I don't know if this has been suggested or not, but the idea i have is that when you discover a randomly generated gun or weapon, it would have a generic name like Pistol, Shotgun or Silenced Pistol, and you can take it to weapons research labs, and have your researchers figure out how to manufacture it. Then on your home planet you can build a weapons factory, and manufacture the weapon while having the choice to give the weapon a name, for example, my generic Pistol could be renamed Psycho-88 Pistol. Perhaps you could also mix and match parts from previously researched weapons, so you could manufacture variants of guns with silencers, laser sights, etc. EDIT: Another idea perhaps, you could make a weapon from scratch with various parts of other weapons researched, and maybe even build it pixel by pixel. And then you put a set amount of points into various categories of the gun's stats, or if you are on the easiest difficulty, modify the stats with no limitations ( But perhaps the weapon would be locked out of use if you switch to a higher difficulty, until you go back to the easiest difficulty ) It would also be cool to be able to use custom sounds for reloading and firing that you import into the game, then i can finally get to use my precious Mauser C96. Best... Handgun... EVAR. PERIOD.
This is not a bad idea. This would go over really well for player generated economies. With special weapons, custom builds etc forming the basis of a players economy. Why stop with weapons though? We could apply this to any items we get. Really we should include a potentially large an extensive player generated economy. The trick would be integrating it with NPC's.
Why not? Its a really good idea. Usually half the suggestions on the forums are kinda Meh, but this one is awesome!
I suggested a weapons modifications very similar to this a long while back (here) and I think its an excellent idea. It would add a lot to the game!
Actually, modification is only a part of my suggestion, my suggestion is mostly about mass production and naming randomly generated weapons.
