offered for the capture of a squad of rouge space pirate penguins (see a pattern yet? )? Maybe you decide to subscribe to the local galactic newspaper, rich with information on neighboring planets and what they can offer you? Oh my, look at the date on this letter, Christmas is tomorrow! Wait a minute, this isn't a letter, its an invitation! The penguins next door are having a party tomorrow and they want you to stop by, and we all know how wild penguin Christmas parties are! A mail system opens a world of possibility, a portal of knowledge and awareness including quests such as jobs and bounties to fulfill, hosted and ongoing special events such as holiday events and places yet to be explored that contain items of great significance. It could even be used to broadcast contests or events going on in the forums, minor updates, polls, or even be used for feedback. I must say, my primary concern is that, considering that Starbound takes place in a world of serious technological advances, physical mail would be replaced by electronic mail. Granted, electronic mail is convenient, its not the same than receiving a physical letter. Tell me, what gets the biggest reaction out of you? A piece of text sent to you to penguine_lover@welovepenguins.com or a letter sent to YOU, with your name on it, not an electronic entity. Not to mention that if mail is handled electronically and delivered to you via a monitor, mail penguins across the galaxy would be unemployed. Think about the penguins for God's sake!
As a courier service this might also be highly useful, perhaps facilitating some sort of inter-player trade, or maybe for delivering gifts. For some reason this reminds me of Animal Crossing, which, although its settings and themes are different, shares a lot in common with Starbound.
Yeah! With corporations being established left and right, might as well throw in a mail order system. You know, get a catalog, send an order for a fancy new something, and get a package in a couple of hours
this is a good idea. it could be a way to transport secret weapons that are illeagal, as well! (assuming they exsist.)
My contribution to this thread is: Could there be two seperate kinds of mail transport? Electronic: Messages Physical: Items I liek the penguin mailmen 10 Pootis/ 11.6 Pootis
