    hello all :D

it has been a fair while since i was a regular forum lurker and poster, took a hiatus from said forum and game because work constraints and women lol oh and i bought a star wars lego set lol.....

anyway after coming back into Starbound i was floored with what has come out so far, Outposts, jump gates, run-down starter ship, Ai, took me about 3/4 hrs to figure out where the *bleep* core fragments were, also didnt know what they even looked like.

im highly impressed with nightly builds even though unstable but finally i get to see more content! Kudos Chucklefish glad i took a break to come back to more content!

Sounds like we have to vocalize a few things some more. The AI tells you some stuff (I thiiiink it tells you the location of the core fragments) but we quickly forget what it said :p.

Having just played a new character from scratch on nightly a couple of days ago - the AI doesn't tell you. It's the quest reward screen for one of the later beginning quests that mentions the core fragments being "deep below" or something like that.
Might be a good idea to have the AI tell you... Also, I think the name is pretty much a dead giveaway. You'd expect to find core fragments near the planet's core, right...?

Well, in fairness I kind've envisioned "core fragments" to refer to some kind of damaged power core in a surface location like a crash site, or perhaps from a spawned boss. A planet's "core" (Of a rocky world like Earth) is mostly iron and nickle, you can't chip "fragments off the core" you just get iron and nickle. And the "core" in Starbound is more like the upper mantle, so it'd be more accurate to call it olivine - and I can't envision why such a material would be a requirement of repairing a starship's reaction drive anyway.

If our ships ran on magic, sure, but Starbound advertises itself as science fiction (even if a very soft one), so i kind've expected the answer is be sci-fi rather than magic.

There's definitely a huge gap in the sci-fi lore of the game, perhaps they could make the AI so that it tells a bit more about the ship, or they could like.. Add another book you start with that explains the ins and outs of the ship in a techy way, like a blueprint or something.

I personally don't mind a bit of 'fake' science fiction because the game still has to be fun to play. Perhaps they could state that the core fragments belong to the core of something else : D

At first I thought penguin boss. Then the quest for the penguin boss didn't come up, which made me conclude that it was gathered, not dropped.

    Core fragments=planet core=dig down.

Sure enough, I found my core fragments, and enough ore to end my drought of tier 1 metals. I was a road warrior with a golden pickaxe!

Just a suggestion, there needs to be an option to speed up the text speech on the AI, It talks ridiculously slowly.

Playing as a Glitch, the AI told me it WAS all magic!

But yeah, I think some clarification on the Core Fragment idea would be useful.
From what the AI said I was thinking of fragments of some kind of power core. I even thought it might have been the item that the penguin boss dropped.

Anyway, even if it is explained that the Core Fragments we want are buried deep in the ground, there's a naming discrepancy.
What you dig up is called Core Fragment Ore, which would imply that you need to smelt it to produce actual Core Fragments, but no, when the AI is asking for 20 Core Fragments, it accepts 20 Core Fragment Ore.

Would it help the sci fi bit if we gave it a sci fi name, like Linttonium? :)
