I like the mm as it is right now, gully upgraded and pulverising uppity meteorites.

I like them the way they are, But, I wouldn't mind being able to repair them a bit but at a higher cost than before, like a respective type bar instead of a ore. Have each bar only add 10 more swings or something.

Pickaxe so mainstream used in too many mine-based games.

Doesn't it only take 4 bars of the respective ore to make one?

I honestly don't know the requirements. I've only used the ones we pick up, and the matter manipulator. I like the manipulator, the picks are a good boost and throw away. Just saying I think being able to repair them once or twice at a high cost might be nice. Not infinitely keep it, but a one time high cost repair. Once you're at a high tier gold and silver are obsolete anyway aside from pixel conversion or making picks.

Edit: Or just have them stack in your inventory, though I can see why they don't.

I prefer the breaking version as an alternative. But as a good middle ground, they should let people repair them to prevent their breaking. If they wanna waste resources fixing it, let em.

  7. Why not, plus they're pretty dang cheap to make. I felt like I was paying an actual cost for mining early game while using the picks, which felt right!

    Forget picks, keep the MM!

When the update was still in unstable I used picks only to test them out and to use up all the free ones I found; from start to finish the MM was my tool of choice. In fact, I'd prefer dropping picks altogether and making drills the basic throwaway mining equipment instead, with the latter perhaps giving a greater speed bonus when mining hard rock or metal blocks (maybe ore-containing rocks as well) compared to the MM in order to differentiate the two.

Whether the ability to repair them returns or not doesn't make much difference to me, but I'm willing to accept it if it does.

Okay, so... The technology level here gives us space travel, FTL engines, laser/beam weaponry, and a matter replicator (with a price tag).... yet people want to dig with INFERIOR technology? I don't... why? WHY would you want a lower tech method when you have a nifty little device that has one-time costs for upgrades, and it never breaks? Sorry, but I'll stick with the Matter Manipulator. Picks? No thanks, I have better technology in my hands. I'm gonna use it.

Pickaxes are fine as temporary tools that you can use earlier in progression to bust through hard rocky areas and mine ore with. The MM is just perfectly strong now and it actually makes sense. If anything this is my favorite "new" change.. the fact that the MM is upgradable. So good.

Initially I liked the pickaxes. Making them consumable faster felt like it offered a new challenge to balance out materials cost and faster mining. But they're really not working as is. Repair should come back if they're gonna break so quickly. Then you're only really breaking them if you don't pay attention, and it won't hog resource space. I honestly think everything should mine like, 5% faster. There's so much mining in Starbound, and I have limited time, so I'd prefer not to wait for cobblestone when it's a means to an end, not a fun action in and of itself.

I'd be fine with being able to repair them, that just means I wouldn't have to keep half a million picks in my inventory for when the current one breaks. Or plop down an anvil and create a new one, if trying to save inventory space.

Really, the important part with these changes (at least as far as I'm concerned) is that the tools actually do break in the first place. That and the fact that the MM gets better and better as the player progresses, assuming it gets upgraded of course. It's a nice balance.

But yeah, sure, get repairs back in the game. That's fine, it just makes things less click intensive if anything. Just make it so that we have to use the right materials, no repairing diamond tools with copper like we could in the past.

I think it just needs a little tweaking. Repairing is one way of making the picks worthwhile, or if they just lasted ever so slightly longer...

Chiming in to say, I don't miss using pickaxes at all, I much prefer the Matter Manipulator. This is a futuristic sci-fi game, I shouldn't be using technology that's thousands and thousands of years old IRL.

That being said, they're still quite nice for early on mining sprees, mechanics wise - not until mid-game does the matter manipulator mine in a 3x3 area, and even then it's still slower.

Also - I think it'd be cool if we could repair drills. They're already more limited than the MM in terms of range, it'd be cool if they are at least close to or on-par with the MM. They still cost resources to make and would cost resources to repair, so their dig speed could be faster to compensate.

I really think that the way they have changes teh pickaxes, drills and MM have really given that scifi feel back to the progression. There is no way that a pick should be better then a matter manipulator!!

I feel the Copper Pickaxe should maybe last a LITTLE longer against common dirt, but otherwise? pfffffffff. I used them like ONCE to get some Core Fragments. Since then, it's been Matter Manipulator upgrades and I've never looked back.

I felt the same way at first, but once you level up your matter manipulator, you won't want to ever use a pickaxe again.
