We Want our Picks Back!

The Upbeat Giraffe update was very well received where I am, with one exception. The new pickaxes really aren't better than the old ones. it was fun to find the resources to make all the different levels of picks, their mining speeds were balanced, and it was hugely convenient to be able to repair them, so you could use them as much as you want. now that they are consumables they feel like a huge waste of resources (i.e. why waste diamonds when it will run out in five minutes?), and mine much too quickly. overall, they decrease the enjoyment of mining, and make it dependent on the matter manipulator, which is less enjoyable when you start the game because it mines so slowly. If you could add an option to enable old pickaxes, or encourage a mod that did the same, that would be a very nice solution. -Demonic

I actually like the matter manipulator a lot better. I don't feel like I'm flying through space on a glorified rocket abusing largely foreign technology so I can bang sharp metal against a rock anymore. They're meant to be a quick alternative; you can mine faster with them, but the cost of doing so is in materials and inventory space. It'll get better as you upgrade it; you just need to be patient.

Rome wasn't built in a day. Neither was a good matter manipulator.

I can see what you mean, it's just nostalgia really. I've had the game for a little over two years and it was just yesterday that the new update was released. you're allowed to like the matter manipulator, that's fine, I just want an option.

The game was released 13 months ago, so I really don't know how that's possible. That aside, you could always just bring an anvil down into the underground with you.

Honestly, since the update I have yet to each touch a pickaxe. MM is so much better now in every way.

Pickaxes are still quite usefull early-mid game and speeds it up aloot, pickaxes only become somewhat useless late game when you have upgraded the mm fully.

(I typically use most of the materials have have outgrown for pickaxes, like copper early game after the first mm upgrade, hoe, cooking bench and saving 10 bars for a later quest. While copper is still usefull late game for wire'ing its easy to get more at that point)

It's amazing how some people come up with an opinion as if it were the same for the whole community. :lolwut:

I probably only used pickaxes a time or two and honestly I think these were put in the game simply cuz Terraria has it too.

And pickaxes aren't the only things obsolete due to the SuUuUuPer advanced technology, only time will tell what developers will do about it.

I like the way it's set up now: Matter Manipulator as primary workhorse, pickaxes for a short digging buff.

this was the way it should have always been ^~^ excellent change

pick axes should be left to terraria and space tech to starbound ^~^

    Im just gona say:

    No, "WE" dont.

People now have a unlimited, ranged, upgradeable, pick that can see ores from afar and detect the sorunding areas by scanning them fro ores, and caves, and monsters.

If you really wanna make stuff quick, the ore is plentifull, and make yerself a gold drill or sumthin, otherwise, get used to the matter manipulator.

We have no use to dwell on "nostalgia", if the stuff we have nowadays beats it to crap.Really, you only harm yourself for disliking the matter manipulator.

The good thing is I'm pretty sure it'd be rather easy to mod a pickaxe that has high durability. I personally think they should make the matter manipulator useful in other areas besides mining. Such as for placing/building by giving the MM an ability to select various shape of it's placements/destruction. Say...instead of a big rectangle you could create a line 6 blocks long (or vertical). Think of it like choosing which Tetris shape block you want to place. That would make the MM continue to be very useful while still allowing the use of picks to mine.

The picks are good enough for me at the moment. Before I could upgrade the MM enough I was using them quite liberally, since they're very cheap to make.

Now drills on the other hand, I'm not quite sure what purpose they serve anymore. To be honest, I haven't even tried them in this patch because by the time I unlocked them there just wasn't a whole lot more mining left for me to do and the MM was soon fully upgraded.

Their purpose: Extremly fast 2x2 mining. Reasons? Who knows.

I bet they could be usefull if you think about it but they have no apparent use (especially not since they break faster then anything else).

I found drills to be really handy punching though hard materials like magmarock and meteorites in a hurry. That way I can get to the softer layers of magma planets.

I don't want the old picks back, I just want the current ones to be a bit more balanced to make them more worth the trouble of crafting them.

I think pickaxes were thrown in since that seems to be the norm for sandbox games with resource gathering. Terraria and Minecraft both made them to be quite popular. In fact, I was trying out a sci-fi sandbox game beta and guess what they had for your starting mining equipment? A wooden pickaxe.

To be honest, I think it is an overused tool. As befitting the advancement of FTL travel, teleportation, plasma weaponry, nano-suits, we have the Matter Manipulator. Pickaxes being used as a primary means of resource gathering clashes with the current tech that is being showcased.
