Race Well, What's Missing?

Let me correct you in some points:

Scandinavia was NEVER part of medieval europe. It was just called "the north" hence the name Nothmans, normans etc.
The architecture was very different, not only in the techniques used to build the houses but also in their style. Also they never had castles, they had forts and that was when the viking age was ending.

Swords were a rarity and even those with swords were sooooo different from the swords of european warriors, they were made (ok only the rich ones could afford this) of PURE steel, something ALMOST (almost because they had it) impossible to create with medieval technology. This kind of steel was used only after the industrial revolution. (Google ulfverth sword). Also no polearms, just spears and axes.

Also armor was soooooo different, same with clothing! (And my race is not entirely medieval)

Their system of government... (If you can call it that) was based on many chieftains called Jarls and anyone with the balls, the courage and the money could be one. The concept was so strange to europeans that they couldn't translate it, they were just "counts" or "noble" for them but the "jarlendom" (i just invented that word :p) wouldn't pass to the next generation (unless it had the balls and the support of their village). The monarchy system and the king was introduced by christians after the conversion of the vikings (hence, they were not vikings anymore) and still the concept was so strange to them they couldn't come with a word for it, they had to use kong or koningr instead (can't remember the meaning but its close to king). Remember that only catholics could be kings (Divine right), that's why in orthodox countries the "king" was called "prince".

Also, horned helms is a myth created by christians to put fear in the heart of their followers and to demonize this people that was sacking their monasteries, cities and killing their people. (For food and land)

And by the way... You are contradicting yourself... Look at your own post, at the ms paint made mapamundi you made. What did you put on greenland? VIKINGS.

Sorry if i sound arrogant, it not my intention :( its just that's my heritage and a personal passion an i feel kinda offended (not really :p) you talk about my race without reading it. Read it please and give me some input :D

Again sorry if i sounded aggressive or arrogant. That's not my intention :(

All of your points rely on differences in time period. By the time the actual Viking period arrived, the influence of the southern parts of Europe had begun to have an enormous effect on their culture. Most of the things you describe (though perhaps not all) are actually from BEFORE the Viking expansion period, and are actually ancient Nordic/Scan. Personally, I find ancient Nordic/Scan to be dull. I mean no offense, this is just an issue of personal taste.

    Evidence: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vikings#Weapons_and_warfare
It says quite plainly: Sword, Shield, Spear, Axe, Bow. Just like the rest of Europe.
Armor worn was typically helmet and chain mail, just like the rest of Europe.
They wore furs and leather, just like where? The rest of Europe. I think I'm noticing a pattern.

Also, though they did have unique architecture, such as Long Houses, they did in fact build castles.
They were just made of wood. I don't see why the Glitch can't do that, it would still fit their theme.

The Norse lands had both "Kings" AND Jarls. These weren't actually political positions, they were more like generals who operated parallel to the actual system of government. The actual system was more like all the people were free individuals, but once in a while everyone would attend a gathering at which the Gothi (usually village elders) would mediate disputes and pass judgement. This was actually very similar to, well, almost every ancient tribal social structure. There isn't much that is unique or special about this, really.

Finally, as you can see here, the areas occupied by the Vikings (except Greenland) were a part of Europe.

I understand that they are near and dear to you. That's okay. We don't have to like all the same things! But I really don't want to argue about it anymore. This is my thread, and it's about my race. It is NOT your thread, about your race. Now drop it, and either post all of your nordic/scan knowledge in your own thread, or contribute something constructive for mine that is on-topic.

    ...

Now THIS is relevant. I wonder if Steampunk would fit into the Novakids? I mean, have you seen Wild Wild West?

    Trying to resist!!!!!
    Couldn't....
That is a modern map... About chainmail... well thats a money issue, they all couldn't afford them and about kings and jarls you are wrong, same about the council... That only happened in iceland and it was called the allthing, but you are right, its not the place for this! I apologize and get on-topic!

Now about your thread... Isn't a forum thread kinda created by the community also? And it seems this one have two different themes. How about creating a different one for the race? I totally like your idea of a spider race! (Its different but reminds me of the movie (not the series) "Lost in Space") and i would love to read all the info in one thread! Not having to look all the pages of this one seeking the info.

Now on the Steampunk topic, it would totally fit the novakids. I cant imagine them using plasma nor laser weapons nor futuristic machines because of the issue they have with tech and attention span.

LOL yeah, well, I'm not an expert on nordic/scan culture. I just watch New Scan Cook with Andreas Viestad, and laugh as he tries to sprinkle salt on the fish he's cooking at the top of tall mountains with the wind blowing it every which way.

A thread that was created by me, with a title and an OP that outlines the topic. The community obviously shapes much of the thread contents, but if they are off-topic then they need to make a new thread.

I know there is some variance between straight-Indian and straight-Greek which makes it seem like my concept isn't unified, but since the Mid-East is basically a fusion of both that's just what I've got to work with, here. I happen to think the unified flavor actually works really well together too, even if other people don't really see how their vision of Greece and India could ever mix.

Also, I do plan on posting a new thread when I've thought of a name and have all my ideas gathered together.

So does this mean you're changing the furniture to be more mid-eastern as well, since the current images are quite similar to the Apex furniture scheme? If so, you're up for a lot of work. Maybe we could play off each other like the Novakid/Andodyne did, sorta working together, but as rivals. It would at least be fun if not constructive.

I still think arthropods are missing from the game, but many varieties of snakes can burrow. That means the Cerpine are still potentially subterranean with a Mid-Eastern theme. That's 2/3 of what my thread says is missing, so I like it.

  9. Yes, I'm redoing a bunch of sprites, but not replacing all of them.
Their culture, as mentioned on my thread, will still be technological, but with a definite Arab theme.
Similar to Tatooine from Star Wars, only far less bland.

As for underground, I think they'll go underground, but not to a subterranean extent. Only for water or to get out of the sun.

Also, everyone who makes a race is my rival.

I know you're all about physical position with this, but what about these "cultures":

Bearskin caps, military caps, tricornes, feathered hats, top hats, tailcoats, blouses, corsets

Bowler/derby, cloche, tophat, beaver hat, fedora, trilby, flat caps, gatsby, homburg, porkpie
    potential steampunk material

(apex are more military to me, very european though)
riot visors, police caps, custodian helmets,

    toolazyforpic

    panama, sombrero
    [IMG]

pith helmets, tan suits, muskets and swords, riding boots and big gloves

also, what about russia? I don't really feel like the apex are very russian

Good feedback. I think a lot of these fall under Victorian era, or could be roll into that age. Since the Novakids are from the same time period and the culture was very much a part of the Eastern United States at the time (and Australia!) I think they are mostly covered.

The sombrero and other Hispanic garments will either be covered by Avians, or just part of the myriad of miscellaneous stuff. Things like this, and likely also tuxedos and such, will probably be crafted by humans, or by anyone.

Russia is technically a part of Asia. The particularly conspicuous pointed domes on top of Russian palaces are very similar to ones found in India or on top of Mosques in the Mid-East. They also used curved weapons, etc... Actually, Russia is basically like the colder climate version of the Mid-East, in some ways. I'd have to do more research to be sure, though.

To be honest, I think I know at least two sci-fi themes that are underrepresented (as in, not represented at all). We will probably have a standard SF style with Humans, and the Apex are another classical SF style, but there's no "smooth, sleek" SF design like for this ship (newgrounds link), or for the royal naboo spaceship (wookiepedia link), and there's no race that uses obviously-cybernetic materials with glowing circuits, that would look like the grid in Tron (example 1 (from a graphic designer), example 2 (screenshots from Tron 2.0)).
Those designs might even go together for the style of a race.

I actually entered an insect-like race into a contest once. Though me being me and not very artistic with PCs and such, I couldn't exactly get the best message through. It was like a dark-tannish mantis looking thing, hard-shelled. It had four arms and perfered spears. Maybe that could be the race your looking for?

Hylotl are themed after Feudal Asia and India is Asia so... Ya...

  17. DeadlyLuvdisc

    DeadlyLuvdisc Oxygen Tank

Technically the Mid-East is not an actual continent. Everything from Saudi Arabia all the way east to Japan is technically Asia, but somehow I doubt that the Hylotl will be running around wearing turbans and flying on magic science carpets.

Due to the culture and geographical proximity of Russia and India, they are often consider to be a toss up between Asia and the Mid-East. Indian Buddhism's influence over the Far-East and the Mongolian conquests influence on southern Russia were substantial, but really I think they are much more Mid-Eastern in flavor due to the influence that Greece brought to the East during the expansion of Alexander the Great.

As I'm mocking up these sprites, it has been hard to get the right balance between the cultures. What I'm really trying to go for is something like this: http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Paladin_(Tactics_Advance)?file=Ffta-h-paladin.jpg
I can't seem to get the robes right. They either end up in togas, or they look like they popped out of Disney's Aladdin. -sigh-
