What if there were weapon modifiers you attach to weapons to improve them? Say something like scopes, or a stone that sharpens blades. Maybe even batteries to keep the old lightsabre going strong. Why replace your weapon, when you can make it stronger?
I was gonna post a thread about this, seems like you've beaten me to it. What I don't like about Terraria is the "get best weapon/gear, pwn everything" part. I hope it isn't the same with Starbound. Weapon modifiers should do the trick. Certain modifiers may add an element and even increase the potency of it. For example: Attach a sword with a flame blade and it becomes a fire sword which deals fire damage/inflicts a burn debuff. Adding a fire crystal/whatever would increase the fire damage or the duration of the burn debuff. Modifiers may also add a chance to block status ailments, provide resistance to certain weapons, increase item/gold drop rates, and improve stats [attack, defense, speed, energy based atk/def, etc.] Special modifiers give certain effects to weapons. For example, increase a sword's length or the range of a gun. Modifiers like scopes increase the range or accuracy of a gun or even increase the damage. Special modifiers can also grant life recovery per hit or maybe give splash damage, stuff like that. Those were just some examples of what a modifier can do. It may also apply to armors, shields or even tools. Also, there is a restriction to how many modifiers you can attach to an item, let's say, 2-4 modifiers. That is all.
I really do hope they take on this idea. It would make the game a lot more interesting and fun. Lets hope it also affects the weapons apparel. (colors and such)
I think I was even going to make a post about this at some point, but I probably forgot to. This is exactly what I thought of as well. The question is that would you be able to change the modifiers once they were equipped. My thought is that most of the modifiers would be un-equipable and re-equipable through means of some sort of work bench. However, there'd be a very few, much more powerful ones that are gotten from quests that are, once equipped, cannot be changed. This adds a ton of variety, while still having to wait for that one item that is unique to your play style to increase it's effects dramatically.
We should all make a joint post, and combine all of the ideas here to make it as good as possible who knows, it may even get chosen
Hey guys! I'm working on concept sprites right now for weapon modifiers. I will upload them, followed by an upload later from my PA Shadowgenisis.
I'd love to see this ingame. All the parts used to procedurally generate weapons and items at your reach once a certain point of the game is reached! I'd specially love to see ammo mods for ranged weapons, like a certain ammo clip has HE rounds effects.
Hey guys, just bringing you a couple of sprite ideas. Note that these will suck, because I am not very good at pixel art. First off, we have the Flame Blade - It does exactly what you think it does: sets people on fire. Next up, we have the Battery - Makes lightsabre weapons do more damage and extends the energy blade. Finally(for now,) we have the Scope - Increases critical strike chance with ranged weapons, and decreases chance of a missed attack. Feel free to leave feedback and let me know what you think. Don't forget that these aren't the final copies though. I still need to run them by Shadowgenisis and see what he can do.
Hey guys, it's Shadowgenisis. I've made up a handle for the flame blade (with a fire stone inside, credit for idea to Dibidy), feedback/comments appreciated. Let me know what you guys think! Not going to make the blade until I'm sure on the design of this thing xP By the way, the thing at the bottom (the flower-type thing) - should I make that the place for the fire stone or near the top like I have it now? Let me know what you think would look better.
The only problem would be how would the modifiers be obtained. I guess that the more common ones (Such as increased melee weapon size, increased damage, and reduced energy cost) would be able to be bought, but the best and rarest ones (Such as sticky plasma bullets, or exploding bullets) would be only found in dungeons (Both in containers and dropped by NPCs), already applied to randomly-generated weapons, obtained from quests, or dropped by mini-bosses. It would be also possible to remove modifiers from weapons (Althrough they would be tiered so that you´d still have to find new modifiers) by interacting with S.A.I.L (As tech switching and printing furniture aren´t enough uses) after upgrading the ship enough.
