Weapons and gear... will we be able to modify them?

By that I mean things like attachments. I love how lighting will be dynamic and have lots to say in this game, and how if you want to explore, you will need your flashlight or other illumination tool.

What then, happens when, for instance, you run into monsters in your little dungeon crawl in near pitch-black conditions? Would it be possible for me to flip out, say, my assault rifle with a flashlight in it, to help me see in the dark?

What about things like a light source on my armor, ala the lamp on a marine's shoulder in Aliens? Or laser-dots for weapons to help aiming, or any other possible ways weapons and gear can be improved and/or altered from it's base use?

I've looked over the suggestion treads for some pages back but there did not seem to be any treads like this, so I'm making this one. I don't know if the devs have any plans for anything like this, or even want it in their game, so here it is.

    it's possible.

"Bartwe completed a bunch of additions to consumables to give them additional configurable affects. He’s moving onto a system for applying one item to another. This will give us things like dyes and repairing items."

There have already been weapon mods announced as being in the game, I'm fairly sure.

Well, you can DEFINITELY configure weapons with the use of mods, or the use of a mod that allows you to mod weapons in-game. However, I'm not sure whether you can modify guns, in vanilla, without the use of hacking.

  7. Yes, you can wield a weapon (Gun/Melee - doesn't matter) in one hand and a flashlight in another to help you see in the dark.
Weapons generally will work like this (This is an example) :
Hammer -> Hammer Modification which allows you to hit the ground with your hammer that creates a shockwave which will hurt your enemies
Rocket Launcher -> Rocket Launcher Modification which allows you to shoot X rockets at a time, rapid fire rockets and so on.

I hope that this post answered your concerns about the weaponry in Starbound :)

From what I've understood those features are already built into weapons you find, though.
I don't think you can just pick and choose them.

It'd take away the joy of finding crazy weapons.

  9. Makes sense though some modifiers would be cool in my opinion and I hope there will be some in the game, maybe not at launch but later :)

To be honest, I'd like the +1 type upgrade style that RPGs use. It adds some sort of risk for the greedy people who only want high level weapons. (By risk, I mean a chance that the weapon will be destroyed/Degraded in the process.)

This is from the August 4th, 2012 dev log post about projectile weapons. He goes on to say that all of these additions are only for weaponry and not the melee weapons. Giving you the sense that this is still a small bit to the grand total, even though it has so many pieces.

However since this post is coming onto a year old, I would say this could have changed. But it is a source of information.

However we still do not know if this applies to racial weapons. As the post was only showing pictures of the randomly generated ones.

The only modifications I want for gear are visual. So that I won't have to trade cool sword for a more powerful abomination.

Thanks, this is about everything I wanted - mods to low-end weapons that are more common, but usually leaving the more powerful monster weapons alone.

Oh and yeah, I'd love to be able to 'skin-swap' a weapon's visuals for another, basically stat-swapping an ugly but powerful weapon for a similar but weaker weapon that looks better.
I guess we will see what we have once the game is live :)
