We definitely should have an anthropod race. There should be a representation of Middle eastern/Greek cultures in the game, since there are representations of pretty much every other culture.
Revamped my race! http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/meet-the-cerpine-year-of-the-snake.8741/ Eat your heart out, Zaahir! (No offense to the creator of the thread. Your work is nice.)
It would be nice to have an Asian/Japanese styled race. I'd think such a race would be organ beings integrated with technology, in a cyberpunk metatype.
That one is in the development stage as far as I know. All I know is that they are aquatic. The point of what I was saying was that Japanese people want to be cyborgs, not sea-monsters.
That's still in development and subject to change. The description doesn't sound like a very good idea.
It's in their clothing and armor, and people on the latest stream said so. Sure, it's POSSIBLE to change it, but it's been this way since last year, and is a major part of the race.
Theres absolutely no way they would change the Hylotls' look, armour, weapons, and lore at this point.
Everyone else seems too like the idea. Also, all the information so far points towards the Hylotl's being aquatic oriental people. The name might change though.
Thanks for the replies. I'm glad to see the initial reaction of most members is to politely inform. Although nothing is absolutely certain until the game is released, that's tangent that doesn't belong in this thread. Sorry if I derailed the thread at all. I'm sure we can move back to the thread topic now.
Well, the way Dragons were originally depicted in Japanese and Chinese myths as river and sea-dwelling serpents. They didn't even breathe fire, but they were still pretty awesome imo. Think more like this character, a river spirit from the movie Spirited Away: It seems like the best possible Asian theme to me. Philosophy from ancient China and Japan talks about water all the time, like the Dao Dejing or Sun Tzu's Art of War. When I think of which element of magic a ninja would use, water is the first one I'd pick, followed by maybe wind or whatever else. Japanese gardens often feature a Koi pond. There are many poems about water from Asian countries, not quite so many from other historical nations. The Dragon Palace, home of the king of the sea, sits at the bottom of the ocean in Japanese mythology. I could go on, but I think you get the idea.
Water can reflect light and create illusions. The ripples and waves on the surface of water represent the forces of Yin and Yang, which are key in martial arts. Ice can be shaped into shurikens, snowy terrain can slow enemy movement, wet and/or icy terrain can cause foes to slip and fall, and water is also commonly the healing and/or poison element. Controlling wind would mostly be useful for allowing you to fly, using a kite. You can push people over or obstruct their view with debris, but pretty much every element can be used in ninja-like ways to some degree. I just feel like water is naturally suited to it.
Well no water just refracts light, and I don't know how you could create any illusions with water. To make Ice Shurkians you'd need to turn the water into a shurikan shape and then freeze it, which would take time. Furthermore healing isn't on the top of a ninjas agenda. Wind however can stifle or throw sound, you could create a pressure difference in the air and kill an enemy by sucking the air out of them, killing them from a distance silently. You could also slow an enemy down with huge gusts of wind and lift objects using it. How you ask? Well quite simply, if you control the air, you can increase the pressure around a particle by increasing the gasses around it. Until the pressure acting on it from all angles allows you to lift the object off the ground and then potentially send it at an enemy. All in all I'd say wind is the best element for a ninja. I'd say its far more suited. Water can let you do a lot of things sure, but wind is literally the air around you, it is EVERYWHERE. The most abundant 'element' on the planet, so you'd also have better access to it than you would water.
